To improve Borderlands 4 on PC, first match your settings to your hardware, update your graphics driver, and test a supported upscaler. Then change graphics options gradually and give shaders time to recompile before judging performance. Gearbox’s published targets are 1080p at 30 FPS on Low for minimum-spec PCs and 1440p at 60 FPS on Medium for recommended-spec PCs; they are expectations, not guarantees for every system.
Start with the target your PC can realistically meet
Gearbox’s PC system requirements, updated May 29, 2026, provide a useful baseline rather than a promise of identical results on every computer.

If your PC is below a tier, that does not mean the game cannot run; it means the published target may be unrealistic without reducing resolution or settings. If you meet recommended specifications but still see stutter, investigate software and frame-time consistency before assuming a component needs replacing.
Update the graphics driver before tuning
Install the current driver for your GPU from its manufacturer. Borderlands Support’s PC troubleshooting and optimization guide, updated October 6, 2026, links to NVIDIA, AMD, and Intel driver resources. Use the vendor’s latest applicable release rather than relying on an older driver number quoted in historical guidance.

Try upscaling and Frame Generation carefully
In the game, open Options → Visuals → Advanced → Resolution Scaling. Gearbox lists DLSS, FSR, TSR, and XeSS, with availability depending on hardware. Compare the options your PC supports rather than assuming one is universally best. A Performance-oriented upscaling mode can increase frame rate by rendering at a lower resolution, but may make the image less sharp. Frame Generation may raise displayed FPS on supported hardware, but compare how responsive play feels as well as the number on screen.
On Windows 10, the support guide says Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling must be enabled to use upscaling as instructed; restart the PC after changing it. The guide says this setting is enabled by default on Windows 11.

Tune settings in small batches and wait for shader compilation
Change one or a few graphics options at a time so you can tell which adjustment matters. After a change, play for at least 15 minutes before comparing results: shader compilation can temporarily affect performance. Gearbox estimates compilation takes about 10 minutes on most PCs, and advises allowing time for it to settle.
Judge smoothness as well as average FPS. Gearbox’s performance update explains that 1% and 0.1% lows help show frame stability; values closer to the average generally indicate smoother play. If the average looks adequate but movement still hitches, investigate frame-time dips rather than treating the average alone as a verdict.

Clear persistent stutter, crashes, or launch problems
- Restart the game and PC. If shader compilation appears stuck or stutter persists after settings changes, a restart can help establish whether the issue clears.
- Consider resetting the shader cache. Follow the vendor-specific instructions in the official troubleshooting guide. Clearing a shader cache can also remove cached shaders used by other programs.
- Verify the game files. Use the file-verification option in Steam or Epic Games Store if the game crashes, fails to launch, or behaves unexpectedly.
- Test without overlays. Disable overlays that may be interfering, then see whether the problem recurs.
- Escalate unresolved problems. Use the support ticket and issue-tracker links in Gearbox’s guide if these checks do not resolve the issue.
What Gearbox says has improved—and what that does not prove
In its March 2026 PC Performance Status Update, Gearbox reported approximately 20% average FPS improvement across minimum and recommended specifications, alongside work on hitching, frame-time lows, and stability. It also reported that, since December, crashes fell from 0.63% to 0.38% of sessions and the share of players experiencing a crash declined from 17% to 9.35%. These are developer-reported aggregate figures, not independent benchmarks or predictions for an individual PC. Gearbox said more optimization work remained.

Use the requirements as a diagnostic reference, not a shopping list. Consider an upgrade only if your current system falls short of the resolution and frame-rate target you want and driver updates, upscaling, and lower settings are not enough. A GPU purchase alone cannot guarantee smoother play: memory, the processor, storage, frame-time behavior, and the game’s remaining performance issues can also matter. The RTX 3080 is one of Gearbox’s recommended examples, alongside AMD and Intel alternatives—not a universal requirement.
