To make local OBS recordings smaller without reducing your YouTube stream quality, change the recording settings separately from the streaming settings. In OBS, open Settings → Output, select Advanced output mode, then tune the Recording tab. Recording bitrate or quality controls the file saved on your computer; stream bitrate controls what OBS uploads to YouTube.
For a stable YouTube stream, choose live settings according to your target resolution and the upload capacity you actually have—not a single India-wide bitrate. YouTube’s current H.264 guidance includes 5 Mbps for 1080p30 and 8 Mbps for 720p30 or 720p60. YouTube’s live encoder settings
Reduce the recording size without changing the live stream
- In OBS, open Settings → Output.
- If Output Mode is Simple, select a recording quality below Indistinguishable or Lossless. OBS describes High Quality as a medium-file-size option.
- To set recording and live-stream quality independently, change Output Mode to Advanced, then open the separate Recording and Streaming tabs.
- On the Recording tab, choose a supported encoder and lower its quality or bitrate. Leave the streaming settings as they are if you want the live stream to retain its current quality.
- Record a short sample with a representative game or scene. Check the file size, image detail and motion, and confirm the recording plays and edits in your usual software.
OBS notes that recording settings other than Same as stream can use additional computer resources. Test the settings during a representative stream before relying on them. OBS recording guide OBS recording encoder presets OBS overview
What reduces file size—and what you give up
Recording size falls when you reduce the amount of encoded video information. Change one setting at a time so you can see which trade-off matters for your content.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Lower recording bitrate or quality: uses less storage, but can make artifacts more visible, especially in fast or visually complex gameplay.
- Lower recording resolution: for example, record at 720p instead of 1080p. This reduces detail, including small text and fine game visuals. Preserve the source aspect ratio.
- Lower recording frame rate: can reduce size, but makes motion less smooth. It may suit slower content better than fast gameplay.
- Use a more efficient codec: can reduce file size at comparable quality, but may affect editing compatibility or computer workload.
There is no universal recording bitrate: the result depends on the encoder, codec, resolution, frame rate and scene complexity. OBS’s published encoder examples are tied to particular recording scenarios, not a one-size-fits-all YouTube setting. OBS overview OBS hardware encoding guide
Codec and encoder trade-offs
OBS lists AV1, HEVC and H.264 in that order as its quality/file-size preference for high-quality local recording. Treat that as a comparison, not an instruction to switch without checking your system. AV1 may have weaker editing-software support, and real-time software encoding requires a high-end CPU. HEVC has compatibility and licensing considerations; H.264 remains widely compatible. Hardware encoders move work from the CPU to GPU hardware, but older hardware generations may deliver lower image quality at the same bitrate. Confirm that your editing and playback tools support the selected codec. OBS audio and video formats OBS hardware encoding guide

Why Lossless recordings can become enormous
OBS estimates that its Lossless recording preset can use around 7 GB of data per minute. That is an approximate figure in OBS’s 2023 preset guide; the guide also warns that the preset uses the CPU encoder. Lossless is rarely a practical choice when disk space is limited. Keep YouTube streaming stable on your connection
India does not have one suitable OBS bitrate for every creator. The relevant factors are your intended stream resolution and frame rate, ingest codec, and stable outbound upload capacity at the time you stream. YouTube notes that download speed is often faster than upload speed. Test upload speed under typical household network use; YouTube Help says, “We recommend running a speed test to test your upload bitrate.” YouTube streaming tips YouTube live encoder settings

The following values are from YouTube’s current H.264 live encoder guidance, accessed in 2026. They are recommendations for the listed output modes, not a guarantee that your connection can sustain them.
| Output | H.264 bitrate guidance |
|---|---|
| 1080p30 | 5 Mbps recommended |
| 1080p60 | 6 Mbps minimum; 17 Mbps recommended |
| 720p30 | 3 Mbps minimum; 8 Mbps recommended |
| 720p60 | 3 Mbps minimum; 8 Mbps recommended |
YouTube lists different bitrate ranges for AV1 and H.265, so use the row for your selected ingest codec rather than applying H.264 numbers to every stream. Its guidance also recommends CBR and a 2-second keyframe frequency, not exceeding 4 seconds. Check the current table when configuring OBS, since YouTube guidance may change. Set a realistic bitrate for variable upload
- Measure your outbound upload speed while your network is being used as it normally is during a stream.
- Compare the result with the bitrate for your chosen resolution, frame rate and codec. Leave headroom for network variation and other devices; a speed-test result is not a promise of sustained capacity.
- If OBS reports dropped frames from network connection, reduce the live bitrate and test again. OBS suggests 75% of total upload speed as a starting point when troubleshooting; it is guidance, not a guaranteed formula.
- When possible, connect the streaming computer by Ethernet. If connection trouble continues, OBS also suggests trying a different server.
If the connection cannot reliably support your target, lowering live resolution or frame rate can be a better choice than keeping a higher setting that drops frames. These live adjustments are separate from the local recording profile. OBS connection troubleshooting YouTube streaming tips

Choose MKV as the recording container when you want a recording to remain recoverable if OBS or the computer stops ungracefully. If your editor or workflow needs MP4, use OBS’s built-in remuxing feature after recording. Remuxing changes the container without re-encoding: it helps with recovery and compatibility, but does not meaningfully shrink the video. OBS recording guide OBS audio and video formats

Troubleshoot oversized files or unstable streams
- The local file is too large, but the live stream is fine: lower the recording quality or bitrate in the Advanced Recording tab. Do not lower the streaming bitrate unless the live stream itself needs adjustment.
- The recording looks blocky: raise recording quality or bitrate, or use a more efficient supported encoder. Review a sample with fast movement, where artifacts may be easier to spot.
- Text or game details are hard to read: restore some recording resolution or quality. Reducing resolution discards detail that a higher bitrate cannot fully restore.
- Motion looks choppy: increase the recording frame rate if smoother movement is important for the content.
- The stream drops frames while the recording is acceptable: check actual upload capacity and reduce the live bitrate or output demand; recording and streaming settings are independent in Advanced mode.
- The recording will not open in an editor: check that the editor supports the chosen codec. If the issue is the container, remux MKV to MP4 in OBS; remuxing does not re-encode.
- Changing the recording profile makes OBS struggle: test a simpler encoder or preset. Separate recording settings can require more computer resources.
