Fortnite is easier to learn when you stick with the input method you already know, adjust controls gradually, and practice in Creative before putting pressure on every public match. Matchmaking takes skill into account, but it does not guarantee beginner-only or perfectly even lobbies.
Start with the controls that feel familiar
Fortnite supports controller and mouse-and-keyboard play; Epic does not identify either as inherently better for beginners. Start with the device you already use comfortably instead of changing input methods and settings at the same time.

Find the settings for your input
- Open the in-game menu and choose Settings.
- Select the tab for the way you play: the keyboard-and-mouse tab for those inputs, or the gamepad tab for a controller.
- On PC, select the controller configuration in the relevant box when using a controller.
- Check that the intended game mode is selected. Epic notes that available settings can depend on the current mode, so a setting may not appear if you are looking in another mode’s configuration.
These are Epic’s documented directions; menu labels and layouts can change with updates. If a control option seems missing, confirm the selected mode and input tab first. Epic’s controls guide covers the current settings route.

Change a single setting, then test it in a low-pressure session. If movement or aiming feels less comfortable, undo that change before trying another. There is no universally established sensitivity number or control preset for beginners, so avoid copying a setting just because it works for someone else.

Practice in Creative before raising the stakes
Creative gives you access to experiences made by Epic and island creators, making it a useful place to get comfortable with movement, aiming, and the controls you have chosen without treating each attempt like a public-match result. Experiences differ, and Epic’s Creative guide does not designate one particular island as the beginner choice. Explore Fortnite Creative to find an experience that suits what you want to practice.
Use practice to answer a specific question: Can you move and aim comfortably? Do your chosen controls feel predictable? If not, return to settings and make one small adjustment. Creative’s interface and available experiences can change, so it is more reliable to explore the current options than to depend on a fixed menu path or an unverified island code.

What matchmaking can—and cannot—do for beginners
Epic says Fortnite matchmaking considers player skill, making it more likely that players of similar skill will be matched. It also cautions that skill levels will not be identical for everyone in a match. As your skill improves, you may face more skilled opponents. That means matchmaking can help shape the competition, but it cannot promise easy matches or a beginner-only lobby. Epic’s matchmaking explanation does not establish that every match contains bots or provide a detailed account of the algorithm.

Ranked is optional; you do not need to enter it to learn the game. Epic describes Ranked matchmaking as using your current rank or the highest-ranked teammate’s rank. If you are still learning basic controls, unranked play lets you focus on playing without making Ranked progression your goal.

There is also an account prerequisite to know about: Epic’s guide says an account that has never previously been used to log into Fortnite must complete the “Outlast 500 opponents” quest before Ranked can be enabled in Battle Royale, Zero Build, Reload, or Reload Zero Build. A simple beginner progression
- Keep your familiar input. Begin with controller or mouse and keyboard based on what feels natural to you.
- Set up the relevant controls. Use the matching settings tab and confirm the right mode is selected.
- Test in Creative. Practice movement and aiming in an experience you find comfortable.
- Make small adjustments. Change one control at a time and keep it only if it helps.
- Try public matches with realistic expectations. Skill is considered in matchmaking, but opponents will not necessarily be evenly matched.
- Choose Ranked only if you want that competition. It is not a prerequisite for learning Fortnite.
