If that is still too forgiving, add a datapack; datapacks can strengthen mobs and alter caves without installing a mod loader. Mods provide the biggest changes, but they require a loader and an exact Minecraft-version match.

This order lets you increase difficulty gradually. Vanilla settings are easiest to enable and least likely to break a world, datapacks add targeted challenges, and mods can introduce entirely new survival systems such as thirst or temperature.

Choose your difficulty tier first

For a first attempt, use Hard plus /gamerule naturalRegeneration false. This creates a demanding survival world without adding files. Move to a datapack when you want stronger enemies or more dangerous exploration, and use mods only when you want systems that vanilla Minecraft does not provide.
Make Minecraft harder without mods
Set the world to Hard
Choose Hard in the world-creation difficulty control. Hard is the highest ordinary difficulty and does not impose permadeath, so a death costs your inventory and position rather than ending the world. It is the baseline for most harder-difficulty datapacks.

Turn off natural regeneration
Disabling natural regeneration is the defining change in an Ultra Hardcore-style rule set: ordinary damage no longer restores itself while you wait. You must manage other healing sources and avoid taking unnecessary hits.
Java Edition 1.16 or later: new world
- Create a world and open its game-rule settings.
- Find the rule named Natural Regeneration.
- Turn it off before creating the world.
- Keep a note of the rule change if other players will join, because the absence of automatic healing changes every early-game decision.
Java Edition 1.16 or later: existing world
An existing Java world can be changed through a temporary LAN session:

- Pause the game.
- Select Open to LAN.
- Set Allow Cheats to on.
- Start the LAN world.
- Open chat and run
/gamerule naturalRegeneration false. - Exit the LAN session. The rule remains applied to the world.
Allow Cheats is required for this route. Opening a LAN world is therefore a deliberate permissions change, even if nobody else joins.
Bedrock Edition
- Open the world settings.
- Go to Advanced in the game-rules area.
- Locate the natural-regeneration rule.
- Disable it and load the world.
The exact labels can vary by edition and release, so verify that the rule is actually off before beginning a serious challenge.

Turning off natural regeneration does not remove every healing mechanic. Health can still be restored by:

Those items become strategic resources rather than emergency conveniences. Carrying food remains useful for hunger and saturation, but eating ordinary food will not refill missing hearts under this rule.
Use Hardcore carefully
Hardcore adds permadeath to the challenge. Treat it as a separate commitment from simply selecting Hard. Current references disagree about two details: whether difficulty is locked to Hard in every edition and setup, and what the game does after death. Reports describe spectator access in some configurations and a deleted or unusable world in others.
Because those behaviors can differ between Java and Bedrock and may change between releases, check the current Minecraft Wiki entry for Hardcore immediately before creating the world. Do not test the mode on a valuable save. Make a separate copy or a disposable test world first, then confirm the death behavior you expect.
Other game rules
doMobGriefing appears in game-rule lists and is associated with whether mobs can change blocks. Its exact current behavior was not verified here against a primary reference, so do not treat it as a guaranteed difficulty switch. Check the current Minecraft Wiki Game rules page for the edition and version you are using before changing it.
Harder datapacks without a mod loader
Datapacks are the middle option between vanilla rules and mods. They can change functions, loot, mob attributes and world events while leaving the game’s mod-loader setup untouched. Their main limitation is compatibility: packs listed for versions around 1.16 to 1.21 may not work correctly on a newer release.

Datapacks listed as harder-difficulty options

Minecraft But It’s Insanely Hard and Impossible Difficulty also appear as harder-mode datapack names, but their specific mechanics were not established here. Read the current pack description before installing either one.
Install a datapack
A commonly described installation flow is:
- Download the datapack file from its current project page.
- Create a new Minecraft world for the test. A new world makes it easier to identify whether the pack is responsible for a change and avoids risking a long-running save.
- On the world-creation screen, open Data Packs.
- Drag the downloaded pack into that window.
- Move it into the enabled list if the screen presents separate available and selected lists.
- Create the world and look for any confirmation or in-game instructions supplied by the pack.
Do not assume that a zip file must be extracted. Follow the project’s stated format; changing the archive structure can make the pack invisible. If the pack does not appear, the most likely cause is an unsupported game version or an incorrectly structured download.
Check compatibility before committing
- Compare the pack’s listed Minecraft version with the version shown in your launcher.
- Check whether the author names Java Edition, Bedrock Edition or both.
- Read the pack’s installation notes for required companion packs or commands.
- Test it in a disposable world before adding it to a long-term survival save.
- Keep the original download so you can identify exactly which version was installed.
Datapack support can lag behind a new Minecraft release. A pack that worked on an earlier 1.21 build may not be maintained for a later release, even when the version number looks close.
Remove or replace a datapack
Datapacks are generally easier to reverse than mods. Use a test world, disable the pack through that world’s Data Packs controls when supported, or start a fresh world without it. Do not assume that removing a pack will undo every block, item or mob state it created; if the pack has changed the world, restoring a pre-install backup is the reliable recovery path.

Mods can go beyond stronger mobs and healing rules. They may add survival systems such as thirst, hydration or temperature, alter progression, or combine many changes into a curated challenge. The cost is setup complexity: you need a mod loader, a game version supported by that loader, and mod files built for the same combination.

Examples named for harder play
- Tough As Nails is associated with temperature, thirst and hydration mechanics.
- RLCraft is commonly presented as a substantially harder modded survival experience.
- Apotheosis is also listed among harder-mode options.
Loader support, supported Minecraft versions and current mechanics for these examples were not verified against their primary project pages here. Treat the names as starting points, not as a guarantee that a particular release will install or behave as expected.
Plan a modded installation
- Choose the exact Minecraft release you intend to play. Do not start by downloading a random current mod file.
- Choose a mod loader that the selected mod explicitly supports.
- Install the loader for that same Minecraft release and launch it once to create the profile.
- Download only mod files that list the identical game version and loader.
- Place the files where that loader expects them, following its current installation instructions.
- Launch a new test world before opening your main save.
- Add additional mods one at a time so a crash or unexpected rule can be traced to a specific change.
Exact folder names and loader menus vary, so use the current instructions supplied by the loader and mod author rather than a guide written for another release. A mod made for one loader is not automatically usable by another.

- Game-version mismatch: the mod targets a different Minecraft release.
- Loader mismatch: the file was made for another loader.
- Dependency missing: the mod requires a library or companion file that is not installed.
- Pack conflict: two additions change the same systems and cannot coexist.
- Old world data: a modded save contains content that the current setup no longer recognizes.
If the launcher crashes, remove the newest mod from the test profile and launch again. If the game starts but the world behaves strangely, stop testing that save and restore the pre-install backup before changing more files.

Low-risk challenge
Select Hard and disable natural regeneration. This combination changes combat and resource planning while preserving ordinary respawning. It is the best starting point if you have never played without automatic healing.
Exploration-focused challenge
Use Hard plus a datapack that increases cave danger, buffs mobs and makes totems harder to obtain, such as the listed Harder Difficulty pack. The challenge grows mainly when you travel, mine or fight rather than by imposing permadeath immediately.

Post-dragon escalation
Use Expert Mode if you want the world to become harder after the Ender Dragon. Its documented trigger is defeating the dragon and then accepting the prompt to enable expert mode; most mobs receive twice the health and twice the damage afterward.
Maximum survival pressure
Combine a carefully tested mod setup with Hardcore only after you understand the modded systems. Temperature, thirst and other new mechanics can create failure conditions that are difficult to diagnose during a one-life run. Verify the mod and Hardcore behavior in separate test worlds first.
Troubleshoot the common setup problems
The natural-regeneration command is rejected
On Java, confirm that you opened the world to LAN with Allow Cheats enabled before running the command. Check the spelling and capitalization of naturalRegeneration. On Bedrock, use the Advanced game-rule control instead of the Java command route.
The datapack is missing from Data Packs
Check that you downloaded the pack rather than a web page, preserved its expected archive structure, and selected a compatible Minecraft version. If it still does not appear, test the file in a new world and consult the pack’s current installation notes.
The datapack loads but nothing changes
Read the pack description for an activation step, such as a function command or a progression trigger. Some packs alter only particular dimensions, depths or milestones. A pack such as Expert Mode does not apply its documented changes until after the Ender Dragon is defeated and the prompt is accepted.

Confirm the Minecraft version, loader and every dependency. Remove the last-added mod, launch the test profile, and add files back individually. Never troubleshoot by repeatedly opening a valuable survival save with an unverified configuration.
Hardcore behavior is not what you expected
Stop before investing more time in the world. Hardcore death and difficulty-lock behavior can differ by edition and setup, so verify the current rules for your exact release. Use a disposable test world to confirm whether death leads to spectator access or makes the world unavailable.
Pre-game checklist
- Decide whether you want tougher combat, harsher exploration, new survival systems or permanent death.
- Record your Minecraft edition and exact version.
- For vanilla play, select Hard and decide whether natural regeneration should be disabled.
- If using Hardcore, test the death behavior before starting your real run.
- For datapacks, confirm the listed version and install in a new world first.
- For mods, match the loader, Minecraft version, mod version and dependencies.
- Keep a backup before changing a long-running world.
- Add only one major difficulty change at a time so you can identify its effects.
The Bottom Line
Start with Hard and naturalRegeneration false. Add a compatible datapack when you want tougher mobs or caves, and move to a carefully version-matched mod setup only when you want new survival systems. Reserve Hardcore for a world you are prepared to lose, and verify its edition-specific death behavior first.
