Smelt cobblestone in a regular furnace to make stone, then smelt that stone in a regular furnace to make smooth stone. The second smelt is what produces smooth stone; a crafting table does not make it directly.
Make smooth stone in two furnace steps
- Get cobblestone. Mine ordinary stone with a pickaxe, or obtain cobblestone another way.
- Smelt cobblestone into stone. Put cobblestone and fuel in a regular furnace. The output is stone.
- Smelt stone into smooth stone. Put the stone from the first step back in the furnace with fuel. The output is smooth stone.
In the Java 26.3 recipe data described by MC Toolkit’s guide, published September 23, 2026, each smelt takes 200 ticks, or 10 seconds. That timing is version-scoped; it should not be treated as a verified guarantee for every edition or platform.
Can you skip the first smelt?
If you mine ordinary stone with a pickaxe enchanted with Silk Touch, you get stone instead of cobblestone. That skips the cobblestone-to-stone step, but you still need to smelt the stone once in a regular furnace to make smooth stone. For a small amount, the standard two-smelt route works without needing Silk Touch.
Use a regular furnace, not a blast furnace
For vanilla Minecraft, use a regular furnace for both steps. A blast furnace is crafted using smooth stone, but the cited guides say it processes ores and metal items—not cobblestone or stone. Mods can alter furnace behavior, so treat any different recipe or machine as modded rather than part of the vanilla method.

What smooth stone is used for
- Building: Smooth stone provides a clean, uniform block finish.
- Smooth stone slabs: CurseForge’s guide reports that three smooth stone blocks make six slabs in a crafting table; a stonecutter makes two slabs from one block. See the CurseForge guide for that recipe comparison.
- Blast furnace crafting: Smooth stone is one of the ingredients in the blast furnace recipe.
MC Toolkit’s Java 26.3 guide also lists smooth-stone slabs in the armor-stand recipe. Recipes and details can vary by edition or version, and the available guides do not establish a current Java-versus-Bedrock comparison.
