Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFor a prerecorded YouTube video, export an MP4 using H.264, progressive scan, the source frame rate, and variable bitrate; then lower resolution or bitrate only as far as a sample still looks acceptable. For a live stream, use YouTube’s separate live-encoder settings—typically constant bitrate (CBR)—rather than reusing its upload recommendations. These steps reduce the file you upload or the data sent to YouTube, but they do not establish how a separate cloud archive stores or compresses its copy.
First, identify which file or stream you want to make smaller
“YouTube stream video” can mean a prerecorded video that you upload, a live feed sent from an encoder, or a file you keep in cloud storage. They are related but not interchangeable:
- Prerecorded upload: export a smaller file before uploading it. YouTube’s upload recommendations cover the submitted video’s encoding settings.
- Live stream: configure the encoder that sends video to YouTube. YouTube’s live guidance has its own codec and bitrate recommendations.
- Separate cloud archive: compress the file that you actually store there. The YouTube guidance cited here does not specify how a separate cloud archive handles or compresses files.
YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple viewing formats, but that is for playback delivery and should not be mistaken for a guarantee about your original upload or a separate archive. See YouTube’s live encoder guidance.
Make a prerecorded upload file smaller
Use the right source and export format
- Start with the best original available. Avoid repeatedly exporting an already compressed copy when you can return to the source. This is cautious workflow advice, not a quantified YouTube rule.
- Export MP4 with H.264 and progressive scan. YouTube’s recommended upload settings also specify variable bitrate (VBR), High Profile, 4:2:0 chroma subsampling, and Fast Start placement of the MP4 moov atom. Follow the available equivalents in your encoder; a particular paid app is not required by these recommendations. See YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings.
- Keep the recorded frame rate. YouTube says to encode and upload at the frame rate at which the video was recorded. Common rates include 24, 25, 30, 48, 50, and 60 frames per second. Converting frame rate simply to shrink a file can alter motion, so do not change it without checking the result.
- Choose resolution and bitrate together. Reducing either can reduce output size, but the acceptable setting depends on the footage. YouTube’s SDR figures below are upload recommendations, not a promised file size, compression ratio, or minimum quality threshold.
- Export a short representative sample before the whole video. Check fast movement, fine detail, small text, smooth gradients, and audio. Compare it with the original at the viewing size you care about, then adjust the export if artifacts are distracting. This inspection is practical advice, not a YouTube-prescribed test.

#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Resolution | Standard frame rates (24, 25, 30 fps) | High frame rates (48, 50, 60 fps) |
|---|---|---|
| 720p SDR | 5 Mbps | 7.5 Mbps |
| 1080p SDR | 8 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
For resolutions beyond these examples, consult the full YouTube upload settings table and select the matching resolution, frame-rate class, and SDR or HDR mode. The recommendation rises with resolution and, in these examples, with high frame rate. Your footage may remain acceptable below a reference value or show visible artifacts at it; inspect an export rather than assuming a fixed reduction will work.
Keep color and aspect ratio intact
- For SDR, YouTube recommends BT.709 color space. Preserve correct source color metadata; bitrate changes alone do not fix a color-space mismatch. YouTube notes that unsupported color spaces may be converted.
- Do not add black bars or padding just to force a particular shape. YouTube’s player adapts to the video’s aspect ratio and the viewer’s device; added padding can interfere with dynamic player sizing. See YouTube’s resolution and aspect-ratio guidance.
Configure a live stream separately
A live encoder sends a continuous feed; it is not an upload file. YouTube’s live guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1, up to 60 fps. It recommends CBR and a 2-second keyframe frequency, and says not to exceed 4 seconds. Do not apply the prerecorded-upload VBR table to this workflow.

Live bitrate examples from YouTube
These are YouTube Help live-ingestion recommendations accessed in 2026; the page does not display a publication date. They are for the stated live resolution and frame rate, not estimates of archived-file size.
| Live video setting | H.264 | AV1 or H.265 |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
Use the full YouTube live bitrate table for other resolutions, frame rates, and supported codecs. Choose a setting your connection can sustain, run a speed test, and test with representative motion and audio before an event. Monitor stream health while live. YouTube says it transcodes a live stream into multiple output formats so viewers on different devices and networks can watch; those playback renditions do not tell you the size of a separate cloud archive.

If the goal is a smaller cloud archive
Compress the actual file you intend to retain, using the prerecorded-export workflow above if it is a video file. Check which version your cloud workflow stores: an original, an exported copy, and a live recording are different files and may have different sizes. The YouTube pages cited here explain upload and live settings, but do not establish how another cloud service stores, recompresses, or charges for archived video.

The export is smaller, but looks blocky or blurry
Increase bitrate, restore the original resolution, or test a higher-quality export. Pay particular attention to movement, fine detail, and text, where artifacts can be obvious. There is no universal percentage reduction that preserves quality for every source.

The live stream buffers or loses health
The selected upload bitrate may exceed what the connection can sustain consistently. Run a speed test, lower the live resolution or bitrate to a sustainable setting, and test again with representative content. Confirm the live encoder uses CBR and the recommended keyframe interval.
Only lower playback resolutions appear after upload
New uploads may initially be available only in lower quality while YouTube continues processing higher resolutions. Check again after processing; see YouTube’s upload audio and video troubleshooting guidance.

The picture has unexpected borders or framing
Remove padding or added black bars from the video export and upload the intended aspect ratio. The player adapts to the video’s dimensions rather than requiring you to bake bars into it.
Or let it run in the cloud
