Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →For a computer with a supported modern hardware encoder, GPU encoding is a sensible first choice when you need to preserve CPU headroom; use CPU-based x264 if your processor can sustain the settings and your test confirms stable output and acceptable image quality. Neither option wins in every setup. The right choice depends on the encoder generation, resolution, frame rate, codec, scene, and other work running on the computer.
For a DIY OBS stream, the playlist source plays the videos; the encoder separately compresses the OBS scene for YouTube. If you want a YouTube channel to keep looping uploaded videos without leaving a computer running, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload videos, add your YouTube stream key, and go live.
What CPU or GPU encoding means for a playlist stream
In OBS, playback and encoding are separate jobs. A source loads and plays a file or playlist into your scene; the selected output encoder then compresses that scene into the live stream sent to YouTube.
- CPU encoding (x264): software encoding that uses processor capacity.
- GPU hardware encoding: uses a specialized video-encoding component, when available, to take encoding work off the CPU. OBS lists NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF, Intel QSV, and Apple VideoToolbox, with availability depending on platform and hardware.
- Hardware decoding: a separate source playback option. Enabling hardware decoding for a video file does not select the encoder used for the outgoing stream.
OBS describes modern hardware encoders as generally recommended for performance, while noting that earlier generations can deliver lower image quality than x264 at the same bitrate. That is general guidance, not a controlled comparison across every encoder, preset, codec, and bitrate; assess your own system and output.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
CPU versus GPU: which should you choose?
| Decision factor | CPU software encoding (x264) | GPU hardware encoding |
|---|---|---|
| Resource use | Uses CPU capacity; suitable when the processor has enough headroom for your chosen settings and other workloads. | A supported hardware encoder can offload encoding from the CPU. The GPU must support the selected encoder and codec. |
| Image quality | Can be appropriate when a test at the intended bitrate and settings looks good and remains stable. | Quality depends on encoder generation and settings. OBS warns that earlier-generation hardware encoders may look worse than x264 at the same bitrate. |
| Compatibility | x264 is OBS’s included software encoder. | Depends on hardware, operating system, drivers, and codec support. |
| When to favor it | When CPU capacity is available and representative testing shows stable performance and acceptable quality. | When CPU headroom is the constraint and the machine has a supported modern hardware encoder. |
Do not buy a GPU or upgrade a CPU based on the encoder label alone. First test the machine you have at the resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity you plan to use. A playlist does not automatically require a powerful graphics card, particularly if the scene does not add animation, gameplay, or complex compositing.
Set up the playlist and encoder in OBS
- Add the playback source. For one local video, add a Media Source and enable its loop option if it should repeat. For a multi-file playlist, add a VLC Video source; it can hold multiple items, preserve or shuffle their order, and loop the playlist. VLC must be installed for this source to be available.
- Choose the outgoing encoder. In OBS output settings, select x264 or a hardware encoder supported by your machine. Choose a codec accepted by YouTube’s current ingest guidance. Do not mistake a source’s hardware-decoding setting for the stream encoder choice.
- Set YouTube-compatible output parameters. YouTube recommends CBR, RTMPS where available, and a two-second keyframe interval; it says not to exceed four seconds. Consult YouTube’s live encoder settings for bitrate guidance for your exact resolution and frame rate rather than copying an untargeted bitrate.
- Check output resolution and frame rate. Use the output you actually need and verify it matches the YouTube settings selected for the stream. Higher output demands can affect encoding load; there is no universal minimum computer specification established for this playlist workflow.
- Run a representative preflight. Test with the same playlist behavior, scene, motion, audio, output settings, and other applications you expect during the stream. Monitor OBS performance and YouTube stream health before relying on the setup for a long broadcast.
YouTube transcodes incoming live streams into different playback formats for viewers. The practical priority is a stable, supported ingest stream, not locally encoding every playback variant.

Diagnose dropped frames, stutter, or poor quality
- Encoding overload or unstable output: compare x264 and a supported hardware encoder under the same representative workload. If CPU capacity is the bottleneck, hardware encoding may help; if using an older hardware encoder produces an unacceptable picture, test x264 if the processor can sustain it.
- Playback or scene load: inspect video decoding, scaling, and unnecessary scene sources as well as the encoder. OBS advises reducing source resolution when diagnosing performance problems if the full source resolution is not needed for the output.
- Ingest configuration warning: check codec compatibility, CBR, the two-second keyframe recommendation (never above four seconds), RTMPS availability, and the bitrate guidance for the chosen output. Use YouTube’s stream-health feedback rather than guessing from the preview alone.
- Playlist does not advance or repeat as intended: check the source type and its loop or shuffle behavior. Media Source is for an individual file; the multi-item VLC Video source requires VLC to be installed.
- Quality is unsatisfactory: verify the selected resolution, frame rate, bitrate guidance, codec, and encoder generation. A hardware encoder is not automatically better at every bitrate, and YouTube’s viewer-side transcoding does not repair an unstable or unsuitable ingest feed.
Copyright and reused-content checks still matter
Using a playlist or a hardware encoder does not grant permission to broadcast its contents. Before scheduling a stream, confirm that you have the necessary rights to the video, music, and other material, and review YouTube’s live-stream and monetization rules for your channel. Repeating pre-recorded material may also raise reused-content concerns for monetization; encoding choice does not change the originality or rights status of the content. Use the copyright safety checklist as a practical review aid, not a substitute for permission or YouTube’s rules.
