You need the base game to access it, and online multiplayer requires an internet connection, a PlayStation account, and PlayStation Plus, which is sold separately.
What you need to play Ghost of Yōtei Legends
- Ghost of Yōtei for PS5: Legends is provided as a free update to owners of the base game through patch 1.5.
- An internet connection and a PlayStation account: PlayStation lists both as requirements.
- PlayStation Plus: Required for online play or multiplayer. The subscription is sold separately and has recurring fees until cancelled.
PlayStation does not describe Legends as a separately purchasable game or identify a standalone free-to-play version. The free part is the update for people who already own Ghost of Yōtei. If you do not own it, you need to acquire the base game first. PlayStation’s game page and its March 9, 2026 launch explainer set out these access requirements.

How to access and play the mode
Install the Ghost of Yōtei update that includes patch 1.5, then play Legends as an online co-op mode. Its three activities support different group sizes and objectives:

| Survival | Up to four | Defend territory against waves of enemies on one of four maps. Holding locations can activate Blessings; losing control can trigger Curses. |
| Story | Two | Play a sequence of 12 missions. Completing each set of three unlocks an Incursion. |
| Incursion | Four | Assault a stronghold and finish with a boss fight against a supernatural version of the Spider, Oni, Kitsune, or Snake. |
Which Legends class should you choose?
Legends has four classes with different weapon and combat specialities. PlayStation’s launch explainer describes them as follows:

- Discover renegade combat, engage in lawless katana combat and battles with adversaires. Train with various sensei as you find and learn to use each new weapon.
- An unconventional story and journey, take in the cultural beauty of Japan, bathe in an onsen, visit shrines to pray, try Sumi-e painting, and so much more.
- Choose your weapon, battle Atsu's opponents as you see fit, with levelled-up dual katanas, odachi, kusarigama and other new weapons.
- Samurai: Can wield the ōdachi and has access to the widest range of weapon types.
- Archer: Can use the yari and carry an additional ranged weapon.
- Mercenary: Uses dual katana and utility abilities.
- Shinobi: Uses the kusarigama and stealth skills.
When did Legends launch?
The mode launched on March 10, 2026, with a March 11 launch in some territories, including Asia, Australia, and New Zealand, according to PlayStation’s March 9, 2026 announcement. Those are launch dates; they do not indicate that the mode is still unavailable elsewhere.
