To make suspicious stew, place one red mushroom, one brown mushroom, one bowl, and one flower in a crafting grid. The flower determines the stew’s status effect, so the recipe is only half the decision: your flower choice decides whether the bowl provides Saturation, Regeneration, Night Vision, or a harmful effect.

Java Edition and Bedrock Edition use the same ingredient combination and flower mapping, but effect durations differ. The complete durations are listed below by edition.

What suspicious stew does

Suspicious stew is a consumable food whose effect is controlled by the flower used to craft it. Unlike a fixed-effect potion or an ordinary food, it does not have one universal result. Replacing the flower changes the status effect while leaving the mushrooms and bowl unchanged.

The finished item restores 6 hunger points and provides 7.2 saturation. Its maximum stack size is 1, so every suspicious stew occupies its own inventory slot. In Bedrock Edition, consuming the stew leaves a bowl in the player’s inventory according to the item definition.

There is an important handling problem: an already-made suspicious stew does not visibly tell you which flower effect it contains. A chest full of identical-looking bowls can therefore contain healing, utility, or dangerous effects. Keep flower-specific batches in separate containers, or label the container with the flower and effect before storing the stew.

Ingredients and recipe

Ingredient Quantity Role
Red mushroom 1 Required mushroom ingredient
Brown mushroom 1 Required mushroom ingredient
Bowl 1 Holds the finished stew
Any flower 1 Determines the status effect

The recipe is shapeless: the four ingredients can be placed in any arrangement in the available crafting grid. You must still include exactly one flower, because the flower is what selects the effect.

Crafting steps

  1. Open a crafting grid.
  2. Place one red mushroom, one brown mushroom, one bowl, and your chosen flower into the grid.
  3. Take the suspicious stew from the output slot.
  4. Store it separately from other flower variants if you need to identify its effect later.

If no output appears, check the ingredients first. The most common mistake is using two mushrooms but forgetting the bowl or the flower. A flower is not a decorative extra in this recipe; it is a required ingredient and the effect selector.

Every suspicious-stew flower and its effect

The following durations are in seconds. The effects table was updated on September 25, 2026, so check the game version when exact timing matters. Java and Bedrock share the same broad mapping, but Bedrock durations are shorter for every listed effect.

Minecraft: Switch Edition
  • Explore randomly-generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
  • Play in Creative Mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armour to fend off the dangerous mobs
Flower Effect Type Java duration Bedrock duration
Allium Fire Resistance Utility 4 seconds 2 seconds
Azure Bluet Blindness Harmful 8 seconds 6 seconds
Blue Orchid Saturation Beneficial 0.35 seconds 0.3 seconds
Dandelion Saturation Beneficial 0.35 seconds 0.3 seconds
Cornflower Jump Boost Utility 6 seconds 4 seconds
Lily of the Valley Poison Harmful 12 seconds 10 seconds
Oxeye Daisy Regeneration Beneficial 8 seconds 6 seconds
Poppy Regeneration Beneficial 8 seconds 6 seconds
Torchflower Night Vision Utility 5 seconds 4 seconds
Tulips Weakness Harmful 9 seconds 7 seconds
Wither Rose Wither Harmful 8 seconds 6 seconds

“Tulips” covers the tulip flowers used by the recipe; whichever tulip you use produces Weakness. Blue Orchid and Dandelion produce the same Saturation result, while Oxeye Daisy and Poppy both produce Regeneration.

Which flower should you use?

For a useful survival food: Blue Orchid or Dandelion

Blue Orchid and Dandelion are the safest general-purpose recommendations when you want suspicious stew to help with food management. Both produce Saturation rather than a combat or movement effect. The effect duration is extremely short, but the stew still has its normal food value of 6 hunger points and 7.2 saturation. Choose whichever of the two flowers is easier for you to obtain in your current area.

For emergency healing: Oxeye Daisy or Poppy

Use an Oxeye Daisy or Poppy when the purpose of the stew is emergency recovery. Both flowers produce Regeneration. Make these stews in a clearly separated batch: because the finished bowls look alike, accidentally eating a different flower variant can waste the recovery opportunity or apply a harmful effect instead.

For a short utility effect

  • Allium: Fire Resistance for a brief period.
  • Cornflower: Jump Boost for a short movement window.
  • Torchflower: Night Vision for temporary visibility in darkness.

These effects are situational. Craft them when you already know the task you are preparing for, and keep the flower identity recorded with the finished stew.

Flowers to avoid unless you deliberately want the drawback

  • Azure Bluet causes Blindness.
  • Lily of the Valley causes Poison.
  • Tulips cause Weakness.
  • Wither Rose causes Wither.

Do not use these flowers in a survival-food batch by accident. The flower must be selected deliberately, especially when crafting quickly from a mixed chest of plants.

How to make a known-effect batch safely

  1. Choose the goal first. Decide whether you need food, Regeneration, Fire Resistance, Jump Boost, or Night Vision. This prevents a convenient but unsuitable flower from being used automatically.
  2. Collect one flower type for the whole batch. Mixing flowers during crafting is a reliable way to lose track of which bowl has which effect. One flower type per storage area makes identification easier.
  3. Prepare the mushrooms and bowls. Each stew needs one red mushroom, one brown mushroom, and one bowl, so a production batch needs one of each item per finished bowl.
  4. Craft the stew. Add the two mushrooms, one bowl, and the selected flower to the crafting grid in any arrangement.
  5. Separate and label the output. Suspicious stew cannot stack, and its appearance does not reveal the effect. Put each variant in a dedicated chest, barrel, or other clearly marked location.
  6. Test timing in your edition before relying on it. The Java and Bedrock values differ, and the effect table is update-sensitive. Use the edition-specific duration table rather than assuming a Java timing applies to Bedrock.

Getting suspicious stew from a brown mooshroom

A brown mooshroom provides an alternative to crafting. Feed the brown mooshroom the flower whose effect you want, then use a bowl to milk it. The resulting suspicious stew corresponds to the flower you fed it.

Brown-mooshroom procedure

  1. Find a brown mooshroom.
  2. Hold the flower associated with the desired effect.
  3. Feed that flower to the brown mooshroom.
  4. Use an empty bowl on the mooshroom to obtain the corresponding suspicious stew.
  5. Store the bowl with other stews made from the same flower, because the item itself does not visibly identify its effect.

This method is useful when you have access to a brown mooshroom but do not want to assemble the mushroom-and-bowl recipe each time. It does not remove the need to choose the flower carefully: feeding a harmful-effect flower still produces the corresponding harmful stew.

Other ways to obtain suspicious stew

Structure loot

Suspicious stew can appear in loot from shipwrecks and desert wells. Loot is convenient because it requires no immediate mushroom, bowl, or flower gathering. The trade-off is control: a found stew is already made, and its effect is not visibly communicated by the item. Treat unknown bowls as unidentified until you have a safe reason to consume them, and do not combine them with a labeled batch.

Expert farmer villager

An expert farmer villager can sell suspicious stew for one emerald. This gives you a direct purchase option when emeralds and the appropriate villager trade are available. Purchased stew still has the same identification problem as loot: the finished item does not display its flower effect, so keep it separate from known-effect bowls.

Java Edition and Bedrock Edition differences

The recipe and the flower-to-effect mapping are broadly the same in both editions. The difference that matters most during play is duration: every effect in the table has a Java value and a shorter Bedrock value. For example, Regeneration from an Oxeye Daisy or Poppy lasts 8 seconds in Java and 6 seconds in Bedrock, while Fire Resistance from an Allium lasts 4 seconds in Java and 2 seconds in Bedrock.

Use the table’s edition labels when planning a timed action. A short effect such as Saturation is listed in fractions of a second, whereas the combat and utility effects last several seconds. Exact values can change with later game updates, so verify the version if you are writing a guide, making a timed challenge, or coordinating a multiplayer plan.

Nutrition, inventory, and storage rules

Food value

Every suspicious stew provides 6 hunger points and 7.2 saturation, regardless of which flower supplied the effect. The flower changes the status effect, not the listed food value.

One bowl per inventory slot

The maximum stack size is 1. You cannot compress several suspicious stews into one stack, even when they were made with the same flower. Plan storage space before crafting a large supply, and avoid carrying many variants in a tightly packed hotbar.

Returned bowl in Bedrock

In Bedrock Edition, the item definition leaves a bowl after the stew is consumed. Keep an empty slot available if you are eating several bowls in succession, or be prepared for the returned bowl to enter another inventory location.

Troubleshooting common mistakes

The recipe produces no stew

  • Confirm that both a red mushroom and a brown mushroom are present.
  • Confirm that a bowl is included.
  • Confirm that one flower is included.
  • Check that you are using a crafting grid rather than attempting to combine the ingredients in another inventory action.

The stew has the wrong effect

The flower determines the result. Review the flower used in that bowl against the effects table. If you need Regeneration, use an Oxeye Daisy or Poppy; if you need Saturation, use a Blue Orchid or Dandelion. Do not assume that all white, yellow, or red flowers behave alike.

You ate a harmful stew by mistake

Azure Bluet, Lily of the Valley, tulips, and Wither Rose produce harmful effects. Separate those flowers from food-making supplies, and label finished bowls immediately. For found or purchased stew, remember that the item does not visibly identify its effect; avoid consuming an unknown bowl when the consequences matter.

The effect ends sooner than expected

Check the edition before checking the recipe. Bedrock durations are shorter than Java durations for the same flower, so a timing that is correct in Java can overstate the available window in Bedrock.

A practical suspicious-stew loadout

For ordinary survival play, make one clearly labeled batch with Blue Orchid or Dandelion for the Saturation effect and a separate batch with Oxeye Daisy or Poppy for Regeneration. Keep utility stews made with Allium, Cornflower, or Torchflower in their own container for the specific task that needs them. Avoid placing harmful-effect flowers in the same chest section as food flowers.

If you obtain unidentified bowls from a shipwreck, desert well, or expert farmer villager, store them apart from your known batches. If you rely on a brown mooshroom, feed it only the flower you intend to use, then keep the resulting bowls with the matching labeled supply. This organization matters more than the crafting arrangement because every finished suspicious stew looks alike and cannot stack.
