Check which counter is rising before changing settings. A video file can add decoding and scene workload, but its presence alone does not show that it is the cause.
Identify which frames OBS is reporting
During a short test stream, watch OBS’s performance counters and connection indicator. OBS distinguishes connection-related dropped frames from local rendering and encoding lag; each points to a different set of fixes. OBS Project’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide describes dropped frames as a connection to the remote server that is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate.
| What you see | Likely path | Start here |
|---|---|---|
| Dropped-frame counter rises; connection indicator degrades | Connection to the ingest server or bitrate beyond stable capacity | Check upload stability and bitrate; test Ethernet and network software. |
| Rendering lag rises | GPU workload for scene composition and rendering | Reduce output demands and simplify scenes or sources. |
| Encoding lag or “encoding overloaded” appears | Encoder or system workload | Reduce output demands; consider a supported hardware encoder. |
| Stutter coincides with one media source | Media decoding or added source/scene workload may be involved | Compare playback outside OBS, test hardware decoding, and try a smaller source. |
| OBS counters stay clear, but viewers report buffering | Viewer playback or network conditions may be involved | Check viewer-side conditions rather than assuming OBS is dropping frames. |
The last two rows are diagnostic leads, not proof of a cause. OBS’s Stream Buffering Troubleshooting guide notes that viewers can buffer even when the broadcaster is not dropping frames.
If OBS reports dropped frames
Start with the path from your computer to YouTube’s ingest server, not the video file. OBS’s connection guidance suggests setting bitrate at about 75% of total upload speed as a starting point. That is a rule of thumb, not a guarantee: a speed test’s peak result does not prove your connection can sustain that rate throughout a stream.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Lower the configured video bitrate to a level your connection can sustain consistently, while observing the platform’s limits for your stream.
- If you are on Wi-Fi, test a wired Ethernet connection. Wi-Fi instability can cause connection drops; Ethernet will not fix rendering or encoding lag.
- Try another streaming server if OBS offers one for the service.
- If drops continue, check whether a VPN, security software, network-prioritizing utility, or outdated network driver is interfering.
OBS also documents Windows-only network optimization/TCP pacing and dynamic bitrate adjustment. Treat these as later diagnostic options, not universal fixes. OBS cautions that dynamic bitrate does not resolve the underlying cause and may lower video quality.
If OBS reports rendering or encoding lag
Rendering lag means OBS is falling behind while composing and rendering scenes; encoding lag means the system is falling behind while producing the encoded output. Neither counter, by itself, proves that the file is at fault. OBS’s Encoding Performance Troubleshooting guide recommends reducing the work OBS has to do.

- Lower the output resolution or frame rate if the current settings are more than the stream needs. If 60 fps is unstable, OBS notes that moving to 30 fps reduces work.
- Simplify scenes and reduce demanding sources or filters.
- Close other GPU-heavy programs while testing.
- If the video is much larger in resolution than its on-screen size, test a lower-resolution copy.
If encoding remains the bottleneck, a supported hardware encoder can move encoding work from the CPU to a specialized component. OBS says modern hardware encoders generally have low performance impact; earlier generations can produce lower quality at the same bitrate than software x264 using its default veryfast preset. Check the log and your available hardware before changing encoders or buying equipment.
Test whether the video source contributes
Compare the same file’s playback outside OBS with a test in which its Media Source is visible or active. If stutter appears only in OBS, the file’s decoding or the extra scene workload may be involved; that correlation still does not identify a definitive cause.

OBS Media Source supports formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM. Its documented controls include playback speed, looping, restarting when active, and “Use hardware decoding when available.” That decoding option is off by default in the documented settings and applies only to file types supported by the installed GPU decoder. Test toggling it while watching the same OBS counters; hardware decoding is not guaranteed to help every file or system. See OBS Project’s Media Sources guide.
