Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsElden Ring has no conventional easy-mode switch. You make it more manageable by using the systems built into its world: leave unwinnable fights, improve your flasks and equipment, invest in survivability, keep a usable roll, and bring Spirit Ashes when you want direct help. These choices lower combat pressure without asking you to skip exploration, optional dungeons, or the main story.
The safest approach is to treat difficulty as a route-planning problem rather than a test of endurance. When a boss stops your progress, explore another path, collect upgrade materials, strengthen your character, and return when the fight is no longer consuming every attempt.

What “make Elden Ring easier” really means
Elden Ring does not present a normal difficulty menu with Easy, Normal, and Hard settings in the official materials. Instead, the game gives you several ways to change the conditions of a fight. You can increase your health, improve healing, upgrade weapons, call in a Spirit Ash, or simply choose a different area while you build strength.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Those tools do different jobs. A summon helps during one encounter; Vigor makes mistakes less punishing across the whole game; exploration can provide both flask improvements and upgrade materials; and Guidance of Grace helps you identify a main direction without marking every worthwhile detour. No official source ranks these options from best to worst, so use the combination that fits the obstacle in front of you.

| Tool | How directly it reduces combat pressure | Time or exploration required | Primary benefit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spirit Ash summon | High during encounters where summoning is available | Low once you have a suitable spirit | Combat support against tougher foes |
| Vigor investment | High for surviving mistakes | Requires runes and level investment | More health |
| Endurance and equipment management | Medium to high if your current roll is too slow | Requires stat points or lighter gear | Stamina, equipment load, and a usable dodge |
| Flask upgrades | Medium to high over a whole journey | Requires finding upgrade items | More uses and stronger healing |
| Weapon upgrades | High when damage is lagging behind an area | Requires smithing stones and exploration | Shorter fights |
| Exploration and route changes | Indirect but often substantial | Highest time investment | Levels, equipment, flasks, crafting materials, and alternate routes |
| Guidance of Grace | Low in the fight itself | Very low | Navigation toward major locations |
Use exploration as your first difficulty setting
If a boss feels impossible, the most useful response is often to stop fighting it for now. Elden Ring’s open structure lets you travel elsewhere, find resources, and come back with a stronger character and better knowledge of your equipment.
Improve your flasks
Bandai Namco’s beginner gameplay overview identifies Golden Seeds and Sacred Tears as exploration rewards. Golden Seeds increase the number of flask uses you can carry, while Sacred Tears improve flask effectiveness. Together, they give you more opportunities to recover from damage and make each healing use more valuable. The overview is available from the official Elden Ring site.
Search tunnels for smithing stones
Tunnels are valuable when your weapon damage has stopped keeping pace with enemies. The official gameplay overview points to tunnels as places to find smithing stones. If a boss is surviving long enough to exhaust your healing, improving the weapon you already understand can be more useful than immediately changing your build.
Visit catacombs for Spirit Ash upgrade materials
Catacombs can contain materials used to upgrade Spirit Ashes. This gives exploration a direct connection to the summon option: a detour can make the support you already use more effective instead of merely adding another item to your inventory.
Check caves and Evergaols for different rewards
Caves can provide crafting materials. Evergaols are standalone boss encounters with rewards. They are optional activities, so you do not need to clear every one before continuing the story. Use them when you want a contained challenge, a reward, or practice in a different style of fight.
Return to the boss after a deliberate detour
A productive detour has a purpose. Choose one or more targets—flask capacity, flask strength, smithing stones, Spirit Ash materials, levels, or equipment—and return when you have addressed the problem you were experiencing. Do not assume every side activity is mandatory; the point is to turn exploration into useful preparation rather than wandering without a goal.
Build for survival before chasing complicated damage setups
The official beginner stats guide lists eight attributes: Vigor, Mind, Endurance, Strength, Dexterity, Intelligence, Faith, and Arcane. You do not need to understand every scaling interaction before making the early game less stressful. Start by asking whether your character can survive a mistake and whether your equipment allows a reliable dodge.

- Collaborating with George R.R. Martin to create the ELDEN RING mythos has been a genuinely delightful experience and a source of wonderful inspiration. The team is working hard to ensure that the world of ELDEN RING will be a fascinating place for players to explore, filled with peril and wonder from its furthest reaches to its lowest depths. This is a FromSoftware title through and through, rich in fantasy and RPG action. We sincerely hope you look forward to it.
- Building the world of ELDEN RING with Miyazaki-san and his team was a treat! The graphics, mythos, and action-RPG gameplay will deliver an unforgettable experience. I can’t wait for people to see what ELDEN RING has in store for them.” Said George R.R. Martin.
Put early levels into Vigor when survival is the problem
Vigor is the health attribute. If ordinary attacks are killing you in one or two hits, additional damage will not solve the immediate issue; more health gives you room to learn attack timings, heal, and recover from an imperfect exchange. Treat Vigor as a straightforward survivability option, not as a mandatory level target or a universal best build.
Use Endurance to support stamina and equipment load
Endurance affects stamina and equipment load. Stamina determines how long you can attack, block, sprint, and dodge before needing a pause. Equipment load determines how your character rolls, so Endurance can improve both your action economy and your ability to wear useful protection.
Keep your roll out of the heavy range
The official advanced stats guide defines a normal roll as an equipment-load ratio of 30%–69.9% and a heavy roll as 70%–99.9%. The ratio compares the weight you are carrying with your maximum equipment load. If changing armor or adding a weapon pushes you into the heavy range, remove weight or increase your maximum load before treating the slower dodge as a skill problem.
These thresholds come from Bandai Namco’s advanced guide. The game’s balance can change with updates, so check the current version notes for your platform before relying on a balance-specific detail. The practical rule remains simple: make sure your character can roll in a way you can control, and verify the displayed load ratio after every equipment change.
Do not rebuild your character just because one fight is difficult
Early frustration often comes from an equipment mismatch rather than a permanently bad character. Try lighter gear, a weapon you can upgrade, or a different shield-and-dodge rhythm before abandoning your entire build. The official materials describe multiple attributes and play styles, but they do not identify one build that makes every encounter easiest.
Use Spirit Ashes as intended support
Bandai Namco’s release announcement says: “Players can also summon spirits they find on their journey to fight alongside them to help even the odds against tougher foes.” That is an intended system, not a shortcut that invalidates your playthrough.
When to try a summon
Use a Spirit Ash when you want an enemy’s attention divided, a moment to heal, or an opening to attack from another angle. Try it when a boss is overwhelming you despite reasonable equipment and upgrades, or when you want to learn the encounter without having every attack aimed at you.

How to improve the summon option
Explore catacombs for materials used to upgrade Spirit Ashes. This lets you invest in the support tool instead of treating the first summon you find as disposable. Exact summon restrictions, encounter-by-encounter availability, and a ranking of spirits are not established by the official material used here, so check the summoning prompt in the specific encounter rather than assuming every spirit works everywhere.
Keep ownership of the fight
A summon can create breathing room, but you still need to watch patterns, manage stamina, and decide when to heal. Use the assistance to reduce pressure while learning, not as a reason to ignore your weapon, load, or flask setup.
Follow Guidance of Grace without letting it erase the map
Guidance of Grace points toward key locations, including legacy dungeons, main bosses, and important areas. It is useful when you are unsure where the central story route lies, especially after arriving in a large new region.
It is not a complete checklist of valuable content. The same official gameplay overview describes side dungeons and their rewards, so a sensible route combines the direction shown by Grace with purposeful detours. If you only follow the trail, you may miss opportunities to find flask upgrades, smithing stones, Spirit Ash materials, and other rewards placed away from the main path.
A practical navigation loop
- Use the nearest Grace trail to identify a main objective. This gives you a story direction without requiring you to enter the area immediately.
- Survey nearby caves, tunnels, and catacombs. Choose the type of reward that matches your current problem: crafting materials, smithing stones, or Spirit Ash upgrade materials.
- Look for flask improvements while traveling. Golden Seeds and Sacred Tears have a direct effect on how long you can remain in the field.
- Return to the main route when your preparation has a clear result. You do not need to finish every optional location before advancing.

- Identify the failure. Are you dying before you can heal, running out of stamina, dealing too little damage, or struggling to read the boss because every attack is aimed at you?
- Check your equipment-load ratio. If it is in the heavy-roll range of 70%–99.9%, lighten your equipment or raise maximum load so your dodge is more responsive.
- Spend your next levels on the immediate weakness. Vigor is the direct choice when health is the issue; Endurance helps when stamina or load is the bottleneck.
- Upgrade your main weapon. Visit tunnels and collect smithing stones rather than replacing a familiar weapon without improving it.
- Improve your healing supply. Explore for Golden Seeds and Sacred Tears to increase uses and effectiveness.
- Try a Spirit Ash. If the encounter allows summoning and you want help, use a spirit found during your journey. Upgrade it with materials from catacombs when possible.
- Make one controlled return attempt. Go back with a specific change and observe whether that change addresses the failure you identified.
- Leave again if the fight is still a wall. Elden Ring’s structure supports postponing a boss. A different region, dungeon, or upgrade route may provide the missing advantage.
How to keep the main story and rewarding content together
Making the game easier does not require choosing between progress and exploration. Use the main route as an anchor, then branch out when the next encounter exposes a weakness.
Use a “main objective plus one detour” rhythm
After identifying the next major location through Guidance of Grace, clear one nearby activity that serves your current needs. For example, visit a tunnel when damage is low, a catacomb when your summon needs improvement, or an area containing flask-upgrade items when healing is the limiting factor. Return to the main objective once that detour has paid off.

Do not mistake optional for unimportant
Side dungeons are optional in the sense that you can continue without clearing every one, but they can hold rewards that make the main route easier. Evergaols and caves also offer distinct encounters and materials. Decide based on your goals rather than assuming the main path contains everything worth seeing.
Be honest about quest coverage
There is no verified, exhaustive quest-by-quest route in the official material used for this guide. A general exploration strategy can preserve opportunities, but it cannot promise that every quest, branch, or reward will remain available forever. If a particular character quest matters to you, consult a current dedicated walkthrough for that quest and follow its timing instructions separately from your combat plan.

Shadow of the Erdtree is an expansion for the base game. It adds a separate Land of Shadow with its own weapons, equipment, enemies, bosses, and plotlines, and the official expansion page states that the base game is required. It is optional additional content, not a prerequisite for completing or exploring the base game.
For this guide’s purpose, do not buy or enter the expansion as a difficulty solution. The systems that reduce pressure—exploration, flask improvements, weapon upgrades, attributes, equipment management, and Spirit Ashes—belong to the core gameplay loop. Finish or explore the base game according to your own goals, then treat the expansion as another campaign when you want more content.
Version and platform checks
Bandai Namco’s version 1.17 patch notes are dated August 27, 2026 and cover PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Steam. Apply the latest update before playing and check the notes for your platform before relying on advice tied to balance, equipment, or summons. Exact values and behavior can change even when the broader strategy remains sound.
The official site also describes a Tarnished Edition for Nintendo Switch 2 and a Tarnished Pack for PlayStation, Xbox, and Steam. A Bandai Namco community page dated August 31, 2026 lists the Tarnished Pack’s standard price as $4.99, with local-currency variation. Its starting classes and cosmetics are not needed to make the game easier, so they are not part of the preparation plan above.

- Staying at a blocked boss for too long: repeated attempts do not replace upgrades, flask improvements, or a route change.
- Ignoring equipment load: heavier protection can become a liability if it pushes you into the heavy-roll range.
- Spreading levels without a survival goal: adding damage while dying in one hit does not address the immediate problem.
- Carrying an unupgraded weapon through a new region: smithing stones from tunnels exist specifically to improve weapons.
- Saving Spirit Ashes because they feel “unfair”: the publisher presents spirits as a way to help against tougher foes.
- Following Grace as if it were a complete checklist: side dungeons and their rewards sit outside the main directional trail.
- Assuming the expansion is required: Shadow of the Erdtree is additional content that requires the base game; it is not needed for the base-game route.
A compact decision guide
| If your problem is… | Try this first | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You die from one or two ordinary hits | Invest in Vigor and improve flask capacity or effectiveness | More health and healing give you room to learn |
| Your dodge feels slow | Lower equipment weight or raise Endurance | Staying below the heavy-roll range preserves a more usable roll |
| The boss takes too long to defeat | Upgrade your weapon with smithing stones | Shorter fights reduce opportunities for mistakes |
| You cannot heal safely | Try a Spirit Ash if the encounter permits it | Divided attention can create healing windows |
| You keep running out of healing | Search for Golden Seeds and Sacred Tears | They increase flask uses and effectiveness |
| You do not know where to go | Read Guidance of Grace, then investigate nearby side dungeons | You get a main direction without ignoring useful detours |
| You feel underpowered everywhere | Leave the current area and explore an earlier or nearby region | Levels, materials, equipment, and flask upgrades accumulate through exploration |
The most reliable “easy mode” in Elden Ring is a loop: identify the pressure point, explore for the resource that addresses it, adjust your build or equipment, and return when the encounter is asking for execution rather than endurance. That approach keeps the game’s exploration and story intact while giving you practical control over how hard each fight feels.
