On a Java server, stop the server and edit ops.json. On a Bedrock Dedicated Server, edit permissions.json with the player’s XUID. On Bedrock Realms, use the Realms member-management screen. Java Realms has a similar player configuration control, although its exact labels and permission levels should be checked in the current interface.

Every method requires authority outside the ordinary player role: server-folder access, a hosting-panel file manager, or Realm-owner access. Operator status grants broad control, so confirm the player’s identity and make a backup before changing anything.

Choose the method that matches your Minecraft setup
The word “operator” covers different storage systems. Editing the wrong file, using a gamertag where an account identifier is required, or changing a running server can leave the player without permissions or cause your edit to be overwritten.

What to check before granting operator status
Confirm the edition and hosting model
Java Edition servers use ops.json. Bedrock Dedicated Server uses permissions.json. A single-player world opened to friends is not the same as either type of dedicated server, and a Realm does not expose its files for ordinary member editing. If you cannot reach the server folder or Realm settings, you cannot complete the file-based method yourself.

Make a backup while the server is stopped
Copy the relevant file before editing it. Keep the original filename and make a separate backup copy rather than pasting a second version over the live file. Stop a Java or Bedrock server first: a running process may rewrite its permissions file when it shuts down, erasing an edit made while it was online.
Use the right account identifier
- Java requires the player’s UUID. The name is stored as a readable label, but the UUID is the identity used by the server.
- Bedrock Dedicated Server requires the player’s XUID. A gamertag alone is not a valid substitute.
- Realms lets you choose the account from the members list, so you do not manually enter either identifier.
Decide whether the player really needs operator privileges
Operator status enables operator commands, world settings, teleportation and all permissions available to ordinary members. It is not a narrow “building” or “moderator” role. If the player only needs to build, keep the account at the normal member level. The Bedrock setup guidance specifically recommends caution and allows a server owner to make new players Visitors by default through default-player-permission-level in server.properties.

Java Edition: edit ops.json without typing a command
This procedure applies to a self-hosted Java server and to a managed server where you have a file manager. It does not apply to a Java Realm, whose files are not exposed in the same way.
1. Stop the Java server cleanly
- Use the server host’s stop control or shut down the process from the server console.
- Wait until the process has fully stopped and the server folder is no longer being written.
Editing first and stopping afterward is risky because the shutdown process can restore the previous operator list.
2. Open the server’s ops.json file
In a self-hosted installation, the file is in the main server directory, alongside the world folder and server configuration files. On a hosting panel, open the panel’s file manager and navigate to the server’s root directory. Download a copy before making changes if the panel supports downloads.

3. Find the player’s UUID
Obtain the UUID belonging to the player’s Java account. A UUID lookup service can help when you know the exact account name, but check the result carefully: a misspelled name or a similarly named account produces a different identity. If the player has changed names, the UUID remains the important value.

Add one object to the JSON array in ops.json. The entry needs the player’s uuid, the current name, and a numeric level. Preserve valid JSON punctuation: entries are separated by commas, and the final entry must not have a trailing comma.

Level 1 is much narrower: it bypasses spawn protection but does not provide the ordinary command access people usually mean by “op.” Do not choose level 1 if your goal is routine administration. The file’s existing formatting is a useful guide; change only the new player’s object and leave other operators intact.
5. Save, validate and restart
- Save the file as plain text, retaining the exact filename
ops.json. - Check that the JSON remains a single valid array and that every string uses matching quotation marks.
- Start the server again through the normal launcher or hosting-panel control.
- Have the player disconnect and reconnect if their session was still open while the server restarted.
If the server refuses to start after the edit, restore the backup immediately. The usual causes are a missing comma, an extra comma, a misplaced brace or an accidental change to an existing entry.
Bedrock Dedicated Server: edit permissions.json
Bedrock’s file method is similar in principle but uses a different identifier and file. The player must be represented by an XUID, and online mode must be enabled so the server can verify the account.

1. Confirm online authentication
Use the server’s configuration to confirm that online mode is enabled. Without online account verification, an XUID-based permission entry may not resolve to the connecting player.
2. Stop the server or pause file writes
Stopping the server is the safest command-free approach. If your panel offers a documented maintenance mode that prevents the file from being rewritten, use that instead. Always retain a backup of the original permissions.json.
3. Identify the player’s XUID
Do not copy the gamertag into the identity field. Bedrock Dedicated Server keys the permission entry to the player’s XUID. Gamertags can contain spaces and can change; the XUID is the account identifier the server expects.
4. Set the permission level to operator
Open permissions.json and add or update the object for that XUID so its permission value is operator. Keep all unrelated entries and preserve the file’s existing JSON structure. A duplicate entry for the same XUID can make troubleshooting harder, so update an existing record rather than creating competing records.
5. Apply the change without typing a command
Restart the Bedrock server after saving. This is the reliable no-command option. Bedrock Dedicated Server also supports a console permission reload, documented as permission reload without a leading slash; use it only if you are comfortable with console administration and want the change to apply without a restart. A gamertag containing spaces may need quotation marks when entered in that console.

6. Reconnect and verify
Ask the player to leave and rejoin after the restart or reload. If the account still behaves as a member, recheck the XUID, confirm that online mode is enabled, and make sure the edited file belongs to the server instance that is actually running. Hosting panels sometimes expose multiple folders for different worlds or installations.
Bedrock Realms: use the member-management screen
Bedrock Realms is the clearest way to grant operator status without touching a file. You need to be the Realm owner or have the account role that can manage members.

- Select the Realm’s configuration or management control rather than the play button.
- Open Manage Members (the wording can vary slightly by client version).
- Find the player in the member list.
- Change that player’s role to Operator and confirm the change.
- Return to the Realm and have the player reconnect if they were already online.
The menu-based role change does not require you to know an XUID or UUID, and there is no server restart to perform. Because the exact labels come from the current Realms interface rather than a consistently documented official page, use the role shown in your client and do not infer a permission level from an old screenshot or guide.

Third-party instructions describe a Java Realms path that goes through the Realm configuration screen, then Players, the selected player, and an operator button. If that control is present in your client, it is the no-command method: select the account and apply the operator role.
Permission-level descriptions for Java Realms conflict across published guides. One commonly repeated summary assigns Realm owners a different level from ordinary operators, but the exact level behavior should be confirmed in the current game interface rather than copied from an older article. If your Java Realms screen does not show an operator control, the file-based ops.json procedure is not available to a normal Realm member; only the owner-facing controls in the client can change roles.

How to verify the change safely
Verification should confirm the intended account without handing out more access than necessary.

- Ask the recipient to reconnect so the new permissions are loaded into their session.
- Use a harmless operator-only task appropriate to your world, then undo any temporary change.
- For file methods, reopen the file after the server starts and confirm that the entry was retained.
Do not use a second account as a test by granting it operator status. That creates another privileged account to revoke later and can obscure which identifier was wrong.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The player is still a member after a Java file edit
- Confirm that the UUID belongs to the intended Java account, not merely to a similarly named player.
- Check that the entry’s level is at least 2 if you expect normal administrative abilities.
- Make sure the server was stopped before editing and restarted afterward.
- Verify that you edited the active server folder, especially when a hosting panel lists several instances.
- Check JSON punctuation and restore the backup if the server rewrote or rejected the file.
The Bedrock entry has no effect
- Replace the gamertag with the player’s XUID.
- Confirm online mode is enabled.
- Ensure the permission value is exactly
operatorand that the XUID is not duplicated elsewhere in the file. - Restart the server if you did not perform a permissions reload.
- Have the player reconnect after the permission change has loaded.
The Realm menu does not show the option
- Confirm that you are signed into the Realm-owner account.
- Open the Realm’s configuration screen, not the ordinary world pause menu.
- Update the game client if the member-management interface is missing or substantially different from current instructions.
- Do not assume that a Java Realms guide applies to Bedrock Realms, or vice versa.
The server will not start after editing
Restore the untouched backup, start the server, and then repeat the edit more carefully. A malformed JSON file is more likely than a Minecraft permission bug when startup fails immediately after a manual change. Edit one account at a time so you can identify the exact change that caused the problem.
Reducing risk after someone becomes an operator
Operator status is effectively full administrative access for the relevant world or server. The recipient can alter world settings, teleport players, use operator commands and affect other members. Give it only to people you trust with those consequences.
- Keep a recent world backup before granting access.
- Use level 2 on Java when that is sufficient; do not raise the level simply because a higher number exists.
- Set Bedrock’s default new-player permission to Visitor or Member according to your community’s needs instead of making every new account an operator.
- Record who was granted access and why, particularly on a shared server.
- Remove the entry when the collaboration ends: delete or demote the Java record, change the Bedrock permission value, or return the Realm member to the ordinary role.
Removing operator status without commands
Java server
Stop the server, remove the player’s object from ops.json or change it to the appropriate lower role, save the valid JSON, and restart. Keep the backup until you confirm that the player has lost operator permissions.
Bedrock Dedicated Server
Stop the server, remove the player’s XUID entry from permissions.json or change its permission value to the intended lower role, then restart. If your administration policy allows a console reload, the same permissions reload mechanism can apply the change without a restart.
Realms
Open the same member-management screen, select the player and choose the normal member or visitor role. Have the player reconnect so the downgraded role is reflected in the session.
The practical answer
For a Java server, the dependable command-free route is a stopped-server edit to ops.json using the player’s UUID and normally level 2. For Bedrock Dedicated Server, use permissions.json with the XUID and restart if you do not want to use a console reload. For Bedrock Realms, change the role in Manage Members. Java Realms may expose a comparable operator button, but its current labels and levels should be verified in the client. In every case, back up first, grant the minimum role that solves the problem, and treat operator status as full administrative access.
