To install a downloaded Minecraft modpack, import its archive into a launcher that supports that pack’s format. A modpack is more than a folder of mod files: its profile can include a Minecraft version, a mod loader, configuration, and other files. Importing it as a separate instance is usually safer than copying files into your main game folder.
How do I manually install a Minecraft modpack?
First identify what you downloaded. A CurseForge export ZIP, a Modrinth MRPack, a complete instance folder, and individual mod JARs are different things and do not all use the same installation steps.

- CurseForge-exported ZIP: Use a launcher that supports CurseForge’s exported profile structure, such as the CurseForge app.
- MRPack: Import it with a launcher that supports the format, such as Prism Launcher. Modrinth recommends its own app for Modrinth packs and lists Prism, MultiMC, and ATLauncher for client-side use.
- Complete instance folder: Follow the instructions for the launcher and pack that created it; an instance folder is not necessarily an importable archive.
- One or more .jar files: These are individual mods, not a complete modpack. See the single-mod steps below.
Prism Launcher documents importing compatible ZIP and MRPack archives through its Add Instance flow. CurseForge’s import process expects a compatible ZIP built with its export structure, rather than any ZIP that happens to contain mod files. How to import an archive into Prism Launcher
- Open Prism Launcher and choose Add Instance.
- Select Import, then choose the compatible ZIP or MRPack file you downloaded.
- Check the displayed Minecraft version and mod loader against the pack’s stated requirements, then complete the import.
- Launch the newly created instance. Keep it separate from other profiles so its mods and configuration stay associated with the correct pack.
Prism’s import support is format-dependent; a ZIP that is not a compatible modpack export may not import successfully. Prism Launcher import instructions.

How to import a CurseForge pack without manually copying files
In the CurseForge app, use its profile import workflow and select the pack’s exported ZIP. The archive must follow CurseForge’s export structure. If a valid exported archive still fails to import, CurseForge recommends repairing the app. A random ZIP of a profile’s files is not necessarily compatible with this importer. Can I add a modpack without the CurseForge app?
Yes, if you use a launcher that supports the format of the file you have. Prism Launcher documents compatible ZIP and MRPack imports; for Modrinth packs, Modrinth also recommends its own app and lists Prism, MultiMC, and ATLauncher as client-side options. Support for a particular archive format does not guarantee that every pack or loader is supported, so check the launcher’s instructions and the pack’s requirements before importing.

CurseForge’s own import workflow is intended for its exported profile structure. If you want to avoid the CurseForge app, do not assume another launcher can import every CurseForge ZIP unchanged; confirm the archive format and the alternative launcher’s current support. Check the Minecraft version and mod loader
Before launching, confirm the pack’s Minecraft version and loader. Forge, Fabric, NeoForge, and Quilt are distinct profile types, and a mod intended for another game version or loader may not work. Where do I put a modpack ZIP?
Usually, you do not put the ZIP directly into Minecraft’s .minecraft folder. Import it through a compatible launcher so the launcher can create an instance and place the pack’s files where that profile expects them. An archive can contain metadata and override files as well as mod files, so extracting it into a guessed location or copying only its mods folder can leave the pack incomplete.
If you have an MRPack
An MRPack has a root modrinth.index.json file and may include an overrides directory. The index describes dependencies and downloadable files; override content belongs in the instance directory. A launcher that understands MRPack handles those parts as part of the import. Modrinth modpack format documentation.

If you have individual Fabric mods
For a single Fabric mod, use the mod’s instructions and make sure it supports the profile’s Minecraft version and Fabric setup. Fabric’s guide says to place the mod JAR in the relevant instance’s mods directory and start the Fabric profile. That procedure installs an individual mod; it does not reproduce a complete modpack’s loader configuration, settings, or other overrides. Fabric: Installing Mods.
What to do if the import fails or the pack will not launch
- Importer rejects the file: Check that the archive is a valid ZIP or MRPack and that the launcher accepts that specific pack format. For CurseForge, verify that it is an exported profile ZIP with the expected structure.
- Import works but launch fails: Recheck the Minecraft version and loader against the pack’s requirements. Do not substitute a different loader or a mod built for another game version.
- Files seem missing: Re-import the archive rather than copying only the mod JARs. A pack may rely on configuration or override files as well as mods.
- CurseForge export will not import: CurseForge recommends repairing the app if a valid archive using its export structure still fails.
- You need logs or want to check files: Use the newly created instance’s own files and logs so you are diagnosing the profile that actually failed.
For a pack from an unofficial source, consider whether you trust its files before installing. CurseForge warns that manually shared packs may have been altered and that it cannot verify files outside its moderation pipeline.
