To make yourself an administrator on a Squad server, edit SquadGame/ServerConfig/Admins.cfg, define a permission group, assign your numeric SteamID64 to that group, save the file, and restart the server. A minimal working example is:

Admin=12345678901234567:ModThe first line creates the Mod group and grants four access levels. The second maps one SteamID64 to that group. Replace the example number with your own SteamID64 and keep the group name identical on both lines.

- Access to the server’s host panel, file manager, FTP/SFTP account, or another method that can edit configuration files.
- The numeric SteamID64 for the account that should receive administrator rights.
- A maintenance window or permission to stop and restart the server.
Use the account’s numeric SteamID64, not its display name, clan tag, or in-game nickname. The value in Admins.cfg must be the same account that joins the server.
Find and open Admins.cfg
- Stop the server if your host recommends stopping it before configuration changes. If the panel supports safe live editing, open its file manager instead.
- Navigate to
SquadGame/ServerConfig/Admins.cfg. This is the configuration file used for local in-game administrator assignments. - Make a backup copy before changing the file. A backup lets you restore a known-good configuration if a typo prevents the server from loading the intended permissions.
The file normally contains a commented list of available access levels near the top. Read that list before creating a group; permissions are granular, so you can grant only what the role needs.

How the two configuration lines work
The Group= line
A group line follows this format:
Group=<Group Name>:<Permission 1>,<Permission 2>,<Permission 3>For example:
Group=Mod:chat,kick,ban,cameramanMod is an arbitrary label. The comma-separated values after the colon are the access levels granted to every administrator assigned to that group.
The Admin= line
An administrator assignment follows this format:
Admin=<SteamID64>:<Group Name>Example:
Admin=12345678901234567:ModThe group name must match the label in the Group= line exactly. If the group is named Moderator, an assignment ending in :Mod will not use it.
Step-by-step: add yourself as an admin
1. Open the configuration file
In the host panel, stop the server or open the file manager’s configuration directory. Open SquadGame/ServerConfig/Admins.cfg with a plain-text editor. Do not use a word processor that can insert formatting or smart punctuation.
2. Choose the permissions you actually need
Review the commented permission list and select the smallest set that covers your job. A moderator who only handles player misconduct does not need configuration or server-management rights.
3. Define a group
Add a line such as:
Group=Mod:chat,kick,ban,cameramanThis example grants chat administration, kicking, banning, and cameraman access. You can rename Mod, but use the same spelling and capitalization when assigning an account.

4. Assign your SteamID64
Add your numeric identifier on its own line:
Admin=12345678901234567:ModReplace 12345678901234567 with your SteamID64. Do not substitute a player name. If several people need the same rights, add one Admin= line per SteamID64, all pointing to Mod.
5. Save and apply the change
Save the file, then restart the Squad server. A restart is the reliable way to make the new assignment take effect. Some hosting documentation also recommends changing the map as an alternative application step when the panel supports it, but restart if rights do not appear immediately.
6. Test from inside the game
Join the server with the account whose SteamID64 you entered. On an English keyboard, the administration reference says the in-game console opens by double-tapping the tilde key. Run only commands covered by your assigned group and verify that the expected permission is present.
Permission levels and what they allow
The available levels are individual capabilities rather than all-or-nothing administrator tiers. The following descriptions explain the practical effect of the levels documented for Squad administration.

Group=Moderator:chat,kick,banAdd cameraman only if the moderator needs spectator-camera tools. Avoid adding config, manageserver, immune, or cheat merely because the account is trusted.
Map or event administrator
An event operator may need map and team controls:

A senior operator may need configuration and server-management access, but those levels should be isolated from ordinary moderator groups:

Local console administration versus RCON
Editing Admins.cfg grants permissions to an account that joins the server and uses the in-game console. RCON is a separate remote-administration channel configured in Rcon.cfg; enabling one does not replace the other.

There is no universal current-build compatibility matrix for every RCON panel or integration. Check the documentation for the specific tool you intend to use and confirm that it supports your server build.

Open Rcon.cfg
The RCON configuration sits beside Admins.cfg in the server configuration area. Its documented settings include the IP address, port, password, maximum connections, and timeout.

Set a non-empty password
Leaving the RCON password empty keeps RCON turned off. To accept remote connections, set a password and use that same value in the client or hosting panel. Treat the password as a server credential and do not paste it into public chat, screenshots, or shared configuration examples.
Confirm the port
The installation reference identifies port 21114 as a common default. Use the actual port shown in your Rcon.cfg; if you change it, the panel or client must use the new value and the port must be reachable through your host’s firewall or network rules.
Understand the relationship to admin groups
RCON provides a remote command path, while Admins.cfg defines local account roles. Third-party panels may read the RCON password and port from Rcon.cfg and read roles from Admins.cfg. A Discord-connected tool may implement its own permission mapping, so configure and audit that mapping separately.

Troubleshoot missing administrator rights
The console says you are not authorized
- Verify that the assignment begins exactly with
Admin=and contains the numeric SteamID64 followed by a colon and the group name. - Confirm that the
Group=line exists and that its name matches the assignment character for character. - Check that you joined with the same Steam account represented by the SteamID64 in the file.
- Save the file and restart the server before testing again.
You used a player name
A display name is not the identifier consumed by this file. Replace it with the account’s numeric SteamID64, then save and restart.

The file saved but changes are ignored
Check that the editor wrote to the active server’s SquadGame/ServerConfig/Admins.cfg, not a local copy or an inactive instance. Restart the correct server. If your host explicitly supports applying configuration by changing the map, use that option; otherwise perform a full restart.
Only some commands work
That usually means the group is working but does not include the permission required by the command. Add only the missing access level, save, and restart. Do not solve a single missing capability by granting every permission.
RCON will not connect
- Confirm that the RCON password is not empty; an empty password disables RCON.
- Verify that the client or panel uses the same IP, port, and password as
Rcon.cfg. - Check that the configured port is reachable through the host firewall and any network security rules.
- Make sure the panel is connecting to the correct server instance and that the RCON service has been reloaded after configuration changes.
You accidentally granted too much access
Remove unnecessary permissions from the group, save the file, and restart. In particular, review whether cheat, config, manageserver, or immune are genuinely required. If several administrators share that group, changing it affects all of them.
Pre-flight checklist
- The file path is
SquadGame/ServerConfig/Admins.cfg. - Your identifier is a numeric SteamID64, not a display name.
- A
Group=line defines the permissions. - An
Admin=line maps your SteamID64 to the exact group name. - The file is saved as plain text.
- The server has been restarted, or the host-supported map-change application method has been used.
- You tested from the account named in the assignment.
- RCON, if enabled, has a non-empty password and matching connection values in the client or panel.
Sparked Host’s procedure, updated 19 June 2023, follows the same sequence: obtain the Steam64ID, edit Admins.cfg, create a group, assign the account, save, and restart. The server’s own configuration references remain the authority for the permission names available in your installation.
