How to Measure FPS Gains From a GPU Driver Update With Reliable Benchmarks

By VGSources Team 10 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no universal FPS increase for a GPU driver update. The only dependable answer comes from a controlled before-and-after test: keep the game, scene, settings, operating-system state, power behavior and capture method unchanged; repeat the run; and compare frame-time distributions as well as headline FPS. A higher average is not a clean win if displayed frames become less consistent or dropped presents increase.

What a driver benchmark can—and cannot—tell you

Graphics drivers can change shader compilation, game-specific optimizations, scheduling, synchronization and power behavior. The effect depends on the exact GPU, driver pair, game build, API, scene and settings. A result from one game is evidence about that workload, not a forecast for every title installed on the system.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Official documentation for NVIDIA FrameView defines separate rendered and displayed measurements, while its release notes explain that newer reporting counts dropped and zero-display presents. Those details matter because an average calculated only from rendered work can look better even when the monitor receives frames less regularly. The consulted official material defines the measurements and reporting behavior but does not establish a single FPS-gain percentage that applies to all driver updates.

  • Upscaling technology, quality mode and sharpening settings.
  • Frame generation state, V-Sync state and any in-game or driver frame cap.
  • Save file, benchmark scene, route and camera movement.
  • Driver version, GPU profile settings and capture-tool version.

Do not change resolution, upscaling quality or frame generation between the two conditions. A driver test that changes those variables measures a settings change, not a driver change.

Control background activity

Reboot before the baseline, allow startup activity to settle, and close downloads, browsers, recording software, overlays, RGB utilities and scheduled scans when practical. Keep the same services running in both conditions if they cannot be disabled. A background process that appears only after the update can widen the run-to-run spread and obscure a small driver effect.

Control thermal and power state

Use the same power plan, laptop AC state, fan profile and GPU profile for every run. Do not compare a cold first run against a thermally stabilized post-update run. If the game changes clocks as it warms up, use a defined warm-up period before starting the measured interval.

Choose a capture method that records frame times

FrameView for repeatable logs

NVIDIA describes FrameView as an application for measuring frame rates, frame times, power and performance-per-watt across graphics cards and APIs. It can display a configurable overlay and write logs using PresentMon-based analytics. For a driver comparison, logging is more useful than copying a single number from an overlay because the raw file preserves the full run.

FrameView distinguishes Rendered FPS and MsBetweenPresents from Displayed FPS and MsBetweenDisplayChangeActual. Rendered timing is sampled near the beginning of the graphics pipeline. Displayed timing is sampled at the end of the path and is closer to what reaches the screen. Record both when the capture setup supports them.

Percentiles expose slow frames

A percentile frame-time value is the threshold below which a specified percentage of frames falls. Because frame time is measured in milliseconds, a lower value is faster. Percentiles reveal a slow tail that an average can hide. Use the tool’s 1% low or equivalent low-percentile FPS together with frame-time percentiles, rather than treating the average as the entire result.

GPUView for difficult cases

Microsoft’s GPUView is an ETW-based diagnostic tool that displays GPU and CPU activity, driver events, command-buffer timing and synchronization intervals from trace logs. It is not necessary for every comparison, but it is valuable when identical runs disagree or when the average improves while presentation becomes erratic.

Capture the old-driver baseline

  1. Reboot and settle the system. Start from the same boot state that you will use after the update. Wait for normal startup activity to finish.
  2. Launch the identical game state. Use the same save, benchmark path, API and graphics settings. Avoid changing menus or camera movement during the capture.
  3. Apply a predefined warm-up. Let shaders, textures and streaming settle for the period you selected before testing. If the game compiles shaders on the first visit, record that behavior explicitly.
  4. Run the fixed capture interval. Start and stop logging at the same points every time. Do not end a run early because the overlay looks good or bad.
  5. Repeat the route. Make several valid runs and save every raw log. A practical protocol is at least three valid runs per driver; five gives a safer estimate when streaming, simulation or background activity causes visible variation.
  6. Record anomalies. Note a stutter, shader compilation event, menu transition, crash or other departure from the route. Decide in advance whether such a run is excluded and apply that rule to both driver versions.

The baseline is not a screenshot. It is a distribution of repeated observations made under a documented test matrix.

Install the new driver without adding a confounder

  1. Close monitoring and overlay utilities before launching the installer.
  2. Install the selected driver using the same installation policy you intend to report. If you use a clean installation, document that choice.
  3. Reboot when installation finishes.
  4. Verify the GPU profile, resolution, refresh rate, power mode, frame cap, V-Sync, HDR and game settings. Driver installation can reset one or more of them.
  5. Confirm that the game build and capture-tool version are unchanged.

NVIDIA warns that a running monitoring application can interfere with driver installation or leave a lower power target that reduces performance. Closing those utilities removes a failure mode that can otherwise be mistaken for a slower driver.

Repeat exactly the same sequence after the update

Use the same reboot-and-settle routine, save file, route, warm-up, capture duration, run count and run order. Do not use a new graphics preset because the new driver appears to support it. If shader compilation or asset streaming affected the baseline, either warm it up in both conditions or exclude the affected first run according to the rule you wrote before testing.

Keep the raw logs from both conditions in separate, clearly named folders. Include the driver version, date, game build and capture-tool version in each filename or accompanying note so another person can reconstruct the comparison.

How many runs are enough?

No fixed run count makes every result reliable. A stable built-in benchmark may converge after three valid runs, while an open-world route with streaming or a CPU-limited simulation may need five or more. The important test is whether the direction and size of the change remain similar when one run is removed.

  • Three runs per condition: a minimum practical protocol for a stable, deterministic scene.
  • Five runs per condition: preferable when frame-time tails vary or the game streams assets.
  • More runs: justified when the old and new distributions overlap heavily or when a small change matters to the conclusion.

Do not average invalid runs into the result. Keep them in the archive with a reason for exclusion so the decision is auditable. If the old-driver and new-driver results alternate between faster and slower from run to run, describe the outcome as noisy rather than selecting the most favorable run.

Summarize the logs, not an anecdote

Use the same statistic on both sides of the comparison. Do not compare an old mean with a new median, or a rendered value with a displayed value. A useful results table has one row for every valid run and separate columns for the following measurements:

Measurement What it tells you How to interpret it
Mean FPS Average throughput over the capture interval Useful for overall speed, but sensitive to unusually fast or slow sections
Median FPS Middle observation after ordering frame samples Less affected by extreme samples than the mean
1% low or equivalent low-percentile FPS Performance near the slow tail Lower values can expose hitching hidden by the average
Frame-time percentile Milliseconds below which a selected percentage of frames falls Lower is better; inspect high-percentile values for slow-frame tails
Rendered FPS and frame time Work completed near the start of the pipeline Shows what the engine and driver produced
Displayed FPS and frame time Frames that reached the display path Closer to the timing a player actually sees
Dropped or zero-display presents Frames that were not displayed normally An increase can indicate worse pacing even if rendered FPS rises
Run-to-run range Difference between the fastest and slowest valid run Provides a practical noise estimate for the scene

FrameView 2.0 changed FPS reporting to count dropped and zero-display presents, improving its description of stutter, 1% lows and 10% highs. Because of that reporting change, averages can move slightly even when the underlying workload is unchanged. Do not mix logs from materially different capture-tool reporting versions without noting the difference.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Calculate the change transparently

For any FPS statistic, use:

percent change = (new value - old value) / old value × 100

Report both the absolute difference in FPS and the percentage. For example, the table should show the old mean, new mean, the difference in FPS and the resulting percentage, followed by the same fields for median FPS and the low-percentile metric. Use matched statistics and matched metric locations: displayed-to-displayed or rendered-to-rendered.

Frame time requires separate interpretation. A reduction from a higher millisecond value to a lower one is an improvement, even though the arithmetic sign of a simple percentage calculation may look different from an FPS increase. State the direction in words so readers cannot mistake a lower latency value for a regression.

Decide whether the gain is credible

Classify the result using three checks:

  1. Direction: most valid runs move in the same direction for the statistic you care about.
  2. Magnitude: the change is larger than the ordinary run-to-run spread in that scene.
  3. Frame pacing: displayed timing, low-percentile results and dropped-display indicators do not worsen materially.

A clean improvement raises the chosen throughput metric, repeats across runs and leaves the slow tail no worse. A mixed result has a higher mean but a lower displayed 1% low, longer high-percentile frame times or more dropped presents. A null result has differences that remain inside normal run-to-run noise. A regression lowers the matched metric or worsens pacing across repeated runs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not turn a one-run peak into a promised FPS gain. If the distributions overlap and the direction changes when one run is removed, report that the test could not separate the driver effect from measurement noise.

Why average FPS can rise while the game feels stutterier

Rendered work improved but display delivery did not

A driver can reduce time spent producing frames while synchronization, queueing or presentation still delays what reaches the panel. Compare rendered and displayed timing. If rendered FPS rises but displayed FPS or displayed percentiles worsen, the player-facing result is a pacing regression or mixed result.

Dropped and zero-display presents increased

A displayed-frame count that includes dropped or zero-display presents can reveal interruptions that a simple rendered average hides. Inspect those indicators and the high-percentile frame-time tail instead of relying on the mean.

The scene is CPU-limited or background work changed

If GPU utilization, command-buffer timing or CPU activity changes between runs, the driver may not be the limiting factor. Recheck background processes, power mode and the exact route. An ETW trace can show CPU saturation or scheduling activity that a frame-rate overlay cannot explain.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Shader compilation or streaming was not symmetric

A first-run compilation hitch or asset-streaming stall can depress one condition. Apply the same warm-up and exclusion rule to both driver versions, then rerun the affected sequence.

Escalate noisy results with GPUView

When repeated runs disagree, collect an ETW trace around the same reproduction path and inspect it in GPUView. The diagnostic workflow is:

  1. Start an ETW capture with the graphics and system providers required for the investigation.
  2. Reproduce the same benchmark route, including the event that creates the hitch.
  3. Stop the trace immediately after the fixed interval and save it with the driver and game identifiers.
  4. Open the trace in GPUView and compare CPU activity, GPU work, driver events, command-buffer timing and synchronization intervals.
  5. Match a visible hitch to the trace interval, then repeat after changing only the suspected variable.

Use the trace to investigate CPU saturation, GPU bubbles, scheduling changes, synchronization delays or background activity. GPUView explains timing relationships; it does not replace the controlled before-and-after logs.

Choose the right comparison scope

Comparison axis Narrow test Broader test
Metric location Rendered pipeline timing Rendered and displayed timing together
Summary statistic Mean FPS Mean, median, low-percentile FPS and frame-time percentiles
Repeatability One run or anecdotal play Repeated runs with spread and exclusion rules
Workload coverage One scene in one game Several games, APIs, engines and GPU-limited scenes
Confounder control Settings checked informally Written matrix, warm-up, power state and background-process controls
Diagnostic depth Overlay or log comparison ETW capture and GPUView for unresolved variance

Use the narrow test when you need a quick answer for one game and scene. Use the broader design when you intend to generalize the finding beyond that workload; every additional game or API is another controlled experiment, not a substitute for repeatability within the original scene.

What a reproducible report should include

Publish the conditions alongside the result so another reader can reproduce it:

  • GPU and CPU models, system RAM and Windows build.
  • Old and new driver versions, installation method and reboot procedure.
  • Game build, graphics API, save file or benchmark route.
  • Resolution, refresh rate, HDR, preset, ray tracing, upscaling, frame generation, V-Sync and frame cap.
  • Warm-up rule, capture duration, run count and excluded-run criteria.
  • Capture-tool name and version, including whether displayed metrics were available.
  • Per-run raw logs and a table of mean, median, low-percentile FPS, frame-time percentiles, displayed metrics and dropped-display indicators.
  • Absolute and percentage changes calculated from matched statistics.
  • Any background activity, thermal issue, shader compilation or streaming event that could affect interpretation.

The final verdict should say whether the change is a repeatable improvement, a pacing regression, a mixed result or indistinguishable from noise. That wording is more useful than a single rounded FPS headline because it tells readers what they can expect on screen.
