Raise the game’s brightness to see dark areas more clearly on screen; place torches or other light-emitting blocks to add actual light to a cave. These are different fixes: a brighter display does not illuminate the world or make an unlit cave safe.
Choose the kind of brightness you need

Raise the brightness setting
Open the game’s settings and increase the brightness or visual brightness option. Menu names and available controls can differ by edition and platform, so there is no single current menu path that applies to every Minecraft version and device. Bedrock’s official accessibility overview lists visual settings.
This changes what you see on the display; it does not add block light to the cave. If you want in-world light, place a light-emitting block.
Light the cave with blocks
For exploration or Survival building, carry torches and place them along the route, near branches you have explored, and around areas where you need dependable visibility. Lanterns and other light-emitting blocks can also provide local light. Microsoft’s Bedrock documentation describes torches and lanterns as local light sources; its lighting customization details relate to Vibrant Visuals and are version- and rendering-mode-dependent, so they should not be taken as universal customization options for every device.

Java’s 1.18 release notes also identify Glow Berry-bearing Cave Vines as a source of cave lighting. This is a world feature rather than a screen brightness setting.
Use Night Vision if you want to see without placing lights
Night Vision is an in-game effect that can make dark areas easier to see. It changes visibility rather than placing torches or other light sources in the cave. Its precise rendering behavior can vary: Java 26.1 Snapshot 1 notes describe Night Vision as adding ambient light under that snapshot’s updated lightmap algorithm. That snapshot detail should not be assumed to describe every Minecraft edition or release.

Java full-bright resource packs are optional and version-specific
Some Java players use third-party resource packs to make dark areas render brighter. Check the individual pack listing for support for your exact Minecraft version, required mods, and known issues, and check server rules before using altered rendering in multiplayer.
- FullBrightness lists OptiFine as a requirement.
- Boosted Brightness says it uses the newer lightmap shader and supports Vanilla and Sodium; its listing also warns of possible shader issues.
These are statements from third-party pack listings, not official compatibility guarantees or universal server policies.

Brighter caves are not automatically safer
Java 1.18 release notes state that monsters spawn only where block light is 0, while sky light continues to prevent spawning as before. Raising screen brightness does not change block light, so it should not be treated as a way to prevent spawns. For the version-specific rule, see the official Java 1.18 release notes.
