A safe move is a controlled rebuild: recreate the application on a second Coolify instance, deploy it behind a temporary domain, migrate every stateful dependency with the method appropriate to its type, freeze writes for a final synchronization, then switch the production domain and DNS. Keep the original server intact until the new deployment has passed production checks.

What actually moves during a Coolify migration
A Coolify application consists of more than its container image or Git repository. Configuration, secrets, persistent files, databases, queues, object storage, webhooks and DNS all have separate owners and failure modes. Treat the migration as two related projects:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Application rebuild: reproduce the source, branch, build settings, commands, ports, environment variables, mounts, health checks, schedules and domains on the destination.
- State transfer and cutover: copy database records, uploaded files and other external state, verify the destination, then route users to it.
Do not decommission the source after the first successful deploy. The source is your rollback point while you validate data, integrations and TLS on the destination.
Control-plane backup is not an application backup
A Coolify instance backup restores the Coolify control-plane database: projects, resources, settings, saved credentials and deployment history. It does not restore data inside deployed applications, databases, services or persistent volumes. The saved APP_KEY is required to decrypt restored credentials. A machine move may also require the SSH material in /data/coolify/ssh/keys/ and the relevant ~/.ssh/authorized_keys file.

Use an instance backup to preserve Coolify’s management metadata, not as a substitute for application backups. Application volume and database data are not part of an instance backup.
Clone is useful for configuration, not for migration
Coolify’s clone operation creates a new, stopped application with copied configuration and storage definitions. It does not copy the contents of Docker volumes, bind mounts, directories, databases or external services, and it cannot move an application between separate Coolify instances. You still need to recreate the application on the destination and transfer its state independently.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Step 1: Inventory the source before changing anything
Create a written inventory that another operator could use to reproduce the service. Capture the following from the source Coolify dashboard, repository and infrastructure:
- Deployment method: Git repository and commit or branch, Docker image and tag, build pack, Dockerfile, build command, start command and release command.
- Runtime details: exposed and internal ports, health-check path and interval, container user, CPU or memory limits, restart behavior and proxy settings.
- Configuration: every environment variable, secret, shared variable, build argument and production-only override. Mark which values must change on the destination.
- Storage: named Docker volumes, bind mounts, directory mounts, Coolify-managed file mounts and the exact path inside each container.
- Traffic: production and preview domains, redirects, certificates, proxy rules and any hard-coded callback or API URLs.
- Operations: scheduled tasks, queue workers, cron expressions, webhooks, deployment triggers, monitoring checks and backup jobs.
- External state: each database, cache, queue, object-storage bucket, managed service, OAuth application, payment or webhook endpoint and email provider.
Record the size and approximate change rate of databases and upload directories. That information determines the transfer method and the length of the final write-freeze window.
Step 2: Prepare and validate the destination server
Install or select the destination Coolify instance and verify it before copying production data.
- Confirm SSH access for the account Coolify will use and test that the account can read and write the required storage paths.
- Check available CPU, memory and disk space against the source workload, including headroom for database imports, image layers and temporary archives.
- Verify the reverse proxy, firewall and required inbound ports. Confirm that the destination can reach the Git provider, container registry, package mirrors and every external API the application uses.
- Recreate private keys, Git integrations, registry authentication, S3-compatible destinations and shared variables in the destination dashboard. Credentials stored in the source control plane do not automatically appear in a new instance.
- Prepare a temporary hostname whose DNS points to the destination, or use another isolated test hostname. Do not point the production hostname at the new server yet.
Use non-production credentials and, where practical, a separate test database or a read-only copy during the first deployment. This prevents a configuration mistake from writing test traffic into production systems.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Step 3: Recreate, deploy and test the application shell
- Create a new project and application on the destination using the same source type and deployment method as the original.
- Enter the recorded branch, image tag, build settings, commands, environment variables, internal port, health check and mounts. Use the temporary domain and non-production secrets.
- Deploy and inspect the build and runtime logs. Confirm that the intended commit or image digest—not merely the latest available tag—was deployed.
- Open the temporary domain and test a health endpoint, authentication flow, a representative read, outbound network access, static assets and error logging.
- Verify that workers and scheduled tasks are disabled or pointed at non-production dependencies until the final cutover. Running both source and destination workers against one queue or database can duplicate jobs.
Do not import the final production database until this shell is healthy. A working container with the wrong port, missing secret or broken callback is harder to diagnose after data has been added.

Step 4: Move state according to its type
Choose a transfer method for each dependency. A single application may require several methods.
| State | Recommended method | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Supported relational or document database | Database-aware logical dump and restore using the database’s supported tools | Do not treat a live Docker-volume copy as a consistent backup |
| Docker named volume containing application files | Stop writes, archive the volume, transfer the archive, and extract it into a destination volume | Preserve ownership, permissions and the expected mount path |
| Bind mount or directory | Copy the exact host path with metadata preserved | The destination path and container mapping must match |
| Coolify-managed file mount | Recreate the mount in the destination dashboard, then restore its contents | A scheduled storage archive can be downloaded but the dashboard does not restore storage archives |
| Object storage, queue, cache or managed service | Use that provider’s supported replication, export or backup process | Application configuration alone does not copy external state |
Databases: use logical backups
For PostgreSQL, MySQL, MariaDB, MongoDB and other supported engines, create a logical export with the engine’s backup utility, transfer it securely, create the destination database with compatible version and collation settings, and restore the dump. Validate users, extensions, indexes, sequences, time zones and permissions after import.
Coolify documents these persistent locations for common services:
Recommended Free Tools
| Service | Documented persistent path | Version note |
|---|---|---|
| PostgreSQL | /var/lib/postgresql/data |
Before version 18 |
| PostgreSQL | /var/lib/postgresql |
Version 18 and later |
| MySQL or MariaDB | /var/lib/mysql |
Path documented by Coolify |
| MongoDB | /data/db and /data/configdb |
Both paths may contain persistent data |
| Redis, Dragonfly or KeyDB | /data |
Path documented by Coolify |
| ClickHouse | /var/lib/clickhouse |
Path documented by Coolify |
These paths identify persistent storage; they are not database-aware backups. Coolify specifically warns against copying a running database’s Docker volume as a substitute for a logical backup because live files can be internally inconsistent or unusable.
Named volumes and bind mounts
For a named Docker volume, first stop the source application or otherwise guarantee that no process can write to the volume. Archive the volume contents, transfer the archive over an authenticated channel, create the destination volume, extract the archive there and verify ownership and permissions. Mount it in the destination application at the same container path.
For a bind mount or directory, copy the exact host directory recursively while preserving mode bits, user and group ownership, symbolic links and timestamps where those affect the application. Recreate the host path on the destination and confirm that the container user can read and write it. Copying only visible files while omitting hidden files, ACLs or symlink targets is a common cause of missing uploads and broken configuration.
Coolify-managed storage archives
If you use a scheduled storage-mount backup, download the resulting .tar.gz archive before migration. The Coolify dashboard can create the archive but does not restore storage archives for you; extraction into the correctly recreated destination mount is required.

External object storage, queues and caches
Buckets, queues, caches and managed databases are outside the application container. Follow each provider’s supported export, replication or restore process, then change the destination environment variables to the restored endpoint. For caches, decide whether warm data is necessary; many applications can start with an empty cache, while queues usually require preserving unprocessed jobs and consumer offsets.
Step 5: Perform a final synchronization
The final sync is the only point at which you should copy data that changed during testing.
- Announce a maintenance window and stop user writes. Put the source application in maintenance mode or stop it completely; disable workers, cron jobs and webhooks that can create new records.
- Create a final database dump using the database’s logical backup tool. Record its timestamp and checksum.
- Copy files changed since the initial transfer, or repeat the file archive if that is safer. Include uploads, generated documents and any application-managed directories.
- Restore the final database dump and file set on the destination. Apply final production environment variables, mounts and external-service credentials.
- Redeploy or restart the destination so every process opens the final configuration. Confirm that only the destination workers and scheduled tasks are active.
Keep the source stopped after this point. Starting both versions against shared production state can create duplicate jobs or divergent writes.
Step 6: Validate through the temporary domain
Before changing DNS, exercise the destination as if it were live:
- Sign in as an administrator and an ordinary user.
- Read existing records, create a test record and verify that updates persist in the destination database.
- Upload, download and delete representative files; check size limits, content types and generated thumbnails.
- Run a background job and inspect worker logs for retries, duplicate processing and permission errors.
- Send a test email and verify the From address, links and delivery status.
- Complete OAuth login and webhook callbacks using temporary or destination callback URLs.
- Check API integrations, payment callbacks, search indexing, monitoring probes and scheduled tasks.
- Review application, proxy and database logs for connection failures, migration errors, 404 responses and certificate warnings.
Step 7: Switch the production domain and DNS
- Add the production domain to the destination application in Coolify while leaving the source stopped.
- Confirm that the proxy selects the destination application and that a certificate is issued for the production hostname.
- Change the relevant DNS A or AAAA record, or the CNAME, to the destination server. DNS propagation is resolver-dependent, so keep the source available but stopped during the transition.
- Test from more than one network and resolver. Verify HTTP-to-HTTPS redirects, the certificate name and expiration, IPv4 and IPv6 behavior, and any www or apex-domain redirect.
- Watch access and error logs as traffic arrives. Confirm that login, writes, uploads, email and callbacks still reach the destination.
DNS rollback only changes where new requests go. It does not merge records or files written to the destination after cutover.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Step 8: Reconnect automation and observability
Once traffic is stable, update every system that still references the old server:
- Git webhooks and CI/CD secrets.
- Registry credentials and image-pull tokens.
- Scheduled tasks, worker supervisors and external cron triggers.
- Monitoring, alerting, uptime checks and log destinations.
- OAuth redirect URLs, webhook endpoints and callback allowlists.
- Backup destinations, S3-compatible credentials and retention jobs.
Trigger a test deployment and one scheduled or background operation. Confirm stable logs, expected records, successful backups and valid TLS before removing the old infrastructure.

Rollback planning and the data problem
Retain the source server unchanged and keep the final database dump, file archive and checksums for a defined rollback period. If the destination fails before accepting writes, stop it and point DNS back to the source. If users have already written to the destination, a DNS change alone loses those writes. You must export the destination’s new records and files, reconcile them with the source, and restore a deliberate point-in-time state before reopening the old application.
Document who can authorize rollback, which hostname is authoritative, where the final backups are stored and how to disable destination workers. An optional portable external SSD can carry downloaded archives and an offline rollback copy, but it is not a replacement for encrypted off-site backups.
Migration approaches compared
| Approach | What it preserves | Where it falls short | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rebuild plus logical backups and file transfer | Application configuration, database records and files when each is migrated explicitly | Requires an inventory, a write-freeze window and manual integration checks | Moving an application between Coolify instances or servers |
| Coolify instance backup restore | Projects, resources, settings, saved credentials and deployment history; requires APP_KEY for encrypted credentials |
Does not include application databases, volumes or deployed data | Moving Coolify’s control plane on a compatible machine |
| Coolify clone | Application configuration and storage definitions in a new stopped application | Does not copy volume, bind-mount, database or external-service contents and does not cross Coolify instances | Creating a configuration copy on the same instance |
| Raw live-volume copy | Potentially copies files quickly | Database files can be inconsistent or unusable; no application-level validation | Not suitable as the database migration method |
Common failure modes and fixes
The container starts but the app cannot connect to its database
Check destination hostnames, ports, credentials, TLS settings, firewall rules and whether the database restore created the expected user and permissions. Do not assume the source container name or private network exists on the new server.
Uploads return permission denied
Compare the destination mount path, directory ownership, group ID and mode bits with the source. Confirm that the runtime user—not just the SSH account—can write the directory.
Login or OAuth works on the temporary host but fails after cutover
Update allowed callback URLs, cookie domains, trusted origins and reverse-proxy HTTPS settings to include the production hostname. Reissue or rotate secrets only after recording the destination values.
Jobs run twice
Ensure the source workers and cron jobs are stopped before enabling destination workers. Check external schedulers and webhooks that may still target the old endpoint.
TLS is valid for the wrong hostname
Confirm the production domain is attached to the destination application, DNS resolves to the destination, ports 80 and 443 reach the proxy, and certificate issuance is not blocked by stale records.
DNS rollback appears successful but data is missing
DNS cannot merge divergent databases or files. Preserve destination writes, export them, and perform an explicit reconciliation before returning users to the source.
