What a password actually makes private
A DayZ join password limits connection attempts to people who know the password. It is a shared gate at the server connection stage: players enter the same secret when they join, and you can give that secret only to your group.
This is narrower than a whitelist, ban system, or administrator account. A shared password does not identify which individual used it, provide per-player permissions, or replace bans. It also does not grant administrative access. DayZ treats the player join password, the server-admin password, and BattlEye remote-console credentials as separate settings.

- Use a join password when a small community can safely share one secret and needs a quick access barrier.
- Use additional access controls when you need individual allowlists, player-specific revocation, bans, or remote administration. Document and configure those controls separately.
Prepare before changing the setting
You need administrative access to the PC server files or to the hosting provider’s control panel. Identify who will receive the new secret, choose a passphrase that is not reused elsewhere, and decide when a restart will be least disruptive. If you are editing files directly, make a backup copy of the active configuration before changing it. That gives you a known version to restore if a typo prevents the service from starting.
Keep the passphrase out of public screenshots, livestream overlays, issue reports, support tickets, and logs. A tutorial example can use placeholder text, but a real server secret should be shared only through a trusted private channel. If a password is later exposed, changing it and redistributing the replacement is more reliable than trying to determine exactly who copied it.
PC self-hosted setup: set the password value
The official DayZ configuration reference defines password as the password required to connect to the server. The important detail is that the active configuration filename is not universal: the server starts with a -config launch parameter that points to the file it reads. serverDZ.cfg is a common filename, but editing a different file will have no effect.
1. Identify the configuration file selected by -config
Inspect the command, script, shortcut, service definition, or host panel that launches your dedicated server. Find the argument that begins with -config and note the path that follows it. Open that exact file. Do not assume that a file called serverDZ.cfg is active merely because it exists in the server directory.
If a launcher or service hides the command line, use its documented startup settings or configuration page to see the selected path. A managed host may show the same file through a web editor rather than on your local disk.
2. Edit the player join-password line
Open the active file in a plain-text editor and locate the password entry. Replace an empty value with a long, unique passphrase:
password = "Use-a-long-unique-passphrase";Keep the quotation marks and semicolon in the configuration syntax. Replace the example text with your own secret; never publish a real password in a screenshot, tutorial, log, issue report, or public chat.
Do not create a second password line elsewhere in the file. Edit the existing setting so there is one unambiguous value for the server to read. Avoid changing neighboring settings while making this access-control change.
3. Keep administrator credentials separate
The same configuration normally contains a distinct passwordAdmin setting. It is used to become a server administrator, not to let ordinary players join:

Giving players the admin value defeats the separation between joining and administering the server. If the admin credential has ever been posted with the join password, rotate it independently.

Save the file without changing its syntax or extension. Then follow the restart, reload, or apply procedure documented for your server setup. The available references do not establish one universal hot-reload behavior, so do not assume that a running process will read the new password immediately. A controlled restart is the dependable way to ensure the process opens the edited file.
Watch the service status after restarting. If the process fails to start, stop it, restore the backup, and compare the edited line for missing quotation marks, a missing semicolon, or an accidental change to another setting. Once the process is running normally, perform the connection checks below.
5. Verify both allowed and refused access
Attempt to join with the new password from a client that is allowed to connect. Then attempt a connection without the password, or with an incorrect one, using an account that should not have access. The expected result is that only the connection supplying the correct join password succeeds. Do not describe a test as completed unless you actually perform it on your server.
Test after the restart rather than immediately after saving the text file. If a client still joins without a password, confirm that you restarted the correct instance and that its startup command points to the file you edited. Multiple server installations or launch profiles can make an inactive copy look authoritative.

Do not confuse the three DayZ credentials
Most accidental exposure comes from editing the right-looking line for the wrong purpose. These credentials have different jobs and, in the case of BattlEye RCon, live in a different configuration area.

Putting RConPassword in the main DayZ configuration will not set the player join password. Conversely, changing passwordAdmin will not create the normal connection gate. Treat every credential as independently sensitive and rotate a credential if it has been shared beyond its intended audience.

Managed PC hosting: use the provider’s editor
Managed DayZ hosts generally expose the same underlying value through a control panel. A Host Havoc configuration guide, for example, directs customers to the DayZ server configuration-file editor and explains that adding a join password restricts access to players who know it.
- Open the control panel for the DayZ instance.
- Choose the server configuration or configuration-file editor, not an administrator-password or BattlEye-RCon field.
- Find the player join-password setting, enter a unique passphrase, and save the change.
- Use the panel’s documented apply or restart control.
- Test a permitted connection and a connection using no password or the wrong password.
Panel labels, button names, and restart behavior can change. If the editor presents both a join password and an admin password, select the join-password field for player access. If the panel offers only a raw file editor, make the same password = "..."; change shown for self-hosting and confirm that the editor is modifying the file used by the server’s startup configuration.
Managed hosting can be useful when you do not want to maintain the server process, updates, backups, and recovery yourself. It does not remove the need to protect credentials or to verify that a saved setting was actually applied. Prices, regions, plan limits, and console availability are provider-specific and can change, so check the provider’s current product page before committing.
Console servers: private access is managed by the host
On console, DayZ private servers are rented rather than installed as a local dedicated-server process. Bohemia Interactive’s private-console FAQ identifies Nitrado as the provider through which players can rent and administer private DayZ servers, and states that access can be controlled by setting a password.
The practical workflow is therefore provider-specific: rent or open the console server, enter the provider’s server-settings or access-control panel, set the join password, save it, and use the provider’s restart or apply action. The current interface, regional availability, pricing, and account requirements are subject to change and should be checked in the provider’s current documentation before purchase or setup.
Do not expect a console client to expose the PC launch parameter or local serverDZ.cfg file. Those are PC dedicated-server concepts; on console, the hosting provider supplies the administrative interface. If the panel has separate fields for player access and administrator access, use the player-access field for the shared join secret.

A password is easy to distribute but coarse-grained. Everyone who knows it has the same initial ability to attempt a connection, and revoking one person normally means changing the shared secret and sending the new one to everyone else. A whitelist is designed around individual identities, so it can provide finer revocation when the server platform and host support that control.

If your requirement is simply “friends should know the server secret,” use password. If the requirement is “only these named accounts may connect, and I need to remove one account without disrupting the rest,” a password alone is not sufficient.

Common mistakes and precise fixes
You edited passwordAdmin instead of password
Symptom: Players still join without being prompted for the secret, or the value only affects administrative commands. Fix: Edit the line named exactly password in the active DayZ configuration. Leave passwordAdmin for administrators.
You changed the wrong file
Symptom: The file shows the new value, but the running server behaves as before. Fix: Recheck the startup command’s -config path and edit that file. A common filename is not proof that it is the file the process reads.
You forgot to save or restart
Symptom: A reconnect does not request the new password. Fix: Confirm that the editor saved the file, then carry out the documented restart or apply operation. Do not rely on an assumed live reload.
You put the RCon password in the join-password field
Symptom: Remote administration settings work differently than expected, or players are given an administrative secret. Fix: Keep BattlEye’s RConPassword in its BattlEye configuration and use the DayZ password field for player access.

The password was exposed
Symptom: Unwanted players continue appearing after the secret was shared. Fix: Change the join password, save it, apply the change, and distribute the replacement only through a trusted channel. Also review whether admin or RCon credentials appeared in the same message, screenshot, log, or support request and rotate those separately if necessary.
You expect a password to provide a full whitelist
Symptom: You need to remove one person while preserving access for everyone else, or you need player-specific permissions. Fix: Keep the join password for the broad gate if useful, but configure the platform’s supported allowlist, ban, or identity controls separately. A shared password cannot provide that granularity by itself.
