Aim your weapon and activate Dead Eye, then mark targets and fire. Manual marking is not available at the start of Story Mode: it unlocks at Dead Eye Level 2 in Chapter 2. Until then, Dead Eye handles targeting differently, so the mark button may not work.

Dead Eye controls by platform

These are the default Story Mode controls. PC bindings can be remapped, so use the on-screen prompt if your active controls differ.

Platform Aim and activate Dead Eye Mark a target Fire
PlayStation Hold L2, then click R3 Press R1 Press R2
Xbox Hold LT, then click RS Press RB Press RT
PC (default) Right mouse button, then middle mouse button or Caps Lock Press Q Left mouse button

How to mark targets and fire

  1. Equip or draw a weapon and aim at your target.
  2. Activate Dead Eye using the input for your platform.
  3. After manual marking is unlocked, move the reticle onto the target or the body area you want to hit, then tap the mark control. On PC, the reticle changes color when a valid target is available.
  4. Repeat to mark additional targets if you want. The number of shots you can mark is limited by the ammunition loaded in your equipped weapon.
  5. Fire using the platform’s fire control. If you marked multiple targets, firing carries out the marked shots.

Why the manual mark button may not work

Manual marking is a Story Mode progression feature, not available from the beginning. It becomes available at Dead Eye Level 2 in Chapter 2. If you are earlier in the story, activate Dead Eye and use it without expecting to place marks manually; continue through the story until the upgrade unlocks.

If you have progressed far enough but the input still does nothing, confirm that Dead Eye is active and that the reticle is over a valid target. On PC, check your control settings for remapped bindings and follow the prompt shown on screen.

Story Mode and Red Dead Online differ

The chapter-based manual-marking unlock described here applies to Story Mode. Red Dead Online uses Dead Eye ability cards and does not follow the same Story Mode progression system, so these marking instructions should not be treated as a guide to Online’s Dead Eye abilities.
