In Manor Lords, trade and taxes put money into two different pools. Selling surplus goods through a Trading Post increases a region’s regional wealth; Manor taxes transfer some of that wealth into your lord’s treasury. To build a sustainable income, keep exports ahead of local needs, account for trade-route costs and imports, and tax only what the region can spare.
Understand the two kinds of wealth
Regional wealth is the region’s economic pool, used to buy and sell goods. Treasury is the lord’s money, used for obligations such as the annual royal tax. Trading increases regional wealth when exports bring in more than imports and route costs consume. Manor taxation draws from regional wealth and adds to the treasury; it does not create wealth from nothing. The official wiki’s FAQ puts the relationship plainly: “No Regional Wealth = no tax income to your Treasury.” Read the official wiki FAQ.

Build regional wealth with trade
Export genuine surplus
Use a Trading Post to sell goods your region can produce beyond what it needs. Before setting a good for export, consider food, fuel, construction materials, and other local uses. If exports drain stock needed by residents or production chains, the apparent income can undermine the settlement.
The official FAQ cautions that production and consumption figures are not fully visible, so there is no reliable universal profit forecast. Watch stock levels over time and check the current trade interface rather than assuming a fixed surplus or profit.

Check routes and prices
The official Trade page says major trades require a purchased trade route. Route costs reduce the value of sales, so check the cost before committing and consider whether expected exports can justify it. The Trade Logistics development is listed as a way to reduce route costs. See the official wiki’s Trade page.
Prices respond to market supply: when a good is oversupplied, its export price falls and imports become cheaper; when undersupplied, the reverse can happen. Check prices in your save instead of relying on a fixed price from an older guide. If expanding one export makes it less rewarding, reassess the plan rather than continuing to increase production automatically.

Turn regional wealth into treasury income with taxes
Set tax policy at the Manor to move a portion of regional wealth into your treasury. Taxation is useful when you need lord’s funds, but the money comes out of the same regional pool used for trade. If the region has little wealth, a tax policy cannot provide meaningful treasury income; if it draws too much, it can leave less available for imports and other economic needs. Choose a level that fits both your treasury obligations and the region’s ability to replenish its wealth. The official Development page and Beginner’s Guide describe the game’s development and economic systems.

Choose an export plan that fits your region
There is no source-backed best export for every settlement. Resources, local demand, route costs, production setup, and changing market supply all affect the result. Compare plans using these practical questions:
Rank #3
- Net regional wealth: Will export proceeds exceed the cost of imported goods and trade routes?
- Reliability: Can production sustain a surplus without compromising essential local uses?
- Market exposure: Is the good already abundant, and could additional exports lower its sale price?
- Setup time and cost: Does the plan require a route purchase or a production chain that delays sales?
- Treasury needs: How much wealth can be taxed while leaving the trade economy viable?
A third-party trade guide marks its recommendations as verified for patch 0.8.097 and favors concentrating on a small number of exports, with processing where appropriate. Treat that as a version-specific strategy to test in your save, not a guaranteed optimal build or an official rule. The official FAQ notes the limits of visible production and consumption figures, which make blanket rankings especially uncertain.

- Check local needs and stock trends. Identify what the region can produce without putting food, fuel, construction, or other essential uses at risk.
- Select a real surplus. Start exports only where stock trends suggest production can exceed local use.
- Review the trade interface. Check the current price, whether the route must be purchased, and the route cost. Consider Trade Logistics if it fits your development plan.
- Monitor the market and your stocks. Supply can shift prices, while exports can shrink local reserves. Adjust when either changes.
- Tax with a treasury goal in mind. Once regional wealth is replenishing, use Manor taxes to fund lordly obligations without draining the pool the trade economy depends on.
Manor Lords is Early Access, and its official wiki warns that information may be incomplete or change as development continues. Treat in-game prices and mechanics as current for your save, particularly when following advice tied to a specific patch.
