Choose the correct Oracle JDK build first
Oracle’s current Linux catalog lists JDK 27 archives for Intel/AMD 64-bit systems (Linux x64) and 64-bit ARM systems (Linux aarch64), plus an x64 Debian package. The filename must match the VPS architecture; a package for the wrong architecture will not install.

Oracle requires acceptance of its license agreement before the download starts. Use Oracle’s current Java downloads page to obtain the exact filename and its SHA-256 checksum. Do not hard-code an old patch filename into a script: Oracle keeps download URL patterns stable for update releases, but release filenames and checksums still change.
Record the architecture and operating-system release before downloading. This is especially useful on VPS plans whose marketing label says “ARM” or “Linux” without identifying the actual instruction set. A 64-bit ARM host needs the aarch64 build; an x86_64 host needs x64. These binaries are not interchangeable.

Choose the archive when an application needs a private JDK, when several versions must coexist, or when you do not have root. Choose the package when you want files in the conventional JVM directory and package-manager tracking.
A tarball gives you direct control over the directory name and ownership, but updates, cleanup, and service changes are your responsibility. A .deb gives the operating system a package record and follows Debian’s system-wide layout, but the documented package route in Oracle’s current catalog is x64. On an ARM64 VPS, plan on the aarch64 archive unless the catalog later lists an ARM package.

Inspect the VPS and install download tools
Run these commands as the account that administers the server:
uname -m

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install -y ca-certificates curl taruname -m determines whether you need x64 or aarch64. The operating-system check records the distribution and release for your change log. The packages provide trusted certificate authorities, an HTTPS client, and archive extraction.
If the machine reports a 32-bit architecture, do not attempt to force a 64-bit Oracle bundle onto it. Provision a 64-bit Debian or Ubuntu VPS instead.
Check whether your account can use sudo before choosing the package route. The archive route still needs write permission to its destination, but a user-owned directory below $HOME avoids privileged operations. On a minimal image, installing the certificate bundle is important: without it, HTTPS downloads can fail even when networking itself works.

Download and verify the Oracle artifact
On Oracle’s downloads page, accept the license, select the architecture identified above, and copy the current filename. Download the file over HTTPS with a URL shown on that page. After downloading, use the SHA-256 link displayed beside the same binary and compare it locally.
sha256sum jdk-<VERSION>_linux-x64_bin.tar.gzFor an ARM archive, substitute the aarch64 filename. For a Debian package, run the same command against the .deb file. The locally calculated digest must exactly match Oracle’s published SHA-256 value. A mismatch means the file is incomplete, altered, or not the artifact whose checksum you copied; delete it and download again rather than proceeding.
Do not compare a checksum copied from a different patch release, architecture, or file type. Keep the original filename unchanged until verification is complete, because the name helps you match the digest to the correct Oracle listing. If you automate downloads, retrieve the current filename and checksum as part of each update rather than assuming a future release will retain today’s version string.
Keep the filename, checksum, download date, and selected install path in your change record. This makes later updates and rollbacks auditable.
Install Oracle Java from a tar.gz archive
System-wide archive under /opt
The archive is relocatable. The following example keeps the release directory intact and creates a stable symlink for applications:

sudo install -d -m 0755 /opt/oracle
sudo tar -xzf jdk-<VERSION>_linux-x64_bin.tar.gz -C /opt/oracle
sudo ln -sfn /opt/oracle/jdk-<VERSION> /opt/oracle/jdk-currentReplace the filename and extracted directory with the release shown in the archive. Oracle’s extraction creates a directory named for the JDK release. Confirm it before creating the link:
ls -ld /opt/oracle/jdk-*
ls -l /opt/oracle/jdk-currentUse the aarch64 archive name on an ARM VPS. Keep the directory readable and executable by the account that runs the application. The symlink lets you install a newer release beside the old one and switch versions without rewriting every application configuration.
Use a release-specific directory rather than extracting over an existing one. That preserves a known rollback target and avoids leaving a partially replaced JDK if extraction is interrupted. The jdk-current link is only a convenience; applications configured with an absolute release path will need their own update.
Per-user archive without root
For a user-owned installation, create a private library directory and extract there:

ln -sfn "$HOME/.local/lib/jdk-<VERSION>" "$HOME/.local/lib/jdk-current"Do not use sudo in this variant. Ownership remains with the account that will run the program. A service running under another account cannot use this path unless permissions and service configuration explicitly allow it.
Set the interactive shell environment
Add the environment to the login profile of the account that will invoke Java:

. ~/.profileFor a per-user install, set JAVA_HOME to $HOME/.local/lib/jdk-current instead. The current shell must source the file, log in again, or start a new login shell before it sees the change. JAVA_HOME should point to the JDK directory itself, not to its bin subdirectory.
Keep the profile change limited to the account that needs this JDK. A global profile edit can unexpectedly change administrative tools or unrelated applications. If a build tool, deployment script, or cron job needs Oracle Java, configure that execution context explicitly instead of assuming it will read your interactive profile.
Install Oracle Java from the Debian package
Oracle’s documented package command is:
sudo dpkg -i jdk-<VERSION>_linux-x64_bin.debUse the current x64 filename from Oracle’s downloads page. The package installs system-wide under a path such as /usr/lib/jvm/jdk-27-oracle-x64; the exact version directory changes with the release.
If dpkg reports missing dependencies, let APT repair the dependency state and then rerun the package installation:
sudo apt-get -f install
sudo dpkg -i jdk-<VERSION>_linux-x64_bin.debInspect what was installed with:
dpkg -l | grep -i jdk
ls -ld /usr/lib/jvm/jdk-*-oracle-*The current catalog lists an x64 Debian package, not an aarch64 package. On an ARM64 VPS, use the matching aarch64 archive unless Oracle’s current catalog supplies a package for that architecture.

Run the repair command only after checking the package error and keep the downloaded .deb available for the repeat installation. A dependency repair does not replace the second dpkg -i step; verify that the Oracle package itself is configured afterward. Do not manually move package files out of /usr/lib/jvm, because that breaks the package’s recorded paths.
Make Oracle Java the Debian or Ubuntu default
A tarball does not automatically become the command returned by java. Register both the runtime and compiler with Debian’s alternatives system, using the real path:
sudo update-alternatives --install /usr/bin/java java /opt/oracle/jdk-current/bin/java 20000
sudo update-alternatives --install /usr/bin/javac javac /opt/oracle/jdk-current/bin/javac 20000
sudo update-alternatives --config java
sudo update-alternatives --config javacThe priority 20000 is an administrator-selected value; the important detail is that the registered target exists. At each --config prompt, select the Oracle path you intend applications to use. If you later install another JDK, repeat the selection because the default may change.
For a Debian package, inspect alternatives before adding entries. The package may already have registered java and javac:

update-alternatives --display javacUse --config only when the displayed selection is not the desired Oracle installation. Registering an obsolete path is a common failure after replacing a tarball directory; update the entry to the new stable symlink or release path.
Alternatives controls commands such as /usr/bin/java; it does not set JAVA_HOME for every process. Keep the alternatives choice, the shell variable, and each service’s executable aligned. A user may see Oracle Java through PATH while a service still launches a different absolute path.
Configure services explicitly
A user’s ~/.profile is normally not loaded by a non-interactive service. A daemon can therefore continue using an older JDK even when an interactive shell shows Oracle Java.
For systemd, set the environment and executable in the unit or an environment drop-in. A representative unit fragment is:

sudo systemctl status your-service.serviceCheck the service logs and its process command line if the application still reports an unexpected Java version. A successful shell test proves only the shell’s environment, not the environment of an already running process.
When using a drop-in, preserve any existing startup options and memory flags; changing only the Java path is safer than replacing the whole unit. After a symlink switch, restart every dependent daemon so its process no longer references the old directory. A running JVM does not change binaries merely because jdk-current now points elsewhere.

Verify the runtime, compiler, alternatives, and environment
Run every check below after installation and after switching versions:
java -version
javac -version
readlink -f "$(command -v java)"
update-alternatives --display java

JAVA_HOMEprintout catches an unset or stale variable, while the final command tests the JDK named by that variable directly.
For a daemon, perform an equivalent check inside the service context or inspect its logs after a restart. The selected path, version output, and application’s own startup message should agree.
If command -v java resolves to a user-managed path before /usr/bin, alternatives may be configured correctly while the shell still runs another binary. Inspect the complete PATH and test the absolute path shown by JAVA_HOME. Verify javac separately because selecting the runtime does not guarantee that the compiler selection changed too.
Update, switch, and roll back safely
Updating an archive installation
- Retrieve the current Oracle filename and SHA-256 value after accepting the license.
- Download and verify the new archive before extracting it.
- Extract the new release beside the existing directory, for example under
/opt/oracle. - Test the application against the new directory without deleting the old one.
- Move
/opt/oracle/jdk-currentto the tested release withln -sfn, or select the new alternatives entry. - Restart each service and verify its logs and Java path.
Keep the previous directory until every dependent service has been tested. Roll back by pointing the symlink at the previous release or choosing its alternatives entry, then restart the affected services.
Updating a Debian installation
Install the newer package with dpkg -i, inspect the alternatives entries, test the application, and select the desired version if Debian did not choose it automatically. Record the package name shown by dpkg -l before removing an older package. Use the package manager for removal so dependency metadata remains consistent.
Safe removal
Never delete an old archive directory while a service still references it. For a package installation, check package dependencies and the recorded package name before running a removal command. After removal, repeat the runtime, compiler, alternatives, and service checks.
Keep a rollback record containing the prior directory or package version, its checksum, the alternatives selection, and the services restarted. Oracle’s stable URL convention can simplify scripted retrieval, but the current filename and checksum should still be obtained for every update.

The download will not start
Oracle’s license must be accepted before the binary is downloadable. Return to the current downloads page, accept the agreement for the selected artifact, and copy the newly displayed filename rather than reusing an expired link.
Checksum mismatch
Confirm that the checksum belongs to the same architecture and exact filename. Redownload over HTTPS, calculate the digest again, and stop if it still differs. Do not extract or install an unverified file.
Exec format error or package architecture error
Compare uname -m with the artifact. Use Linux x64 for x86_64 and Linux aarch64 for aarch64/arm64. A 64-bit ARM server cannot run the x64 binary without an emulation strategy, which is outside this installation procedure.
java -version shows another JDK
Resolve the command with readlink -f "$(command -v java)", inspect update-alternatives --display java, and select or register the intended Oracle path. Also inspect PATH and JAVA_HOME; a shell path earlier than /usr/bin can bypass alternatives.

javac is missing
Verify that you installed a JDK archive or package rather than a runtime-only product, then register bin/javac with update-alternatives. Test with javac -version after selecting it.

The shell works but the service fails
Set an absolute JAVA_HOME, PATH, and Java executable in the service configuration. Reload the service manager, restart the daemon, and inspect its logs. Login profile files are not a reliable configuration source for system services.
The package is installed but no Oracle path appears
Check dpkg -l and list /usr/lib/jvm. If dpkg stopped on dependencies, complete apt-get -f install and rerun the exact package command. Do not create alternatives entries pointing to a directory that was never successfully extracted or configured.
Oracle Java versus OpenJDK on Ubuntu
Ubuntu’s official guidance says Oracle HotSpot and OpenJDK generally have no functional difference for most applications. OpenJDK is maintained in Ubuntu’s archive and has clearer licensing and support integration there. Manual Oracle installation is therefore a specific operational choice—such as a vendor requirement, a tested Oracle build, or a need to mirror an existing Oracle-based environment—not a universal performance requirement.
Whichever distribution you choose, keep one explicit source of truth for each application: its JAVA_HOME, executable path, and selected alternatives entry. Mixing a shell’s Java with a service’s Java is a more common operational problem than the archive-versus-package choice itself.

- Confirm the VPS is 64-bit and map its architecture to x64 or aarch64.
- Accept Oracle’s license and obtain the current filename and SHA-256 checksum.
- Choose tar.gz for a private, relocatable, or non-root installation; choose
.debfor a root-managed system-wide x64 installation. - Verify the archive or package before extracting or installing it.

Why does my service use a different Java than my shell?

Match the Oracle build to uname -m, accept the license, verify the SHA-256 checksum, and choose the route that fits your access and lifecycle needs. Use a tarball for a private or parallel installation, or the x64 .deb for package-managed system-wide files. Set JAVA_HOME explicitly, register both Java commands when necessary, configure services separately, and verify the runtime, compiler, alternatives path, and service environment before removing the previous JDK.
