How to Mass Transfer Pokémon in Pokémon GO Safely

To mass transfer Pokémon safely in Pokémon GO, open your Pokémon list from the Map View, narrow the list with search filters, press and hold one Pokémon to start multi-select, add the others, inspect the complete selection, and only then tap Transfer. The action is permanent: Niantic says, “you can’t get Pokémon back after you’ve transferred them.”

What mass transfer does—and why the final check matters

Mass transfer lets you send several eligible Pokémon to Professor Willow in one operation instead of opening each Pokémon separately. You receive Candy for transferred Pokémon, but the Pokémon themselves cannot be recovered. There is no undo step described in the official transfer guidance, so treat the Transfer button as a final deletion command rather than a temporary sorting action.

The safest approach is to separate the job into three phases: narrow the inventory, build the batch, and audit the selected Pokémon. Search filters reduce the number of candidates; they do not decide what you personally want to keep. Your final review remains necessary even when a search appears precise.

Before you start: define the job and the keep rules

A clear cleanup goal makes a safer batch. Decide whether you are reviewing a tag, ordinary duplicates, a recent catch group, or a particular category. Then decide what “keep” means for this batch. Your rule may involve a favorite marker, a tag, a Buddy relationship, a form, a move, a collection goal, or sentimental value. The game’s categories are useful safeguards, but they cannot represent every reason you might want to retain a Pokémon.

Do not begin selecting while still deciding what matters. If you discover halfway through that a certain form or move should be protected, stop and rebuild the candidate list. A deliberate restart is safer than trying to remember which cards were already tapped.

  • Mark important Pokémon as favorites before cleanup when that protection fits your system.
  • Use tags for projects such as trades, evolution candidates, raids, PvP, or collections.
  • Inspect an individual Pokémon whenever its name, form, move, or other detail affects your decision.
  • Leave uncertain Pokémon out of the batch. Freeing space can wait; a transfer cannot be reversed.

Prepare your inventory before selecting anything

Start from the Pokémon list

  1. From Map View, tap Main Menu.
  2. Tap Pokémon to open your inventory.
  3. Use the magnifying-glass search control before beginning a batch.

Beginning with a filtered list is safer than scrolling through your entire storage and tapping quickly. It also gives you a defined reason for the transfer, such as reviewing a tag, checking duplicate catches, or clearing a particular category.

Decide what is protected

Before searching, identify the Pokémon that must not leave your account. Your personal keep list may include more than the game’s protected categories. For example, you may want to retain a particular move set, size, costume, regional form, or sentimental catch. The documented search filters can identify several statuses, but they cannot know every personal reason you might have for keeping a Pokémon.

  • Check whether a Pokémon is a favorite before including it.
  • Check tags and any notes you use to mark raid, PvP, collection, or evolution candidates.
  • Look at individual details when a name, form, move, or other characteristic matters to you.
  • Do not assume that a Pokémon absent from a protected category is automatically disposable.

Use a small review group when possible

Large, mixed selections are harder to audit. If your list contains ordinary Pokémon alongside Legendary, Mythical, Shiny, Lucky, or Buddy-related entries, split the review into smaller groups. A narrow group makes it easier to notice an unexpected favorite, tag, or form and makes category restrictions easier to understand when the game prevents a batch.

Use Pokémon GO search filters as a review aid

Tap the magnifying glass in the Pokémon list and enter a search term. Pokémon GO supports combining search terms, which lets you narrow the visible candidates before you start multi-select. The official inventory guidance documents these useful categories:

Search or syntax What it helps you inspect
favorite Pokémon marked as favorites
shiny Shiny Pokémon
lucky Lucky Pokémon
legendary Legendary Pokémon
mythical Mythical Pokémon
buddy0 through buddy5 Buddy-level categories
# followed by a tag name Pokémon carrying that tag
! before a category Excludes a matching category; for example, !defender shows Pokémon that are not defending a Gym

Terms can be combined, so a search can focus your inspection on a narrower group. Use the exact spelling and symbols shown by the game’s search system. Filters are a way to create a manageable review list, not a guarantee that every result is safe to transfer. Continue to inspect the actual Pokémon cards and details in the proposed batch.

Examples of cautious searches

  • Use a tag search such as #trade to review Pokémon you have marked for trading, but verify that the tag means “safe to transfer” in your own system before selecting anything.
  • Use !defender when checking for Pokémon that are not currently defending a Gym. This can make a cleanup list easier to review, but it does not protect other categories such as favorites or shinies.
  • Use a special-category search such as shiny, lucky, legendary, or mythical as a deliberate inspection list. Those categories have transfer restrictions and are often collections rather than ordinary duplicates.
  • Use buddy0 through buddy5 to separate Buddy levels during review. A Buddy-level result is a classification aid, not permission to transfer every result.
  • Combine a tag with another category when you need to inspect an intersection, then verify that the returned cards actually match the meaning you assigned to the tag.

Do not promise yourself that one long expression catches every Pokémon you want to protect. Search syntax and the app interface can change, and your own keep rules may not be represented by a built-in category. If a search produces an unexpected result, clear it and inspect a simpler category rather than selecting from a list you do not understand.

How to create and send a batch

1. Select the first Pokémon

With the list narrowed to the group you want to review, press and hold the first Pokémon until selection mode begins. A normal tap opens that Pokémon’s detail screen; the press-and-hold gesture is what starts multi-select.

2. Add the other candidates

Tap each additional Pokémon you intend to include. Every tap adds that Pokémon to the current selection. Move deliberately rather than rapidly scrolling and tapping, because a single mistaken tap changes the batch. Pause after each screenful so you can keep track of where you are in the list.

  • COMPACT RESEALABLE PACKAGE: store your pack of Windex Gaming Wipes anywhere in your home for whenever a quick and easy wipedown is needed

3. Stop and audit the selection

Before committing, inspect the entire selected group. Compare the selected count with the number of Pokémon you meant to process, and look for any protected or personally important Pokémon that slipped in. Check the visible cards against your search purpose, then open individual details when a move, form, tag, or other characteristic matters.

If the selection is not exactly what you expect, remove the mistake or cancel the operation and start again rather than relying on memory. Rebuilding from a filtered list is especially sensible after accidental scrolling, a changed search term, or an interruption.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Tap Transfer only after the audit

When the selected group is correct and the game allows the operation, tap Transfer. The selected Pokémon are sent to Professor Willow, and Candy is awarded. The transfer cannot be undone, so do not tap the button merely to see what confirmation appears. Treat any confirmation prompt as the final point at which to stop and recheck.

Transfer restrictions you must account for

Some Pokémon cannot be included in a normal batch, while others require a setting or cannot be transferred together in multiples. These are eligibility rules, not a replacement for your own review.

Category What the official guidance says Safe handling
Active Buddy Your active Buddy cannot be transferred. Manage the Buddy relationship before attempting a transfer, then verify the Pokémon’s status again.
Favorited Pokémon Favorited Pokémon cannot be transferred. Use favorites as a protection marker, but still check the selection because not every Pokémon you want to keep is necessarily favorited.
Gym defenders Pokémon currently defending Gyms cannot be transferred. They are ineligible while defending; review your list again after their status changes if you still need to manage them.
Multiple Legendary Pokémon You must enable the relevant option in app settings before transferring multiple Legendary Pokémon at once. Enable the setting before building the batch, then perform the same full visual audit.
Multiple Mythical Pokémon You must enable the relevant option in app settings before transferring multiple Mythical Pokémon at once. Enable the setting before selection. Some Mythical Pokémon remain unavailable regardless of that setting.
Multiple Shiny Pokémon Multiple Shiny Pokémon cannot be transferred in one batch. Do not expect a shiny group to behave like an ordinary multi-select list; follow the game’s eligibility response for an individual Pokémon.
Multiple Lucky Pokémon Multiple Lucky Pokémon cannot be transferred in one batch. Review Lucky status before selecting more than one special Pokémon.
Good Buddy or higher Multiple Pokémon at Good Buddy status or higher cannot be transferred in one batch. Check Buddy levels before selecting a group; an active Buddy is separately ineligible.
Certain Legendary and Mythical Pokémon Some special Pokémon cannot be selected for transfer at all; the help guidance names Mew and Celebi as examples. If a Pokémon cannot be selected, do not try to bypass the restriction or infer that another copy is transferable.

Enabling multiple Legendary or Mythical transfers

The official guidance requires an option in the app’s settings before multiple Legendary or Mythical Pokémon can be transferred together. The exact placement or label can change as the app is updated, so open the current settings screen and look for the transfer-related confirmation option described there. Enable it before selecting the batch, not after you have already assembled a group.

Enabling that option does not make every special Pokémon transferable. It does not remove the blocks on multiple Shiny, Lucky, or Good Buddy-or-higher Pokémon, and it does not make named exceptions such as Mew or Celebi selectable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to interpret a blocked batch

If the game will not let you select a Pokémon or complete a group, treat that response as information about eligibility, not as a challenge to work around. Check whether the Pokémon is favorited, an active Buddy, or a Gym defender. Then check whether the batch contains a restricted special category or requires the settings option. If one Pokémon is an exception, remove it and reassess the remaining group instead of assuming the entire search result is safe.

A repeatable safety workflow

Routine storage cleanup

  1. Open Main Menu > Pokémon from Map View.
  2. Search for the tag or category you want to review.
  3. Read the visible list and identify the Pokémon that are genuinely expendable.
  4. Press and hold one candidate to enter multi-select.
  5. Add candidates one at a time, pausing when the list scrolls or changes.
  6. Check favorites, Buddy status, Gym status, tags, and any personal keep criteria.
  7. Compare the selected count with your intended count.
  8. Tap Transfer only when the batch matches your intended categories and you are certain it is permanent.

Cleaning up a large catch session

Do not select an entire recent-catch list simply because the Pokémon were caught together. Sort the list into smaller review groups, such as ordinary duplicates and special categories. A smaller batch makes it easier to notice a favorite, a tagged Pokémon, or a form you intended to keep. If a group contains Legendary, Mythical, Shiny, Lucky, or Good Buddy-or-higher Pokémon, expect the documented restrictions to affect how it can be handled.

For a particularly large cleanup, finish one clearly defined group before starting another. Reopen the search and verify that the results still describe the group you intend to review. This prevents an old selection plan from being applied to a new category after the list changes.

Working from tags

Tags can provide a useful human decision layer: one tag might mark trade candidates, another evolution projects, and another collection goals. Search the tag, inspect the results, and confirm what the tag means before selecting. A tag is only as reliable as the rule you used when applying it; it is not an automatic safety lock.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Handling mixed categories

A mixed search can contain Pokémon with different transfer rules. For example, a result may include ordinary Pokémon plus Legendary, Mythical, Shiny, Lucky, or high-level Buddy entries. Separate those categories before selecting so that a restriction on one group does not confuse your review of the others. The same separation also makes the final count easier to verify.

Common mistakes and what to do instead

Mistake: treating the transfer as reversible

There is no recovery step after transfer. If you are uncertain about one Pokémon, leave it out of the batch. Inventory space can be addressed later; a transferred Pokémon cannot be brought back.

Mistake: assuming a search result is a keep-or-delete verdict

Search terms classify or exclude categories. They do not evaluate moves, forms, personal memories, future plans, or collection goals. Use the result to reduce scrolling, then inspect each selected card.

Mistake: forgetting that restrictions can hide the real issue

A favorite, active Buddy, or Gym defender may be ineligible, while a personally important Pokémon that lacks one of those markers may remain selectable. Conversely, a special category may require a setting or may be blocked in multiples. Eligibility tells you whether the game accepts the batch; it does not tell you whether the batch is wise.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Mistake: selecting while distracted

Multi-select is a sequence of individual taps. If you lose track of which Pokémon you tapped, stop and rebuild the selection from a filtered list. Do not trust an approximate count when the consequence is permanent.

Mistake: expecting all special Pokémon to follow one rule

Legendary, Mythical, Shiny, Lucky, and Buddy-related restrictions are not interchangeable. Check the specific category in the restrictions table before creating a mixed batch.

Mistake: enabling a setting and skipping the review

The setting for multiple Legendary or Mythical transfers changes what the game permits; it does not identify which Pokémon you should send. After enabling it, repeat the same count check, favorite check, tag check, and personal keep-rule review.

Mistake: assuming an unselectable Pokémon is merely a duplicate

Some Legendary and Mythical Pokémon, including Mew and Celebi in the help guidance, cannot be selected for transfer at all. Leave them alone rather than treating the restriction as a temporary interface problem.

What happens after a successful transfer

Transferred Pokémon go to Professor Willow and produce Candy. They disappear from your inventory, and the same Pokémon cannot be recovered. If you later realize that a transferred Pokémon had a move, form, tag, or sentimental value you wanted to keep, the only practical prevention was the review performed before tapping Transfer.

Because the official pages describe the documented flow rather than every possible future interface change, button placement and wording may change between app versions. The core safety principle remains stable: filter first, select deliberately, verify the final group, and treat the confirmation as permanent.

Frequently asked questions

Can I undo a mass transfer?

No. Niantic’s guidance says that you cannot get Pokémon back after transferring them. If you are unsure about even one selected Pokémon, cancel or remove it before confirming.

How do I start multi-select?

From the Pokémon inventory, press and hold the first Pokémon until selection begins. Then tap each additional Pokémon you want in the batch.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I transfer multiple Legendary Pokémon?

Yes, the official guidance requires you to enable the relevant option in app settings first. The setting does not remove the need to inspect the final group, and some special Pokémon remain unavailable.

Can I transfer multiple Mythical Pokémon?

The same settings requirement applies to multiple Mythical Pokémon. Certain Mythical Pokémon, including Mew and Celebi as named examples, cannot be selected for transfer at all.

Why can’t I select multiple Shiny or Lucky Pokémon?

Multiple Shiny Pokémon and multiple Lucky Pokémon cannot be transferred in one batch. Handle the game’s eligibility response as a restriction rather than assuming that a search result can be sent together.

Can I transfer my active Buddy or a Gym defender?

No. Your active Buddy and Pokémon currently defending Gyms are ineligible for transfer. Favorited Pokémon are also protected from transfer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does a search filter guarantee that every result is safe to delete?

No. Searches such as favorite, shiny, lucky, legendary, mythical, Buddy-level terms, tags, and exclusions help narrow the list. They cannot account for every move, form, collection plan, or personal reason to keep a Pokémon.

Do transferred Pokémon give Candy?

Yes. The transferred Pokémon are sent to Professor Willow and you receive Candy, but the Pokémon themselves are permanently unavailable afterward.

Final pre-transfer checklist

  • Did I use a search or tag to make the candidate group easier to inspect?
  • Did I press and hold the first Pokémon, then add the rest individually?
  • Did I check favorites, Buddy status, Gym defenders, tags, and my own keep rules?
  • Did I inspect any move, form, or other detail that matters to my decision?
  • Does the selected count match the number I intended to send?
  • Does the batch contain Legendary or Mythical Pokémon requiring the settings option?
  • Does it contain multiple Shiny, Lucky, or Good Buddy-or-higher Pokémon that the game will block?
  • Is any named special Pokémon unselectable regardless of the setting?
  • Am I certain I will not need any selected Pokémon again?
