Choose the right OBS source

OBS documents VLC Video as a playlist-capable source, while Media Source is appropriate for a single file. See the OBS Project’s Media Sources documentation.
Set up an MP4 playlist in OBS on Windows
- Check OBS’s architecture. If you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. OBS says VLC Video depends on VLC libraries and will not be available as a source when VLC is not installed.
- Install VLC, then open or restart OBS. If you installed VLC while OBS was open and still cannot find the source, close and reopen OBS before checking again.
- Add a VLC Video source. In the OBS scene where the videos should appear, use the Sources panel’s + button and choose VLC Video. Give the source a recognizable name.
- Add the files to its playlist. Use the source properties to add your MP4 files. Start with one known-good video, then add the rest once it plays correctly.
- Set the playback behavior. Keep Shuffle off for the listed order. Turn on Loop Playlist to repeat the list. Set the option controlling whether playback stops when the source is not visible according to whether you want it to continue in hidden scenes.
- Test video and audio in OBS. Confirm the picture appears in the preview and that audio is audible through OBS’s audio monitoring or output. Check another item in the playlist before relying on the full list.
Why an MP4 may fail even when the extension looks right
MP4 identifies a container, not a guaranteed combination of audio and video codecs. Two files ending in .mp4 can contain different encoded streams, and compatibility depends on those streams as well as the playback setup. Microsoft lists MP4 among Windows Media Player’s supported file types but notes that installing codecs can extend support; that does not guarantee every MP4 will work in OBS. OBS’s Audio/Video Formats Guide treats containers and codecs separately, and VideoLAN lists MP4 and H.264/AVC support in VLC’s features.
Inspect a problem file in VLC’s media information or another media inspection tool before converting it. Note the video codec, audio codec, resolution, frame rate, bit depth, and audio layout, then test that file in the actual OBS VLC Video source. The official format references do not establish one encoding recipe that works for every OBS and VLC installation. VideoLAN also notes that H.264 playback may be too slow in some circumstances, so hardware and file characteristics can matter; see its Windows FAQ.

Troubleshoot a blank, silent, or stuttering playlist

When converting a file makes sense
Convert only after inspection and testing point to an encoding problem. Changing a filename extension is not conversion. Remuxing changes the container without re-encoding the audio or video streams; transcoding decodes and re-encodes one or more streams and can affect quality, file size, and processing time. Choose based on whether the existing codecs are supported by the intended player and whether preserving quality or reducing size matters. Hardware acceleration may affect processing time when available, but no single conversion preset is guaranteed for every file and setup.
- Keep a copy of the original file.
- Choose remuxing only if the streams themselves are suitable and the container is the problem; otherwise, consider transcoding to a format supported by your playback setup.
- Test the converted copy in VLC, then in OBS’s VLC Video source and playlist.
Does being in India change the setup?
No country-specific change appears in the cited OBS and VLC setup guidance: the same Windows, OBS, and VLC steps apply. This workflow is based on OBS documentation published in 2022 and 2023; it is not a compatibility matrix for every current OBS and VLC build. If your installation behaves differently, verify the versions and test the actual files you plan to stream.
