To farm installed freighter upgrades in No Man’s Sky, explore a derelict freighter and choose a Salvaged Fleet Unit at its Engineering Control terminal. Choose a Cargo Bulkhead instead if you want another freighter inventory slot. These are different rewards from Salvaged Frigate Modules, which unlock freighter technology blueprints rather than installing an upgrade directly.
Know which freighter upgrade you need
There are two separate upgrade paths. Salvaged Fleet Units are installed as freighter upgrades; Salvaged Frigate Modules are materials spent to unlock technology blueprints at the freighter bridge. Farming one does not substitute for the other.

Find and complete a derelict freighter

Get an Emergency Broadcast Receiver from a Space Station Scrap Dealer, or investigate a naturally detected derelict. Hello Games’ Desolation update says Iteration Helios offers one free receiver each week.

Use the receiver to seek a derelict, then board and explore it. Collect the logs and make your way to the Engineering Control terminal.

At Engineering Control, choose the reward that matches your goal: a Salvaged Fleet Unit for an installed performance upgrade, or a Cargo Bulkhead for inventory capacity.

Install a Salvaged Fleet Unit aboard your freighter and inspect its generated effect. Freighter hyperdrive modules can have warp-range and fuel-efficiency bonuses; their effects are procedural, as described in the NMS Wiki Team’s Hyperdrive Upgrades guide.

Farm blueprint unlocks separately
For technology blueprints, collect Salvaged Frigate Modules rather than Salvaged Fleet Units. The NMS Wiki Team’s Freighter Guide, updated September 1, 2026, lists crashed freighters, derelict freighters, Nexus missions, frigate expeditions, and NPC freighter cargo pods as sources. Attacking cargo pods can attract Sentinels and reduce standing, so weigh that route’s costs against the alternatives. Spend the modules at the freighter bridge’s Upgrade Control terminal.
Check repeat-farming claims against the current build
Hello Games’ Cosmos 7.05 notes, published September 30, 2026, report fixes for regional derelict freighters sharing a name and for freighters not being correctly marked complete. They do not state whether a completed derelict can still be repeated for upgrades, nor do they establish that any system is one-time-only. An October 2026 Reddit discussion reports changed repeatability and coordinate-list behavior, but that is anecdotal, not an official rule.

Before planning repeated runs or travelling to an old coordinate, verify in your current game build that the derelict is available and check the reward it offers. Avoid relying on older coordinate lists or treating claims about repeat visits as guaranteed. The current sources do not establish a universal repeatability rule.

- Reward target: choose between an installed Salvaged Fleet Unit, a Cargo Bulkhead, or blueprint-unlocking Salvaged Frigate Modules.
- Receiver access: account for the Emergency Broadcast Receiver’s source and availability, including Helios’s weekly free receiver.
- Run conditions: consider the derelict’s layout and hazards, along with the time and resources a run requires.
- Repeat confidence: confirm that the current build lets you revisit the derelict before investing in a repeat route.
No reliable source establishes an upgrade drop rate, expected upgrades per hour, or time-to-upgrade figure. A precise farming-speed comparison would therefore be misleading.
