The eight steps below outline the current workflow; they are not a verified reproduction of a specific 2024 guide.
Before you start: understand what you are making
Roblox hair is a 3D avatar accessory, not a classic clothing texture. A basic rigid accessory uses a mesh, a texture, and an attachment point that connects it to the avatar’s head. Roblox’s rigid accessories documentation describes the required mesh structure and how to create an accessory in Studio.
You will need a third-party 3D modeling tool and Roblox Studio. Roblox names Blender and Maya as examples, and provides a beginner tutorial and reference files in its accessory creation guide. Blender is not mandatory.
How to make Roblox hair in 8 steps
1. Plan the hairstyle and its category
Decide whether you are making a complete hairstyle or a partial feature such as bangs or braids. Complete hairstyles that cover the head belong in the Hair category. Partial styles may fit Hair, Hat, or Face, while facial hair belongs in Face. Roblox’s Marketplace policy explains these category rules.

2. Model the hairstyle
Use Blender, Maya, or another 3D tool to build the hair’s shape. Keep the form suitable for an avatar accessory and organize the mesh for export. Roblox’s workflow uses a third-party modeling application; its creation guide includes tutorial and reference resources for getting started.
3. Create the mesh, texture, and attachment
Prepare the hairstyle geometry and its texture, then make sure there is an attachment point to connect the accessory to the avatar’s head. In Studio, the attachment is an Attachment object; Roblox’s Accessory Fitting Tool can generate attachment points. Textures can be assigned with SurfaceAppearance or TextureID. The rigid accessories guide says rigid accessories use a single mesh object represented in Studio as a MeshPart under one Model.

4. Export the model
Export the avatar components together in one FBX or glTF file, as described in Roblox’s accessory creation workflow. Check the export before moving on so the mesh and required accessory parts are included.
5. Import it into Roblox Studio
Import the exported file into Studio and process it as an avatar asset. Follow the accessory import and fitting steps in Roblox’s rigid accessories documentation. The goal at this stage is to turn your model into an accessory that Studio recognizes and can validate.

6. Fit it to the avatar and inspect the result
Use the Accessory Fitting Tool to fit the hair and check its scale and placement. Test it on multiple character bodies, and try it with different animations and other accessories; Roblox recommends these checks because combinations can affect how an item looks and behaves. Adjust the mesh or attachment and repeat as needed. Roblox describes 3D accessory creation as an iterative process in its creation guide.
7. Check your asset and publishing eligibility
Before upload, confirm that the hair is in the right category and complies with Roblox’s rules. Upload only content you have the right to use; do not copy Roblox or another creator’s items, and avoid designs that obscure avatars or the user’s view. Review the current Marketplace policy for eligibility, community, and asset requirements.

For Marketplace publication, Roblox’s current policy requires ID verification or a linked parental account, two-step verification, a publishing advance, and Roblox Plus or Premium 1000/2200 for the creator or group owner. The policy also requires the qualifying membership to keep existing content on sale. Requirements and fees can change, so check the linked policy before proceeding.
8. Upload, validate, and submit
- In Studio, upload the item as an Accessory and select Avatar Asset and the correct asset type.
- Review Studio’s technical validation results and fix any errors before submission.
- Submit the asset for moderation. Roblox’s publishing guide explains this Studio submission flow.
Test the asset and finalize its thumbnail before uploading: Roblox says uploaded assets and thumbnails cannot be edited, so a correction may require removal and re-upload. Moderation is part of submission, not a guarantee of approval.

What publishing can cost
Roblox’s current Marketplace fees page lists an 80 Robux upload fee per avatar-asset submission and a 500 Robux upload fee for assets that use an emissive mask. It lists a 1,000 Robux publishing advance for a non-limited Hair item. These are platform figures on the current page, accessed in 2026; check the fee page immediately before submitting because fees may change.
The upload fee and publishing advance are different charges. The fee page says upload fees generally are not refunded if moderation rejects an item, while the publishing advance is described as refundable. Do not treat the advance as the upload fee or assume every payment is refundable.
