How to Make Your Own Custom Game in Fortnite

A practical guide to making a custom Fortnite game: choose Creative or UEFN, build and test the island, invite playtesters, and publish through Creator Portal.

To make a custom Fortnite game, create an island in Fortnite Creative or build one in Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN). Set its rules and player interactions, build and test a complete game loop, then either share it privately for feedback or submit it for publication through Creator Portal. You can start building without publishing, but Epic’s UEFN publishing documentation says creators must be at least 18 to publish a project.

Choose Fortnite Creative or UEFN

Both routes let you create an island and configure its gameplay through Island Settings. The main difference is where you work: Creative is Fortnite’s in-game creation environment, while UEFN is an editor workflow that launches a session in Fortnite for testing. Epic documents different workflows, not one universally better choice.

Workflow Where you build and configure Testing and release path
Fortnite Creative Build in Fortnite and use Island Settings to define the game mode and player interactions. You can copy a private code for playtesting. To publish, start with Publish Island and complete the Creator Portal release process.
UEFN Build in Unreal Editor for Fortnite; Island Settings are also available here, though defaults may differ from Creative. Launch a session to test the project in Fortnite. Start publishing from UEFN, then complete release preparation and submission in Creator Portal.

For the in-game workflow, see Epic’s Island Settings guide. For editor-based creation, see UEFN playtesting.

Plan a small, playable game

Before decorating, decide what a player should do and how a round works. A simple first version is easier to test as a complete experience than a large map with unfinished rules.

  • 3-Way Trigger Locks – Set the travel distance of the triggers with three different positions to pull off quicker actions in your favorite FPS games or go full throttle in a high-end race car
  • Write down the objective: what counts as winning, losing, or completing the game?
  • Decide how players enter, how the round begins, and what ends it.
  • Work out how players interact with the environment and each other.

Use Island Settings and relevant devices to implement the mode and interactions. Exact controls and interface details can differ between Creative and UEFN, so follow the documentation for the workflow you chose.

Build, test, and refine the island

  1. Create the island in Creative or start a project in UEFN.
  2. Set the rules in Island Settings, then configure the devices needed to make the objective and round flow work.
  3. Build the playable space around those rules. Get the core game loop working before spending time on decorative polish.
  4. Test the experience from beginning to end. In UEFN, launch a session and play in Fortnite. Check that props are visible, collisions behave as intended, devices work with their configured settings, and the game flow reaches a proper ending.
  5. Fix problems and test again. Epic describes UEFN playtesting as a necessary step before publishing. Treat a successful start as only one part of the test: verify what players see and do throughout a full game.

Epic’s UEFN playtesting guide covers launching and checking a session.

Invite collaborators or playtesters

Let other players edit in Creative

Creative island editing permissions are Private by default, which restricts editing to the owner. Set permissions to Public if players entering through the owner’s personal rift should be able to edit. Choose deliberately: this controls who can change the island, not just who can play it. See Epic’s permissions documentation.

Share a private code or organize a playtest

For a straightforward private test, use the Overview and Tools settings in Creative to copy a private code. Epic says this can be used even if you are not enrolled in the Creator Portal program; consult its Overview and Tools guide for the current workflow.

The documented group limit is 50 playtesters; the source page does not state a publication year. See Adding Playtesters in Fortnite Creative.

Publish the game through Creator Portal

Making and testing an island is separate from releasing it publicly. Publication begins in Creative or UEFN and continues in Creator Portal, where you prepare the release and submit it for moderation.
