Craft a Fire Charge with one blaze powder, one coal or charcoal, and one gunpowder. The shapeless recipe works in either a 2×2 inventory grid or a 3×3 crafting table and returns three Fire Charges. Select one and use it on a block to place fire; unlike flint and steel, that use consumes the item. Fire Charges can also relight a completed Nether portal, ignite several special blocks, load into a dispenser as small-fireball ammunition, and serve as the large-ball ingredient for a firework star.

Fire Charge recipe: ingredients and crafting steps
A Fire Charge needs exactly three ingredients:
- One blaze powder
- One coal or one charcoal
- One gunpowder
Place one of each ingredient in any three slots of a 2×2 inventory crafting grid or a 3×3 crafting-table grid. The arrangement does not matter; there is no required shape. The output is three Fire Charges, so one complete recipe gives three separate ignition items.

- Open the inventory screen and locate the 2×2 crafting grid.
- Put blaze powder, coal or charcoal, and gunpowder into three grid slots.
- Take the stack of three Fire Charges from the result slot.
This is useful when you already have the ingredients while exploring and do not want to place a crafting table.
Crafting at a table
- Place and open a crafting table to access the 3×3 grid.
- Add one blaze powder, one coal or charcoal, and one gunpowder in any positions.
- Move the three Fire Charges from the output slot into your inventory.
Coal and charcoal are interchangeable for this recipe. You cannot replace either with other fuel items, and a blaze rod is not accepted directly: smelt or craft the rod into blaze powder first.

Where the ingredients come from
The recipe is tied to normal Nether progression. Blazes drop blaze rods, which can be crafted into blaze powder. Ghasts can provide gunpowder, while wither skeletons can provide coal. You can also obtain gunpowder from other in-game sources, but the Nether route explains why Fire Charges are often available when a portal needs emergency relighting.
Blaze powder
Find a Nether fortress and defeat blazes to obtain blaze rods. Convert the rods into blaze powder, then reserve one powder for each Fire Charge recipe. Because blaze powder is also used for other crafting and brewing tasks, count your supply before spending it.
Coal or charcoal
Mine coal ore in the Overworld or make charcoal by smelting logs. Either item satisfies the middle ingredient slot, so charcoal is a practical substitute when you have not found enough coal.
Gunpowder
Ghasts are one Nether source. Gunpowder can also come from other hostile-mob drops and loot, depending on how you play and which structures you explore. Keep the ingredient separate from the finished Fire Charge until you are ready to craft; gunpowder alone cannot ignite a block.
Other ways to obtain Fire Charges
Crafting is predictable, but current item-reference data also records Fire Charges in ruined-portal chests and in trial-chamber dispensers. The same references list piglin bartering as a source: a piglin can give one Fire Charge for a gold ingot.
Loot tables, quantities, and bartering behavior can change between releases, and Java Edition and Bedrock Edition have separate data entries. Treat any exact chance or count as version-specific. If a structure does not contain the item in your release, use the recipe rather than assuming your world generated incorrectly.
Ruined portals
Search the chest associated with a ruined portal. A Fire Charge found there can be used immediately to repair the portal or to light another target, but chest contents are generated by the world seed and the release’s loot table.

Trial chambers
Some trial-chamber dispensers can contain Fire Charges. This is a structure-specific find rather than a guaranteed reward in every chamber, so check the dispenser and record what your edition and version actually generated.
Piglin bartering
Give a piglin a gold ingot and it may return one Fire Charge. Bartering is random, and the available trade table is version-sensitive. Wear suitable Nether gear and control the area before opening an exchange, because nearby piglins can become hostile for reasons unrelated to the trade.
How to use a Fire Charge by hand
Hold the Fire Charge in your hotbar, select it, and use the item on a valid block face. On Java Edition with a mouse and keyboard, this is normally a right-click; console, touch, and other control schemes use their platform’s equivalent “use item” command. The item is consumed and fire is placed where the game allows it.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Put a Fire Charge in an accessible hotbar slot.
- Face the block or target you want to ignite.
- Press your platform’s use-item control.
- Confirm that fire appeared, then move away if the target can burn or explode.
A Fire Charge is therefore a single-use substitute for flint and steel when you only need one ignition. It is not a reusable lighter: every successful hand use spends one charge, even though the recipe produced three at once.
Why a use may fail
- The targeted face is not a block on which the game permits fire.
- A protected or adventure-mode area blocks interaction.
- The target is already occupied, out of reach, or cannot support the intended fire.
- You are using the wrong control for your platform and never issued the use-item action.
Move to a clear block face, verify that the Fire Charge is selected, and try again. If the target is flammable, check the surrounding area before igniting it; fire can spread or destroy builds.
Relighting a Nether portal
A Fire Charge can ignite a completed Nether portal frame. This is particularly useful when a ghast’s fireball has extinguished the purple portal interior but the obsidian frame is still intact. Stand outside the frame, select the Fire Charge, and use it on the inside of the portal opening or another suitable block in the frame’s opening. A valid portal lights and begins transporting entities as usual.
Portal-recovery checklist
- Inspect the frame and replace any missing or incorrect blocks; a Fire Charge cannot fix an incomplete frame.
- Clear the portal opening of blocks, water, lava, or entities that prevent ignition.
- Hold the Fire Charge and use it on the frame’s interior area.
- Wait for the purple portal field. If nothing appears, recheck the frame geometry and your target face.
Flint and steel can perform the same portal-relighting job. Keep at least one ignition method in a Nether emergency kit, especially if your return portal is exposed to ghast fireballs.

What else can a Fire Charge ignite?
Beyond ordinary block fire, item-reference data lists several specific targets:
- TNT: use a Fire Charge to prime it from a safe distance relative to the blast.
- Nether portals: ignite a valid, completed frame.
- Campfires: light an unlit campfire.
- Candles: light candles and candle arrangements that accept ignition.
- Cakes with candles: light the candle topping rather than treating the cake as a general flammable block.
- Creepers: ignite a creeper, creating the charged-creeper setup associated with direct ignition.
These are target interactions, not a guarantee that every nearby block will burn. Fire spread, explosion damage, and mob behavior still follow the rules of your edition, difficulty, game mode, and world settings. Test dangerous arrangements away from valuable builds.
Using Fire Charges in a dispenser
A dispenser loaded with a Fire Charge launches a small fireball when powered. This is the main reason to choose Fire Charges over a hand-held lighter for a redstone build: the ignition can be triggered remotely and repeatedly as long as the dispenser contains more charges.
Basic dispenser setup
- Craft or obtain a dispenser and place it facing the intended target.
- Open the dispenser and put Fire Charges in its inventory.
- Connect a button, lever, pressure plate, redstone torch, or another redstone signal to the dispenser.
- Activate the signal and observe the fireball’s path.
- Adjust the dispenser’s position, line of sight, and redstone timing before adding more ammunition.
The dispenser consumes one Fire Charge per firing. This behavior supports remote ignition, defensive firing lines, traps, and controlled test ranges. Build a backstop and test with a small number of charges: fireballs can ignite flammable blocks and may damage entities or structures depending on where they land.
Hand use versus dispenser use
| Question | Hand use | Dispenser use |
|---|---|---|
| What happens? | Places fire at the targeted block and consumes one charge. | Fires a small fireball and consumes one charge. |
| Control | Direct player interaction. | Redstone signal, allowing remote activation. |
| Typical role | One-off ignition or portal recovery. | Traps, defenses, automated or repeatable ignition. |
| Main caution | Accidental fire near flammable construction. | Unintended firing, fire spread, and blast or mob damage. |
Do not describe a dispenser Fire Charge as a hand-thrown weapon. It is ammunition whose firing behavior comes from the dispenser block.
Fire Charges in firework stars
In current Java Edition recipe data, Fire Charge is the ingredient that gives a firework star the large-ball shape. Add a Fire Charge while crafting the star along with the usual gunpowder and dye components for the desired color and effect. The Fire Charge is consumed as a crafting ingredient; it is not the projectile itself.
Because firework recipes and effect details can vary by edition, check the recipe book in your release if the large-ball option does not appear. The important distinction is that this use changes a firework star’s explosion shape, while direct use of a Fire Charge places fire and dispenser use launches a small fireball.

Fire Charge versus flint and steel
Both items can light ordinary targets and relight a valid Nether portal, but they suit different inventories and builds.
| Comparison | Fire Charge | Flint and steel |
|---|---|---|
| Ingredients | Blaze powder, coal or charcoal, and gunpowder; one recipe returns three. | Iron and flint. |
| Consumption | One item is spent for each successful hand ignition; dispenser shots also consume charges. | Reusable until its durability runs out. |
| Portal recovery | Can relight a completed Nether portal. | Can relight a completed Nether portal. |
| Remote operation | Can be loaded into a dispenser as ammunition. | Not used as dispenser ammunition in this way. |
| Best fit | Emergency portal lighting, disposable ignition, redstone launchers, and large-ball firework stars. | Routine exploration and repeated manual lighting. |
Choose flint and steel when you expect many manual ignitions and have access to iron and flint. Choose Fire Charges when Nether materials are already on hand, when a one-use item is acceptable, or when a dispenser must fire remotely.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Planning a practical Fire Charge supply
For a single portal repair, one Fire Charge is enough if the frame is complete and the first use succeeds. Carrying a few extras is sensible for a dangerous Nether route, because ghasts, fire, and missed interactions can force another attempt. A crafting batch always returns three, so gather ingredients in multiples of one recipe rather than assuming each ingredient produces one charge.
- Keep blaze powder or spare blaze rods available for additional batches.
- Use charcoal if coal is scarce.
- Reserve gunpowder for the number of charges you actually expect to use.
- Store finished charges separately from TNT and other hazardous supplies so a misclick does not ignite a valuable area.
- For dispensers, calculate ammunition from the number of planned activations and test the circuit before filling the entire inventory.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The recipe does not appear
Confirm that you have all three ingredients, not a blaze rod instead of blaze powder, and that the coal substitute is coal or charcoal. Open either the 2×2 inventory grid or a 3×3 crafting table and place the items in any three slots. If the recipe book is filtered, clear the filter or craft manually.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe Fire Charge will not light a portal
Check that the frame is a valid completed Nether portal and that its interior is clear. A charge ignites a portal; it does not repair missing obsidian or correct an incorrectly shaped frame.
The hand-use action does nothing
Verify the charge is selected, use the platform’s actual use-item control, and target a reachable block face. Protected areas, adventure restrictions, and invalid target blocks can all prevent ignition.
The dispenser does not fire
Make sure the block is a dispenser rather than a dropper, place at least one Fire Charge in its inventory, and send a redstone pulse to the dispenser. Check that the dispenser faces the intended direction and that surrounding blocks are not hiding the result.

A structure generated different loot
Ruined-portal and trial-chamber contents, as well as piglin bartering tables, are release-sensitive and differ between Java and Bedrock data. Use the recipe when a generated chest or dispenser does not contain a charge; do not rely on an exact probability unless it is documented for your specific edition and version.

Can you make a Fire Charge without a crafting table?
Yes. The 2×2 inventory grid is sufficient because the recipe uses only three ingredients and returns three charges.
Does a Fire Charge last forever like a lighter?
No. A hand use consumes the Fire Charge. Flint and steel is the reusable option until its durability is exhausted.
Can a Fire Charge relight any portal?
It can ignite a valid, completed Nether portal frame. It cannot build or repair the frame itself.
Is a dispenser Fire Charge a fireball weapon?
A dispenser fires the charge as a small fireball, making it suitable for redstone devices and defenses. It is not thrown directly by the player in that form.
