Your website becomes live on the new server when the DNS records that serve the site point to the new infrastructure and the new copy is ready to handle real visitors. Do the preparation and private testing first, lower DNS TTL in advance, keep the old server running, then change DNS and validate the result from outside both servers.
Need a server to try this on? Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with NVMe storage, full root access and a 14-day free trial.
A hosting-only move should not change your URLs. If the domain, protocol, hostname, or paths also change, treat that as a URL migration: build a complete redirect map, update canonical and internal links, submit the new sitemap, and monitor indexing separately.

What actually makes the site live
Uploading files to a second machine does not move public traffic. The cutover occurs when the DNS records used by the website resolve to the new hosting infrastructure. Depending on how the site is configured, that may mean changing A or AAAA records, a CNAME, or the domain’s authoritative nameservers.
DNS caching means the change is not observed everywhere at the same instant. Some visitors, crawlers, mail systems, and monitoring services can continue using the old answer until their cached record expires. This is why the old server must remain functional while the new one is being reached by increasing portions of the internet.

There are two distinct projects to keep separate:
| Move type | What changes | Additional SEO work |
|---|---|---|
| Infrastructure-only move | The same domain and URL paths are served from a different server or provider. | Validate DNS, TLS, redirects, crawling, indexing, forms, accounts, and transactions. Existing URLs should continue to resolve. |
| URL move | The domain, subdomain, HTTP/HTTPS protocol, hostname, or path structure changes as well as the server. | Create an old-to-new URL map, issue direct 301 or 308 redirects, update canonicals and internal links, revise robots rules and XML sitemaps, and use the applicable Search Console tools. |
Small and medium sites can usually switch together after testing. A large site may move sections in stages so a problem can be isolated without affecting every URL at once.
Prepare the new server before touching DNS
Build the replacement as a production environment, not merely as a file dump. Keep the old server online and treat it as the rollback target until monitoring shows that the move is complete.
Copy the application and its data
- Upload the complete document root, including hidden configuration files and user-uploaded assets.
- Import the production database and confirm character sets, database versions, extensions, collation, and connection credentials.
- Recreate the required runtime versions, modules, libraries, environment variables, cache services, queues, and worker processes.
- Copy persistent storage such as media, downloads, generated files, and private upload directories. Confirm that paths are writable only where the application requires it.
- Recreate scheduled jobs, background workers, webhooks, API credentials, payment or shipping integrations, and any allowlists that reference the old server address.
Configure the domain and transport security
- Add every production hostname, including the apex domain, the preferred www or non-www version, API endpoints, and any subdomains that are moving.
- Install a valid TLS certificate for every HTTPS hostname. Check the certificate chain, renewal mechanism, supported protocol settings, and the redirect from HTTP to the chosen HTTPS URL.
- Set the intended canonical host and confirm that redirects do not loop between www and non-www or between HTTP and HTTPS.
- Recreate security headers, upload limits, body-size limits, compression, caching, and server-level rewrites that the old host supplied.
- Keep email dependencies in mind. Website DNS and mail DNS are separate, so do not overwrite MX, SPF, DKIM, or DMARC records when changing web records. Confirm that contact forms and transactional mail still use an authorized sender.
Match capacity and permissions
Compare CPU, memory, storage, database limits, connection limits, and bandwidth with the site’s real workload. A migration can cause a temporary increase in crawling, so an undersized replacement may fail precisely when search engines are checking more URLs.
Use the same ownership and permission model the application expects. Files that are too restrictive produce missing images, failed uploads, or server errors; files that are too permissive create a security problem. Review firewall, web application firewall, rate-limit, and denial-of-service settings so ordinary visitors and legitimate crawlers can reach DNS and the web server.
Create a private test copy
Test before public DNS is changed. Google recommends either an IP-restricted staging site or a temporary hostname. An IP restriction is usually safer because the copy is not publicly discoverable. A temporary hostname is convenient for distributed teams, but it needs explicit indexing protection.
Protect the staging environment from indexing
- Require authentication or restrict access by source IP whenever possible.
- Use a migration-only
noindexdirective and restrictive robots rules on the test copy. - Do not place the staging hostname in public navigation, XML sitemaps, feeds, advertising, or structured references.
- Keep Search Console verification and production analytics separated so test activity is not mistaken for live traffic.
These controls are temporary. Prepare a launch checklist item that removes the staging noindex and robots blocks at the same time the public DNS change is made. A forgotten block can make a technically healthy site disappear from search.

Test representative user journeys
Do not check only the home page. Select representative URLs from every important template and run the journeys that create or change data:
- Open several articles or product pages, image-heavy pages, downloads, search results, and paginated views.
- Submit contact, registration, and account-recovery forms. Confirm validation messages, confirmation emails, and the destination of stored submissions.
- Log in, log out, change a password, and test role-specific pages.
- Run checkout, subscription, booking, or other transactions in the appropriate test mode. Verify webhooks, receipts, inventory changes, and failure handling.
- Exercise third-party integrations, maps, video embeds, analytics, consent tools, and APIs.
- Check redirects, 404 handling, cache behavior, compression, and response headers over both HTTP and HTTPS.
Compare the test copy with the old site for content, database rows, media, configuration values, and environment variables. A page that renders is not necessarily a complete migration if its form data, scheduled job, or integration is missing.
Preserve verification and crawler access
Search Console verification often depends on a file, HTML tag, DNS record, or a provider-specific setting. Confirm that the chosen verification method will still be present after the new server answers requests. If verification is file- or tag-based, copy it to the new document root and test it through the public hostname.
Review network controls before launch. Firewalls and anti-abuse systems must allow legitimate users and search-engine crawlers to resolve DNS and fetch pages. Avoid a rule that permits the old server’s address but blocks the new one. Check both IPv4 and IPv6 if the site publishes A and AAAA records.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Lower DNS TTL before the cutover
A DNS record’s time to live (TTL) controls how long resolvers may cache its answer. Lowering the TTL before the move can shorten the period during which different users reach different servers. Google gives a few hours as an example of a conservative low TTL and recommends making the reduction at least a week before the change when possible.
- Identify every DNS record that directs web traffic and note its current TTL and provider.
- At least a week before the planned switch, reduce the TTL on those web records to a few hours. Keep unrelated mail and verification records unchanged unless they also need to move.
- Wait long enough for the previous, longer TTL to expire from caches. Lowering a TTL today cannot retroactively clear a resolver that cached yesterday’s longer value.
- Record the intended new values and the exact time of the planned change so the team can distinguish an expected cache delay from a configuration error.
TTL does not force every resolver to refresh immediately, and it does not replace validation. It simply limits how long a compliant resolver may retain the old answer after its current cache period ends.

Freeze writes and run the final pre-launch check
Dynamic sites can diverge while the final database and files are being copied. Choose a short maintenance window, enable read-only mode, pause queues, or otherwise account for writes that occur during the final synchronization.
Final checklist
- Take a fresh database backup and a files backup, and verify that each can be restored.
- Compare the production configuration and environment variables between old and new servers, excluding secrets that must be rotated.
- Confirm that the new host has sufficient capacity and that monitoring, log retention, and alerting are enabled.
- Check that scheduled tasks will run once, on the intended host, rather than twice during overlap.
- Confirm the status of payments, email, webhooks, external API allowlists, storage mounts, and background workers.
- Prepare the rollback DNS values and document who can change them.
- Capture a baseline of uptime, response errors, analytics, crawl errors, and important conversion paths on the old server.
For sites that accept orders, registrations, comments, or other important submissions, decide exactly how you will reconcile writes made during the overlap. A simple file copy is not enough when two servers can receive different database changes.
Make the new server public
- Remove the temporary staging
noindexand robots restrictions from the production copy. Keep private access controls on any remaining test hostname. - Change the web-serving DNS records to the new infrastructure. Depending on the architecture, update A or AAAA records, a CNAME, or the authoritative nameservers.
- Leave mail records, verification records, and unrelated services unchanged unless they are part of the documented move.
- Record the exact old and new values, the change time, and the resolver used to confirm the update.
- Keep the old server online and capable of serving the site while caches expire and validation proceeds.
The DNS edit is the hosting cutover. Do not shut down the old host merely because one local lookup returns the new address.
Validate from outside both servers
Testing from the new server itself can hide DNS, firewall, certificate, and routing mistakes. Validate from more than one public network or resolver, including a network that is not managed by the hosting provider.
DNS and TLS checks
- Resolve the apex domain and every moving hostname through multiple public DNS resolvers. Confirm that the answers become the intended new addresses.
- Check both IPv4 and IPv6 paths when both records exist. A broken AAAA record can make the site fail only for some visitors.
- Open representative HTTP and HTTPS URLs. Confirm that HTTP redirects once to the preferred HTTPS URL and that the certificate matches the hostname.
- Check DNS responses from more than one geographic network because caches expire at different times.
Application and SEO checks
- Open the home page, a deep URL, an image, a download, a search result, and a URL that should return a deliberate 404.
- Submit forms and test authentication, account recovery, checkout, subscriptions, or other transactions.
- Inspect response status codes, redirect destinations, canonical elements, robots rules, structured data, and XML sitemaps.
- Review server logs for 4xx and 5xx responses, database errors, permission failures, blocked crawlers, and requests still arriving at the old host.
- Compare analytics and uptime measurements with the baseline, allowing for the normal delay in DNS and reporting systems.
Use command-line tools such as dig or nslookup only as additional evidence; a local resolver may still have a cached answer. The decisive test is whether ordinary external networks can reach the new site correctly.
Handle URL changes as a separate migration
If every URL stays the same, do not add unnecessary redirects or rewrite paths. If URLs change, create a complete mapping before launch. Include old URLs that receive traffic or links even if they are not in the current sitemap.

Build and implement the redirect map
- Export the old URL inventory from the CMS, server logs, analytics, XML sitemaps, and important external links.
- Assign each old URL its closest relevant new destination. Redirect obsolete content to a genuinely equivalent page, not automatically to the home page.
- Implement direct server-side permanent redirects, preferably status 301 or 308. Avoid chains such as old URL to an intermediate URL to the final URL.
- Test mixed cases: trailing slashes, uppercase variants, query parameters, encoded characters, old file extensions, and both HTTP and HTTPS.
- Update canonical links, internal links, hreflang or other structured references, robots rules, navigation, feeds, and XML sitemaps to use the final URLs.
Keep redirects for as long as possible; Google specifically advises keeping them generally at least one year. Longer retention is sensible when old links continue to appear in external sites, bookmarks, or offline material.
Use Search Console for the right kind of move
Verify all relevant old and new properties. Use URL Inspection to check representative destinations, review indexing and coverage reports, and submit the new XML sitemap. Compare crawl errors and indexed pages before and after the move.
Use Change of Address only when the move is to a different domain or subdomain. It is not the correct tool for an HTTP-to-HTTPS change or a move that keeps the same site and changes only paths. Those changes rely on redirects, updated signals, and monitoring.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to expect after launch
DNS caches will clear at different times, so users can temporarily be split between old and new servers. Search engines may also crawl more heavily while they reassess the site. Google says small-to-medium URL migrations commonly take a few weeks for most pages to move, while larger sites can take longer. A short fluctuation in crawl rate is normal after a hosting change.

| Period | What to monitor | Action |
|---|---|---|
| First hours | DNS answers, TLS, uptime, 4xx/5xx errors, forms, logins, transactions, and mail. | Fix configuration or capacity faults immediately; keep the old host serving traffic. |
| First several days | Which host receives requests, analytics, crawler access, cache behavior, and user reports. | Investigate persistent old-host traffic, blocked crawlers, redirect failures, and missing assets. |
| Following weeks | Indexing, crawl errors, canonical selection, sitemap processing, rankings, and conversions. | Repair URL mappings and technical signals; distinguish temporary reassessment from a real outage. |
Compare old and new server logs rather than relying on a single browser test. The old host should show declining traffic while the new host receives normal users and crawlers. Keep both DNS configuration and backups available throughout this observation period.
Rollback and troubleshooting
Some users still see the old site
This is usually DNS caching during the expected transition. Confirm that the new record is correct at multiple public resolvers, keep the old host synchronized and online, and wait through the reduced TTL period. If only one network is affected after a reasonable cache period, inspect that network’s resolver rather than changing records repeatedly.

- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
The new site shows a certificate warning or redirect loop
Check that the certificate includes the exact hostname being requested and that the complete certificate chain is installed. Then trace each HTTP and HTTPS redirect and remove conflicting rules at the web server, proxy, and application layers. Ensure the canonical host decision is consistent everywhere.
Pages return 404 or 500 errors
Compare document-root paths, rewrite rules, database credentials, runtime modules, file permissions, and environment variables. Inspect logs for the first failing request rather than only the browser’s final error. Missing uploads and generated files often indicate that persistent storage was not copied or mounted.

Forms, mail, or integrations fail
Check outbound mail authorization, API credentials, webhook destinations, firewall allowlists, queue workers, scheduled jobs, and provider-side callbacks. Test a complete transaction and confirm the resulting database record, email, and external status—not just the form’s success page.
Search traffic or indexing drops
First rule out accidental noindex, restrictive robots rules, inaccessible DNS, firewall blocks, broken verification files, incorrect canonicals, and redirect chains. For a URL move, inspect the old-to-new map and sitemap, then use Search Console reports to identify patterns. Do not assume a short-term crawl or ranking fluctuation means the hosting move permanently harmed visibility.
When to roll back
Rollback is appropriate when the new host cannot reliably serve critical journeys, data integrity is uncertain, or a security issue cannot be corrected quickly. Restore the documented old DNS values, keep the old site authoritative, preserve logs from both systems, and reconcile any writes made during the overlap. Do not destroy the new environment; correct it and repeat the cutover only after a new private test.
When it is safe to decommission the old server
Do not use a calendar date as the only criterion. Decommission only after external checks and logs show that the move is complete:

- The old host receives no meaningful legitimate traffic, or remaining requests are understood and intentionally handled.
- Users can load representative pages and complete critical journeys over HTTPS.
- Search crawlers can reach the new host, and Search Console shows no unresolved migration-wide indexing or redirect problem.
- Analytics, uptime, error, mail, transaction, and application logs are stable.
- Backups, rollback records, DNS documentation, and required redirects remain available.
For a URL migration, retain the redirect service even after the old application is gone. Removing redirects too soon can strand users and external links and erase a useful signal for search engines.
