You need the Businesses & Hobbies Expansion Pack for the skill. Reading Pottery skill books can take a Sim only as far as level 9, while the official cheat can set the skill directly to level 10.
Fastest way to level Pottery: create ceramics on the Wheel
Buy the Pottery Wheel by GFAUB in Build Mode, then have your Sim use it to craft ceramics. EA identifies creating pottery as the quickest way to build the skill. The Pottery Kiln by GFAUB is for glazing a ceramic after it has been made; it is not the main crafting station. To glaze an item, put it in your Sim’s Personal Inventory first. You can leave ceramics unglazed or glaze them at the Kiln.

As skill levels rise, the Wheel unlocks more ceramic types. At level 7, Sims can also repair broken ceramics at the Wheel. At level 10, they unlock additional sculptures and the ability to apply Unbreakable Coating at the Kiln.

Other ways to build Pottery
Mold a Lump of Clay
Select Mold Clay on a Lump of Clay to build Pottery without using the Wheel. Children can build Pottery only by molding clay; they cannot use the Pottery Wheel or Kiln. Molding clay also builds a child Sim’s Creativity skill.

Read Pottery skill books
At a bookshelf, choose Purchase Books, select Skill in the category menu, and find one of the three Pottery volumes: Pottery Vol 1: From Blobs to Jobs, Pottery Vol 2: Earth, Fire, and Art, or Pottery Vol 3: Artistic Expression Through Ceramics. Reading is slower than making pottery and cannot raise the skill past level 9. If you own Jungle Adventure, the Peace and Quiet Lot Trait helps Sims build skill faster while reading skill books.
Attend a skill class
With Discover University, use the Sim’s phone and open the Business app, then choose Sit in on Skill Class (§250) and select Pottery. The Sim leaves the lot and gains Pottery during the class. Classes are available from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Learn, teach, or find a mentor
With Businesses & Hobbies, Sims can learn or teach Pottery using the Sharing is Caring Whiteboard. From level 5, a Sim can mentor another Sim at the Pottery Wheel or Kiln. Hobby meetups are another way to find a mentor.
Use Nordhaven community pottery equipment
If you do not want to put pottery equipment on your home lot, EA lists two Nordhaven locations where Sims can use it:

Set Pottery to level 10 with a cheat
EA documents the skill command stats.set_skill_level major_pottery [skill level]. Replace the bracketed text with 10 to set Pottery to its maximum level.
- Open the cheat dialog. On PC or Mac, press Control + Shift + C. On PlayStation, press R1 + R2 + L1 + L2 together. On Xbox, press RB + RT + LB + LT together.

What Pottery adds to a Sim’s business
Finished ceramics can be used to decorate a lot, gifted, or sold at a small business. The skill and pottery equipment are part of The Sims 4 Businesses & Hobbies Expansion Pack, which EA announced for launch on March 6, 2025.
