Rogue Trader does not use one universal companion-approval bar. Companions react through conviction-sensitive dialogue, their personal quests, story flags, and whether they are available for a particular scene. To keep the roster intact, follow each companion’s quest, check the active-party requirement before major conversations, preserve a range of Dogmatic, Iconoclast, and Heretical options, and verify late-game recruitment conditions before Chapter 4’s point of no return.
There is no single approval meter to farm
Player-facing evidence supports a network of reactions rather than a numeric relationship score shared by the whole roster. A companion can approve of one decision because it matches their convictions, object to another because it conflicts with their outlook, and still remain available because a separate quest or story condition has not been broken. The exact departure thresholds for every companion are not established in a complete, current trigger list, so treat claims about a universal score or guaranteed loyalty threshold with caution.

This also changes how you should interpret a quiet reaction. A companion who does not interrupt a conversation has not necessarily gained or lost a measurable number of approval points. Some consequences appear later in personal quests, dialogue, companion endings, recruitment opportunities, or the availability of a character for a scene.

Your Rogue Trader’s identity
Owlcat has described work on reactivity to the player character’s biography, doctrines, and convictions. In a beta-feedback post, the studio wrote: “One of the most frequent complaints in the survey was the insufficient reactivity of NPCs and companions to the Rogue Trader’s biography, doctrines, and convictions.” That statement is development history, not a complete list of current triggers, but it explains why identical choices can land differently depending on the character you are role-playing.

Conviction tags are the three broad ideological directions used by the game:
- Dogmatic: choices that emphasize strict Imperial authority, doctrine, and order.
- Iconoclast: choices that prioritize pragmatic mercy, individual lives, or humane alternatives.
- Heretical: choices that reject Imperial orthodoxy and move toward forbidden power or beliefs.
These labels are not a substitute for a companion-by-companion approval chart. They are a way to anticipate which characters may react to a decision and which later options your conviction path may open or close.
Personal quests and story conditions
Companions have individual quests, and the companion reference used by many players notes that those quests can influence individual endings. A character may therefore care more about whether you completed a specific objective, brought them into a key confrontation, or respected a personal request than about the total number of choices that matched their ideology.
Recommended Free Tools
Keep the relevant companion available when their quest advances. If a quest journal names a character, add that character before entering the next major dialogue or location instead of assuming the game will evaluate the whole roster from the ship.
Availability and timing
The roster is assembled in phases. Characters can join during the prologue and Chapters 1 through 3, while optional, secret, and downloadable-content companions follow separate conditions. A decision that is harmless early in the campaign can matter later if it removes the character needed for a quest or a recruitment sequence.

Conviction points: why old guides disagree
Owlcat’s Update 1.3 notes, published December 10, 2024, state: “Major increase in availability of conviction points.” The update also increased the values awarded by many Act III and Act IV dialogue choices and projects for Dogmatic, Heretical, and Iconoclast convictions. This is why older walkthroughs can show different totals or recommend a different order of choices.
The same notes clarify that choices already selected and projects already completed would not immediately award the new points. That avoided changing a character’s conviction involuntarily after the patch. In practical terms, a guide written before Update 1.3 may understate the points available from later acts, while a save made before the update will not necessarily be retroactively recalculated.
- Use the current game version’s displayed conviction rewards when planning a route.
- Do not copy an old point total as a guaranteed threshold for a companion reaction.
- Read the conviction tag on the actual dialogue option; wording alone is not reliable.
- Expect Act III and Act IV planning advice to be especially version-sensitive.
A safe routine for major conversations
The following routine protects both optional dialogue and companion availability without requiring you to maintain a fictional approval score.
- Read the quest journal first. Identify which companion, faction, location, or unresolved personal objective is named before leaving the Voidship.
- Form the party for the scene. If the entry or walkthrough indicates a party-presence requirement, place that companion in the active group before starting the conversation. Examples in a conviction-choice appendix include Abelard, Pasqal, Cassia, and Jae.
- Inspect the choice tags. Note whether the available responses are Dogmatic, Iconoclast, Heretical, or untagged. Choose the option that fits your intended conviction path and the companion’s established priorities.
- Save before an irreversible transition. Make a manual save before a major quest decision, entering a new act, or approaching a point of no return. This is particularly useful when a guide describes a conditional recruitment outcome rather than a fully documented decision tree.
- Finish personal objectives before advancing the main plot. A companion quest can disappear behind a chapter transition or become impossible after a major story event.
- Recheck the roster after the scene. Confirm that the companion is still recruitable, that their personal quest remains in the journal, and that no new objective requires a different party configuration.
This process is more dependable than repeatedly selecting supposedly “friendly” lines. The game’s relevant state can include conviction, prior actions, quest completion, chapter, and the character present when the dialogue fired.
Party-presence requirements: when the companion must be there
Some conviction-choice entries explicitly mark a requirement for a named companion to be in the active party. The practical implication is simple: being alive on the Voidship is not always equivalent to being present for the scene. The available choice list gives examples involving Abelard, Pasqal, Cassia, and Jae, but it is not an official exhaustive database of every dialogue trigger.

Before a companion’s own quest
- Put the quest owner in the active party before entering the destination.
- Keep a second slot available if the quest is likely to add a temporary participant or an escort.
- Do not dismiss the companion immediately after the first conversation; subsequent objectives can use the same presence check.
Before a conviction-sensitive choice
- Check for the companion’s name in the quest text or your chosen walkthrough.
- Bring the character even if their combat role is not ideal for the next fight.
- Use a manual save before selecting an option whose consequences are described as permanent or chapter-dependent.
These checks answer the common question “Do companions react when they are not in the party?” with a qualified answer: some story state can be evaluated outside the active group, but specific dialogue entries can require the named companion to be present. Do not assume one rule covers every scene.

Keep companions available without forcing one party build
You do not need to use one prescribed six-person lineup. Instead, rotate characters so that the companion needed for a quest or dialogue is present, then rebuild around the encounter’s demands. The companion roster reference describes complementary roles such as:
| Companion example | Reference role | How to use that information |
|---|---|---|
| Abelard | Melee-oriented Warrior | Bring him when a durable front line or a quest-presence check matters; replace him temporarily if another companion is required for a scene. |
| Argenta | Ranged Soldier | Use her to cover sustained ranged damage while you reserve a slot for a companion whose dialogue condition is more important than a marginal combat upgrade. |
| Cassia | Support Officer | Her support capabilities can fill a control or buff gap when the party is assembled around a personal quest. |
| Other companions | Distinct abilities and specializations | Choose the character who supplies the missing role, skill, or story presence rather than treating approval as a reason to keep one fixed team. |
Rotating the roster also gives you more chances to notice personal-quest updates. A companion who is rarely deployed can still have a new objective waiting on the Voidship, so check the journal and speak with the crew between major missions.
Recruitment is phased, and late recruits are spoiler-sensitive
Prologue through Chapter 3
The roster reference places standard recruitment across the prologue and Chapters 1–3. Some characters are straightforward additions, while others are optional or depend on actions earlier in the campaign. If you want a broad roster, investigate available leads before leaving a chapter rather than assuming every recruit remains accessible indefinitely.
Optional, secret, and DLC-dependent companions
Optional and secret characters do not follow the same availability rules as core recruits. Downloadable-content characters also depend on the relevant content being installed and enabled. Treat each such recruit as its own quest chain: identify the prerequisite, complete the required action, and confirm the character has joined before moving on.

Spoiler warning: final Chapter 4 recruitment window
The following concerns late-game recruitment. A walkthrough describes one or two final companions as potentially recruitable shortly before the end of Chapter 4, depending on your conviction and earlier actions. The opportunity is close to a point of no return, and the available evidence does not establish a complete decision tree for every route.
To protect this opportunity:
- Review your current Dogmatic, Iconoclast, or Heretical direction before entering the final Chapter 4 sequence.
- Confirm that the earlier actions associated with the recruit were completed.
- Make a separate save before the point of no return.
- Do not rely on a generic “high approval” claim; verify the specific conditions described for your route.
- After the recruitment scene, check the roster and personal-quest log before continuing.
Because the condition list is not fully verified for every edition and platform, a guide’s route should be treated as conditional guidance, not a guarantee that one dialogue line will recruit the character.
Personal quests matter more than a theoretical score
When deciding between a main-plot objective and a companion request, account for the quest’s timing and the character’s role in its outcome. Completing a personal quest can influence an individual ending, while postponing it may allow a chapter transition to change what is available. The game therefore rewards an active roster-management habit:
- Check for new companion dialogue after returning to the Voidship.
- Advance personal quests before launching a major act transition when the journal permits it.
- Bring the quest owner to locations named in their objective.
- Record unresolved requests in your own notes if several quests compete for the same travel window.
None of these steps requires treating companions as a collection of hidden points. They preserve the story conditions that the available guides identify as consequential.
Respecs do not erase a companion’s identity
The companion reference describes respec access through the High Factorum on the Voidship Bridge. It also limits the level to which a companion can be rebuilt: respecs return only to the level at which that character joined. Key character-build choices remain locked.
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Use this system to correct a role mismatch, not to assume unlimited build freedom. If a companion joined at a later level, you cannot necessarily reconstruct every earlier progression choice. Plan around the character’s fixed identity and use the respec for the portions the game actually exposes.
A practical respec checklist
- Travel to the Voidship Bridge and access the High Factorum.
- Check the companion’s joining level before confirming changes.
- Identify which archetype or key choices are locked.
- Adjust attributes, talents, or role elements only within the permitted range.
- Save after testing the revised build so you can revert if the party loses an important skill or support function.
Common problems and the least risky response
“I chose the right conviction, but the companion still objected.”
Conviction alignment is only one possible input. Review whether the character was present, whether a personal quest was active, and whether an earlier action set a different story flag. Do not infer that one matching tag guarantees approval.
“The walkthrough shows more conviction points than my save.”
Compare the guide’s date with Update 1.3. Later Act III and Act IV awards changed, while already completed choices and projects were not retroactively granted the increased values. Use the points displayed in your current version.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches“A companion is on the Voidship, but the dialogue option did not appear.”
Return to the scene with that companion in the active party. The choice list documents party-presence requirements for several entries, including examples involving Abelard, Pasqal, Cassia, and Jae.
“A recruit disappeared after I advanced the story.”
Reload the save before the chapter transition if possible, then review the character’s prerequisite actions and conviction direction. Late recruitment can be conditional and close to Chapter 4’s point of no return, so a general approval score cannot diagnose the loss.
“Can I keep every companion by choosing neutral dialogue?”
There is no evidence that neutral wording guarantees universal retention. Some companions respond to convictions, biography, doctrines, quests, and prior actions. Make the choice that fits your intended route, protect the relevant quest conditions, and keep a pre-decision save when the outcome is unclear.
A chapter-by-chapter party-management plan
Prologue and Chapter 1
- Recruit the available core characters and learn their combat roles.
- Read every new personal-quest entry before leaving the current hub or ship.
- Begin recording which companions favor or resist your emerging conviction direction.
Chapters 2 and 3
- Rotate the roster so personal quests receive active-party time.
- Check dialogue requirements before major locations and conviction choices.
- Use current-version conviction rewards rather than an old walkthrough’s totals.
- Complete optional recruitment leads before committing to the next major story transition.
Chapter 4
- Resolve outstanding personal quests where the journal allows it.
- Save before the point-of-no-return sequence.
- Verify the conviction and prior-action requirements for any secret recruit.
- After the late-game recruitment window, confirm the final roster before beginning the endgame chain.
What “keep the party together” really means
In Rogue Trader, keeping the party together is less about maximizing an invisible approval total and more about preserving access to the conditions that make companions react and remain available. Maintain a deliberate conviction path, bring named companions into the scenes that require them, advance personal quests, and treat chapter transitions and secret recruitment as checkpoints. Because no complete, current companion-departure threshold table is established, keep manual saves around irreversible choices and avoid promises that one value guarantees every character’s loyalty.
