Choose the approach that matches your goal: use Adventure Mode to restrict players’ building and mining, use Deny Blocks to protect an area in Minecraft Education, or use blocks such as barriers or bedrock that are listed as unbreakable in Survival and Adventure. These options protect different things, so they are not interchangeable.
Choose the kind of protection you need
| Goal | Best-fit option | Edition and scope |
|---|---|---|
| Stop players from mining or placing blocks across a map | Adventure Mode | General player interaction restriction; Bedrock command documented by Microsoft |
| Protect a particular area from building and mining | Deny Blocks | Minecraft Education only |
| Use a block ordinary players cannot mine | Barrier or bedrock | Listed as unbreakable in Survival and Adventure by the Minecraft Wiki; check edition and version |
| Keep a tool from losing durability | Java item component minecraft:unbreakable |
Changes the item, not a placed block |
| Create a custom block that cannot be mined | Bedrock custom-block component minecraft:destructible_by_mining: false |
Add-on/custom-block feature, not a change to an ordinary placed block |
Stop players from changing the map with Adventure Mode
Adventure Mode is the clearest built-in choice when the goal is to prevent players from breaking or placing blocks generally. Minecraft’s help page explains that Adventure players cannot break or place blocks unless they hold special items that allow it: Minecraft Game Mode Descriptions. This restricts what players can do; it does not change the hardness of every block in the world.

Set players to Adventure Mode in Bedrock
Microsoft Learn documents the Bedrock command as /gamemode <gameMode> [player]. It accepts adventure, a, or 2, and requires commands to be available in the world. For example, to target all players with a tag, the documented form is:
/gamemode adventure @a[tag=sometag]
See Microsoft’s Bedrock /gamemode command reference for syntax and target selectors. Use a player selector appropriate to your world if you do not want to affect everyone.

Protect a specific area in Minecraft Education
Minecraft Education has Deny Blocks, which prevent players from placing or destroying blocks above them. The feature is specific to Education; it should not be treated as a standard Java Edition or regular Bedrock region-protection feature. You need World Builder permission to place and edit Deny Blocks. Details are in the Minecraft Education specialty-block guide.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use a block that ordinary players cannot mine
The Minecraft Wiki’s block-hardness table lists barrier and bedrock as unbreakable in Survival and Adventure. That is useful guidance for ordinary mining, but it does not establish immunity to Creative players, operator commands, explosions, or every other damage mechanism. Treat it as edition- and version-sensitive secondary-source information, rather than a guarantee of absolute protection. See the Minecraft Wiki block-hardness table.
Bedrock’s /setblock command reference explains how to replace a block at coordinates and notes that cheats are required. It does not verify a barrier identifier or provide a universally valid barrier command, so do not assume a command copied from another edition or version will work in your world.
What “unbreakable” means for items and custom blocks
Java’s minecraft:unbreakable protects item durability
In the Java Edition 1.20.5 release notes, Mojang defines minecraft:unbreakable as an item component: an item with it does not lose durability when used. It does not make a block indestructible after placement. The separate minecraft:can_break component controls which blocks an Adventure Mode player can break with that item. Read the Java Edition 1.20.5 release notes.
Bedrock’s mining component is for custom blocks
Bedrock 1.19.20 release notes describe minecraft:destructible_by_mining: false for custom block components. This makes the custom block indestructible by mining; it is not a command for making any ordinary vanilla block already placed in a world unbreakable. See the Bedrock 1.19.20 release notes.
Quick Recap
Pick based on who needs to be stopped
- For players who should not build or mine anywhere: use Adventure Mode, with special items only if you intend to grant exceptions.
- For one protected area in Education: use Deny Blocks and ensure the person placing or editing them has World Builder permission.
- For a block that resists ordinary Survival or Adventure mining: barrier or bedrock may fit, but verify behavior in the specific edition and version.
- For a tool that should not wear out: use the Java item component; it affects tool durability, not the world block.
- For a custom Bedrock block: the mining component applies to that add-on-defined block, not arbitrary vanilla blocks.
