The easiest way to make a recognizable Pokémon Christmas ornament is to choose the format that fits your group: bake a polymer-clay Poké Ball or Pikachu for a durable keepsake, decorate a clear fillable ball for a quick three-dimensional project, fold the official Glaceon snowflake for the lowest-cost option, or assemble printable Pokémon cones when you need many ornaments for a classroom or party.
All four methods use ordinary craft supplies. The instructions below explain exactly what to prepare, how to build each design, how to attach a hanger, and how to avoid the failures that make small ornaments crack, smear or fall from the tree.

Choose the right Pokémon ornament method
Decide first whether you want a keepsake, a fast activity or a batch project. Polymer clay gives the greatest durability and detail but requires an oven and careful curing. A fillable plastic ball produces a three-dimensional Poké Ball quickly. Paper designs cost the least and are easiest for young children, while cones are efficient when every participant needs a different Pokémon.

For a single ornament that should return to the tree every year, use clay. For a same-day family activity, use a fillable ball. For a school table with limited supplies, use Glaceon snowflakes or cones.

Method 1: Make a polymer-clay Poké Ball
A Poké Ball is the most forgiving clay design because its red-and-white split and black center band remain recognizable even when the ornament is small. Use oven-bake polymer clay in red, white and black, plus a little gray or white for the center button.
Materials
- Red, white and black oven-bake polymer clay
- A protected work surface and an oven-safe baking sheet or mat
- A toothpick or sculpting tool for the band and button
- Ribbon or string for hanging
- Optional: a small eye screw designed for craft projects
Shape the ball
- Condition the red and white clay by kneading each color until it is smooth and pliable. Keep colors separate so the white does not become pink or gray.
- Form a smooth sphere from the white clay. Make it slightly smaller than the finished ornament because the red clay and center details add thickness.
- Flatten a piece of red clay into a thin sheet and press it over the upper half of the sphere. Trim the edge around the equator with a sculpting tool. Smooth the seam without squeezing the sphere out of shape.
- Roll black clay into a narrow rope and place it around the equator. Press it gently into the red-and-white seam. A consistent band is easier to read than a thick, uneven strip.
- Make the center button from a small white or gray disk with a black outline, then press it onto the band. A toothpick can score a neat circular edge.
Add the hanger before curing
Make a small hole near the top with a toothpick if you want to thread ribbon after baking. For a more secure hanger, insert a small eye screw while the clay is still soft, keeping the hole centered and avoiding a very thin area of clay. Do not force hardware into a crack; reshape that section first.
Cure the ornament
Place the ornament on a protected, oven-safe surface and follow the package instructions for the specific clay. Sculpey’s published guidance gives a reference of 275°F (130°C) for 30 minutes per ¼ inch (6 mm) of thickness. Measure the thickest part, not just the visible surface, and use the manufacturer’s schedule for your product if it differs. Ventilate as directed on the label, keep furniture protected from uncured clay, and let the piece cool completely before handling the hanger.
Finish and hang
- Check that the clay is fully cool and firm.
- Thread ribbon or string through the baked hole, or tie it to the eye screw.
- Trim loose threads and leave enough loop length for a tree branch.
- Store the ornament in tissue or a small box so the button and band are not scraped by other decorations.
Method 2: Sculpt a DIY Pikachu ornament
Pikachu reads clearly as a flat face, so you do not need to sculpt a full body. A yellow face with long ears, red cheeks and black-tipped ears remains recognizable at small scale.

Build the face
- Condition yellow polymer clay and roll it into a flat oval. Keep the thickness even so curing is predictable.
- Shape two long yellow ears and attach them to the top edge. Add black clay to the tips, blending the join without covering the yellow base.
- Press two small black eyes into the face. Add a tiny nose and a curved mouth with a toothpick or thin clay rope.
- Make two red cheeks as matching disks. Place them symmetrically below the eyes and press their edges down so they do not lift during baking.
- Turn the face over and smooth any fingerprints or loose seams. Avoid making the ears paper-thin; they are the parts most likely to bend.
Prepare the hanging point and bake
Create a hole near the top center, between the ears, or add an eye screw in a thicker area. Bake on an oven-safe sheet according to the clay package; the Sculpey reference is 275°F (130°C) for 30 minutes per ¼ inch (6 mm). Let the ornament cool before adding ribbon.
For a holiday variation, add a small red or green Santa hat as a separate clay piece. A 2018 Mega Construx Holiday Pikachu release used the same Santa-hat idea with a Poké Ball ornament attachment, so the silhouette is easy for guests to understand even without extra lettering.
Method 3: Make a clear fillable Poké Ball ornament
This is the fastest route to a three-dimensional Poké Ball. Start with a clear plastic fillable Christmas ornament that opens into two halves, rather than a sealed glass bauble.

Prepare and paint
- Separate the two halves and wash or wipe them as directed by the blank’s packaging. Let them dry completely so paint adheres.
- Paint one half red and the other half white, or mask a clean equator and paint the colors on the same sphere. Thin coats reduce drips and preserve the clear seam.
- Paint the black center band around the join. If the ornament opens along a different seam, position the band where the halves meet so the construction line becomes part of the design.
- Add the center button with a white or gray circle and a black outline. Paint pens help with a small, even circle.
- Let every painted surface dry fully before closing the ornament. Wet paint can stick to the opposite half and tear away.
Close and hang
Put the halves together without forcing them. Add ribbon or string to the molded loop. If the blank has no loop, tie the hanger around the neck or use a separate ornament cap designed for that shape. A clear ball can also hold a handwritten message, small paper stars or lightweight confetti, but keep the contents loose enough that the halves close completely.

Method 4: Fold the official Glaceon paper snowflake
The Glaceon snowflake is the lowest-cost Pokémon ornament: paper, scissors and tape or string are the listed materials. Print the Pokémon template, then color it before cutting if you use a black-and-white version.
- Print the Glaceon design on ordinary paper.
- Color the template, keeping details bold enough to see from a tree branch.
- Cut around the square and remove the marked gray areas. Use child-safe scissors and supervise young children.
- Fold on the solid lines, pressing each crease flat.
- Unfold the finished snowflake carefully so the cut edges do not tear.
- Attach tape or string and hang it from a branch. The official instruction is: “Use tape or string to hang up your beautiful decoration.”
Keep paper ornaments away from candles, lights that become hot and open flames. Store them flat between sheets of paper after the holidays.
Method 5: Assemble printable Pokémon cones
Cones work well when a class, club or family needs many decorations at once. Printable templates are available in color or black and white, and examples include Pikachu, Ash, Blastoise, Dragonair, Lugia, Mew, Mewtwo and Scyther.

- Color the black-and-white version, or print the color version and add details.
- Cut around the outside edge and cut any marked openings.
- Curve the sheet into a cone and glue the tab to the opposite edge. Hold the join until it sets.
- Add pipe cleaners, sparkle glue or a paper hanger after the cone is stable. Keep decorations light so the cone does not collapse.
- Use tape or string to hang the cone, or place it on a table as a freestanding character decoration.
Make a test cone before a group session. It shows children where the tab goes and prevents a batch of cones from being glued inside out.

Design ideas beyond a basic Poké Ball
Use a simple silhouette
At tree distance, large color blocks matter more than tiny texture. A Pikachu needs yellow, red cheeks and black ear tips. A Poké Ball needs the red-and-white split, black band and central button. Make those elements first, then add names, snow dots or a year.
Choose seasonal Pokémon references
Pokémon Center’s 2023 holiday displays included Munchlax, Stantler, Spheal, Slurpuff, Mime Jr. and Pikachu ornaments. A 2025 holiday release dated 13 October 2025 listed Alolan Exeggutor and Pikachu resin-cast ornaments. These examples are useful for color and pose inspiration; seasonal product availability can change.
Personalize without losing the character
- Add the recipient’s name to the back of a clay or plastic ornament.
- Use a contrasting ribbon that matches the character’s main color.
- Make a set of Poké Balls in different sizes for a simple tree theme.
- Give each child one cone or paper snowflake and write the year on the reverse.
- For a family craft, let each person choose one Pokémon while keeping the hanger style consistent.
Safety, drying and storage
- Follow the clay manufacturer’s temperature and time instructions exactly; do not substitute a microwave or an unverified baking schedule.
- Use ventilation appropriate to the product label and keep uncured clay off furniture and porous surfaces.
- Adults should handle the oven, hot baking sheet and any small eye screws.
- Let paint dry fully before closing a fillable ornament or tying ribbon.
- Supervise children using scissors, toothpicks and sculpting tools.
- Keep paper ornaments away from heat and open flame.
- Inspect the hanger before putting an ornament on a high branch. Re-tie loose string instead of relying on a knot that is slipping.
Troubleshooting common failures
The clay ornament cracks during baking
The usual causes are uneven thickness, an overly thin ear or a seam that was not blended. Condition the clay thoroughly, keep the body consistent in thickness and support projecting parts. Use the package schedule rather than shortening the bake to prevent discoloration or incomplete curing.

The black band looks wavy
Roll the black clay into an even rope and place the ornament on a level surface while pressing it into the equator. Rotate the ball instead of dragging the rope around it in one motion.

Paint pulls off the plastic
Allow the blank to dry after cleaning, apply thin coats and let each coat cure before handling. Do not close the halves until the paint is fully dry; friction at the seam is the most likely place for wet paint to transfer.
The paper snowflake tears
Cut slowly around tight corners and unfold only after every crease is open. If the paper is too flimsy, print on slightly heavier paper while keeping the folds sharp.
The cone will not stay closed
Check that the tab is glued to the opposite edge, not to the printed face beside it. Use a small amount of glue, align the edges and hold the join until it sets before adding pipe cleaners or sparkle glue.
