How to Manage Nintendo Switch Storage Before Downloading a Large Game

Use Data Management to check space, archive games safely, move eligible software to microSD, and verify whether a large Switch game needs extra storage.

Before downloading a large game on a Nintendo Switch, Switch Lite or Switch – OLED Model, check the free space at HOME Menu > System Settings > Data Management. If space is tight, archive a game you are not playing: the installed software is removed, its HOME Menu icon remains, and its save data stays in system memory. You can redownload the archived game later.

A microSD card is optional, not an automatic requirement. Use one when you regularly download games or want more software available without repeated redownloads. Nintendo Switch 2 has different storage-card requirements, so this guide applies only to the original Nintendo Switch family.

Check the required space and where your free space is

Start with the console’s storage screen rather than guessing from the size of a game’s box or a retailer listing. A game can need additional downloadable content even when you own a physical game card, and a digital listing gives the most relevant requirement for a digital purchase.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the HOME Menu.
  2. Choose System Settings.
  3. Select Data Management.
  4. Review the available space in System Memory and, if inserted, on the microSD Card.

The destination with insufficient space is the one that must be cleared. Having a microSD card inserted does not mean every existing game is already stored there. Eligible software data can be moved between system memory and the card, but some data cannot be moved and save data is never transferred to the card.

Check the game’s own storage requirement

For a digital purchase, open the game’s Nintendo eShop listing and check its required storage before buying or downloading. For a physical game, inspect the packaging and any publisher information. A game card can still require downloaded data, updates or additional content, so owning the physical cartridge does not guarantee that the console needs no free space.

Compare the stated requirement with the free space shown for the actual download destination. If a card is present, newly downloaded and redownloaded software normally goes to that card by default; if no card is present, it uses system memory. The presence of a card is therefore not proof that it has enough free capacity, nor proof that an older title has been moved there.

Allow room for the complete installation

Treat the eShop or packaging figure as the amount you need to accommodate, not as a reason to delete only a tiny amount. Updates or additional downloadable content can also require space. If the console reports that the destination is full, return to Data Management and check the specific system-memory or microSD figure named by the message. Clearing space in the other location will not solve a shortage on the download destination.

Archive a game to free space without losing its save

Archiving is usually the best first move when you need room temporarily. It removes the downloaded software data but keeps the game’s HOME Menu icon. Selecting that icon later starts a redownload. Nintendo’s support guidance says the game save is unaffected by archiving.

Archive one game from its icon

  1. Highlight the game on the HOME Menu.
  2. Press the + or − button.
  3. Choose Manage Software.
  4. Select Archive Software and confirm.

The game’s icon remains visible, making it easy to find when you want to install it again. You will need an internet connection and enough free space at that time to redownload the software and any required updates. Archiving is useful when you want to preserve a title’s place on the HOME Menu while making a large download possible today.

Archive several games with Quick Archive

  1. From the HOME Menu, open System Settings.
  2. Choose Data Management.
  3. Select Quick Archive.
  4. Mark the titles you want to remove from storage.
  5. Choose Archive Data, then select Archive.

Menu wording can vary slightly with the system menu version. Confirm the selected titles carefully before accepting the operation. Quick Archive is convenient when several seldom-played downloads are consuming space, but it is still worth checking each title so you do not remove a game you expected to play offline immediately.

What archiving does to progress

Archiving removes the installed game data, not the save. Save data is stored in system memory and is associated with the user who created it. Use that same user profile after redownloading to continue the existing progress. The microSD card is not a backup location for saves, and archiving is not a substitute for any separate save-management feature.

“Game save data cannot be saved or copied to a microSD card.” — Nintendo Support

Delete software when you no longer need its icon

Deleting downloaded software also frees the space while leaving the save data in system memory. The difference is that deletion removes the title’s HOME Menu icon. If you later want the game, you must locate it again in your software library and redownload it.

  1. Open System Settings from the HOME Menu.
  2. Go to Data Management and choose Manage Software.
  3. Select the game.
  4. Choose Delete Software and confirm.

Deleting software does not erase the save associated with the user. It is therefore appropriate for games you have finished or do not expect to reinstall soon, while archiving is more convenient for games you want to keep visible. Before confirming, distinguish Delete Software from any separate save-data controls shown in Data Management; the operation described here removes the downloaded program, not the progress.

Choose the right storage action

Option Immediate space benefit Icon and save Main trade-off
Archive an old download Removes the downloaded software data. HOME Menu icon remains; save stays in system memory. You must redownload the game before playing again.
Delete an old download Removes the downloaded software data. Icon is removed; save remains in system memory. You must find the title again and redownload it.
Move eligible software to microSD Frees space in system memory without removing the installed software from the console. Save remains in system memory. Requires enough card capacity; some software or update data cannot be moved.
Add a microSD card Adds storage for software data and makes the card the normal destination for new and redownloaded software. Save data remains in system memory. Requires buying a compatible card and choosing capacity for your library.

Use archiving when reversibility and a visible reminder matter. Use deletion when the icon is no longer useful. Moving is preferable when a compatible card already has free capacity and you want the installed title to remain available. Buying a card addresses recurring capacity pressure rather than a one-time shortage alone.

Move eligible software between system memory and a microSD card

If system memory is nearly full but the card has room, move installed software instead of archiving it. Insert a compatible microSD card, then use the console’s move-data tool.

  1. Open System Settings from the HOME Menu.
  2. Select Data Management.
  3. Choose Move Data Between System / microSD Card.
  4. Choose whether to move data from system memory to the microSD card or in the opposite direction.
  5. Select the eligible software and confirm the move.

This operation concerns software data only. Save data cannot be moved to microSD. Nintendo also notes that some update data cannot be moved, and a title’s storage location can differ after software updates. If a game still occupies some system memory after a move, that does not necessarily mean the operation failed; it may contain data that the console does not permit you to transfer.

The move command is also useful in the opposite direction. If a card becomes crowded while system memory has room, eligible software can be moved back. Check both storage summaries after the operation, and do not assume that every component associated with a title will follow it. Saves remain tied to system memory and the relevant user.

When buying a microSD card makes sense

Buy a card when you expect repeated digital downloads, keep several large games installed, or want to avoid archiving and redownloading whenever a new title arrives. A card is not mandatory for every large game. The specific game’s eShop listing, publisher information or physical packaging determines whether additional storage is required.

The cost decision is practical rather than universal: a card is an additional purchase, while archiving costs no hardware money but requires a later download whenever you return to a title. If your library is mostly physical and only a few digital games are installed, system memory or a smaller supported card may be sufficient. A player who regularly downloads large releases may value more capacity because it reduces repeated uninstall and redownload steps.

Nintendo’s supported card types

Card type Capacity listed by Nintendo Important condition
microSD Up to 2 GB Supported.
microSDHC 4 GB–32 GB Supported.
microSDXC 64 GB–2 TB The console must connect to the internet and receive a system update before use.

Nintendo recommends a UHS-I card with a read speed of 60–95 MB/s. A UHS-II card can be used, but the Switch does not operate it at UHS-II speeds. Those figures are compatibility guidance, not a promise that every game will occupy a particular amount of space or load at a particular rate.

Pick capacity from your actual library

There is no single capacity that suits every Switch owner. Count the digital games, downloadable expansions and updates you expect to keep installed, then compare that total with your budget and the card capacities available. Someone who mainly uses physical cartridges and keeps only a few digital games may need much less capacity than a player with an all-digital library.

Plan for the titles you actually expect to download, rather than buying a card solely because one game has a large requirement. If your needs grow, the relevant question is whether the card’s remaining capacity accommodates the next planned download and its associated data. A larger card can be convenient, but Nintendo’s supported range and the reader’s budget should guide the choice.

When shopping, look for a card described as a compatible microSD card for Nintendo Switch, confirm its capacity and check that its speed specification meets Nintendo’s UHS-I recommendation. Do not treat a larger number as proof that a particular game will require the card; verify the game’s own listing first. Capacity should be selected for the library you intend to keep available, not from a one-size-fits-all rule.

Why a USB hard drive is not the answer

Nintendo states that external USB hard drives are not currently supported as storage for Nintendo Switch. Expanding software storage therefore means using the console’s supported microSD formats rather than attaching a USB drive.

A practical sequence before downloading a large game

  1. Read the game’s requirement. Check the digital eShop listing or the physical game packaging, including any notice that extra data is required.
  2. Check both storage locations. Go to System Settings > Data Management and identify whether the intended download will use system memory or the inserted microSD card.
  3. Archive games you may play again. Use Manage Software > Archive Software for one title or Quick Archive for several.
  4. Delete games you are finished with. Use deletion only when losing the HOME Menu icon is acceptable; the save remains available to the same user.
  5. Move eligible software if the card has unused space. Use Move Data Between System / microSD Card and remember that saves and some update data stay where Nintendo requires.
  6. Install a card if pressure is recurring. Choose a supported capacity and Nintendo-recommended UHS-I speed rather than buying a card solely because one game is large.
  7. Start the download and recheck storage. If the console still reports insufficient space, return to Data Management and inspect the destination named by the system.

This order avoids an unnecessary purchase for a one-off download and avoids deleting saves while trying to clear software space. It also separates three different fixes: remove software temporarily, relocate eligible software, or add capacity for a pattern of future downloads.

Troubleshooting common storage problems

There is a microSD card, but the new download still will not fit

Check the free space shown specifically for the microSD card and confirm that the card is being used as the download destination. A card can be inserted while older titles remain in system memory. Move eligible software with the Data Management command, or archive software that is no longer needed immediately. If the game’s requirement exceeds the card’s remaining capacity, the card’s mere presence cannot resolve the shortage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A moved game still uses some system memory

Not all data is movable. Nintendo identifies save data and some update data as exceptions, and software updates can affect where data is stored. Inspect the storage summary rather than assuming every byte of a title must appear on the card.

You are worried that archiving will erase progress

Archiving removes the installed software, while the save remains in system memory. Redownload the title and launch it with the same user profile that created the save. Deleting the downloaded software has the same save-preservation result, but removes the HOME Menu icon.

A physical copy still asks for free space

Some physical releases require downloaded data for the full game or for updates. Use the packaging and the publisher’s information to determine the required amount; the cartridge itself does not guarantee a zero-download installation.

You bought a 64 GB or larger card and it does not work immediately

Cards in the 64 GB–2 TB microSDXC range require the Switch to connect to the internet and update its system before the card can be used. The capacity range is supported by Nintendo, but the update prerequisite still applies.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You cannot move a particular title

The move command applies only to eligible software data. Save data is excluded, and Nintendo notes that some update data cannot move. If the title is not offered as movable or still leaves data in system memory, use the storage summary to determine what remains and consider archiving another download or adding capacity.

You are deciding between archiving and buying a card

Archive first if you only need temporary room and do not mind downloading the title again later. Consider a card if storage pressure recurs across multiple downloads or you want several large games installed at once. The correct choice depends on download habits, library size and budget, not simply on whether the next game is described as large.

Key takeaways

  • Check available space at HOME Menu > System Settings > Data Management before downloading.
  • Verify the specific game’s eShop listing or packaging; physical releases may still need downloaded data.
  • Archive first when you want reversible space savings: the icon and save remain, while the installed download is removed.
  • Delete software when you no longer need its icon; the save still remains in system memory.
  • Inserted microSD cards are the default destination for new and redownloaded software, but existing titles may need to be moved manually.
  • Save data cannot be moved to microSD, and some update data is not movable.
  • Nintendo supports microSD, microSDHC and microSDXC cards, recommends UHS-I and 60–95 MB/s read speed, and does not currently support external USB hard drives for storage.
  • Choose card capacity for the library you intend to keep installed; there is no mandatory size for every Switch owner.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will archiving a Switch game delete my save?

No. Archiving removes the downloaded software but leaves the save data in system memory. Redownload the game and use the same user profile to continue.

What is the difference between archiving and deleting software?

Both remove downloaded software and preserve the save. Archiving keeps the HOME Menu icon for convenient redownloading; deleting removes the icon, so you must locate the title again.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does a microSD card automatically move my existing games?

No. New and redownloaded software normally uses an inserted card by default, but existing eligible software must be moved through Data Management. Some data cannot be moved.

Can Switch save data be stored on a microSD card?

No. Nintendo states that game save data cannot be saved or copied to a microSD card; saves remain in system memory.

Do physical Switch games need storage space?

Sometimes. Packaging or publisher information identifies releases that require downloaded data, updates or additional content, so a cartridge does not guarantee a zero-download installation.

What microSD cards does Nintendo Switch support?

Nintendo lists microSD up to 2 GB, microSDHC from 4–32 GB and microSDXC from 64 GB–2 TB. A microSDXC card requires an internet connection and system update before use. Nintendo recommends UHS-I and 60–95 MB/s read speed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I use a USB hard drive instead of a microSD card?

No. Nintendo says external USB hard drives are not currently supported as storage for Nintendo Switch.

How much microSD capacity should I buy?

Base the choice on the digital games, updates and downloadable content you expect to keep installed, plus your budget. Nintendo does not require one universal capacity for every player.

The Bottom Line

Check the game’s own storage requirement, then inspect the exact destination under System Settings > Data Management. Archive an idle download first when you need reversible space and want to keep its icon; delete it when the icon no longer matters. If an inserted card has room, move eligible software, remembering that saves and some update data stay in system memory. For recurring shortages, choose a supported UHS-I microSD card sized for your actual library—Nintendo Switch does not use external USB hard drives for storage.
