Manage VPS kernel updates by first confirming whether the guest operating system or the provider controls the booted kernel, then install updates through the supported distribution packages, prepare a recovery route, and reboot when you need to activate a newly installed kernel. Installing an update does not itself switch the running system to that kernel.
Before updating, identify the kernel and who controls it
VPS images do not all boot the kernel installed inside the guest OS. A provider may supply or control the kernel, or the image may use a guest-managed kernel. The right update method depends on that arrangement, so check the VPS image and provider documentation before changing packages or boot settings.
- Identify the operating system: run
cat /etc/os-release. - Identify the running kernel: run
uname -r. This reports the kernel currently running, not necessarily the newest kernel installed on disk. - Check the image and provider documentation: confirm who supplies the kernel and how the VPS selects it at boot. If the provider manages it, follow the provider’s documented update process rather than assuming guest package updates control the booted kernel.
These commands are useful diagnostics, but the OS name alone does not prove which kernel the VPS boots.
Install updates through the supported distribution channel
Use the package repositories and update tools supported by your distribution and release. Avoid treating an upstream mainline kernel build as the default maintenance route: custom kernels add bootloader and recovery responsibilities that ordinary security maintenance generally does not require.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Debian
Use Debian’s configured repositories and package manager. Debian’s release guidance recommends having an appropriate linux-image-* metapackage installed so later package upgrades can follow kernel updates. Check the current release guidance and choose a metapackage that matches your architecture and environment; do not copy a package name from another VPS without checking.
Debian’s published upgrade guidance is release-specific. Confirm the instructions for the Debian release you actually run rather than applying guidance for Debian 12 (bookworm) automatically to a different release.
Ubuntu
Use Ubuntu’s APT update and security-update workflow. Ubuntu Livepatch, if eligible and enabled for your exact release and kernel combination, covers supported high- and critical-severity kernel security fixes while the system is running. It does not enable APT security updates for you.

Other distributions and provider-managed kernels
Use the distribution’s own supported update procedure. The appropriate package name and commands differ across distributions, and the available information here does not establish a universal command for them. For a provider-managed kernel, follow the provider’s current image and boot documentation.

Review the update and plan a reboot
After the package operation, review its output and confirm whether a new kernel was installed. Compare the installed kernel packages with uname -r: the package manager may have installed a newer kernel while the VPS continues running the old one.
To activate a newly installed kernel, plan a reboot during a maintenance window appropriate to the service. Debian recommends rebooting at the next available opportunity after installing a kernel; Canonical likewise says a reboot is required to upgrade to a newer kernel version. For a production VPS, communicate the interruption, schedule the window, and, if available, test the procedure on a representative non-production machine first. Testing reduces avoidable surprises but cannot guarantee a production reboot will succeed.

Prepare recovery access before restarting
A remote server can fail to boot or restore networking after a kernel change. Before rebooting, make sure you have a way to recover the VPS that does not depend solely on its normal network connection.
- Confirm that current backups exist and that you know how to restore the application and its data.
- Locate the provider’s rescue mode, serial console, or equivalent out-of-band access, and confirm you can reach the relevant control panel.
- Review the provider’s instructions for boot selection and recovery for this specific image.
- Know which application services, storage mounts, firewall rules, and monitoring checks you will verify after startup.
Debian warns that remotely managed systems can encounter boot or networking problems and recommends precautions such as access through a remote serial terminal. The actual recovery controls vary by provider; verify that they exist and are usable for your VPS before starting the maintenance.

- Reboot during the planned window using the method documented for your OS and provider.
- Wait for the VPS to become reachable, then run
uname -rand compare the result with the kernel package you intended to activate. - Check that important services started, expected filesystems are mounted, firewall rules are in effect, and monitoring has resumed.
- If the VPS does not return, use the provider’s documented console or rescue route. Diagnose the boot and networking state there, then follow the distribution’s recovery instructions. Do not assume that an unreachable VPS is simply taking longer to restart.
Can you update a VPS kernel without downtime?
Live patching can avoid an immediate reboot for a limited set of supported kernel security fixes; it is not a general replacement for rebooting into a newer kernel. Canonical states: “Live kernel patching is not sufficient when you need to upgrade your kernel to a newer version — a reboot is required in that case.” Check the Livepatch documentation and client status for your exact Ubuntu release, kernel flavor, and architecture before relying on coverage.

Other changes, including some CPU microcode, low-level dependencies, or firmware updates, can also require a restart. Do not interpret an active live-patching service as proof that every update has taken effect or that the VPS never needs rebooting.
The Linux kernel’s Live Update Orchestrator is a specialized, kexec-based mechanism for moving between kernel versions while preserving selected resources. It depends on supported kernel and system components; it is not a turnkey no-reboot feature for every VPS administrator.

The package update finished, but uname -r is unchanged

The VPS does not come back after reboot
Use the provider’s out-of-band console or rescue mode, if available, and check boot output and network configuration. Restore service using the provider’s documented recovery process and your OS’s recovery guidance. This is why console access and backups should be confirmed before—not after—the restart.
Livepatch is enabled, but a newer kernel version is still needed
Livepatch’s covered fixes do not change the VPS to a newer kernel version. Install the appropriate distribution update and plan a reboot to activate it.
Livepatch does not report support for this VPS
Support depends on the Ubuntu release, kernel version and flavor, and architecture. Check current eligibility and client status for the exact combination. Do not infer coverage merely because Ubuntu is installed.
Updates appear to install, but the expected kernel is not selected at boot
Check whether the provider or guest controls the kernel and boot selection, then consult the provider’s documentation for the image. Avoid changing bootloader settings or installing a custom kernel without a recovery path and a clear reason.
