How to Migrate a Unity Project to Godot or Unreal Engine

By VGSources Team 13 min read

There is no one-click Unity-to-Godot or Unity-to-Unreal conversion. A reliable migration is a staged rebuild: freeze the Unity project, export reusable source assets, create a clean destination project, port a representative vertical slice, then recreate and test each system. Meshes, textures, animation files, audio, fonts, video and authored data can often move with cleanup; Unity scenes, prefabs, materials, import settings, scripts, editor tools and most packages are engine-specific.

What a Unity migration actually involves

Think of the move as two parallel jobs. The first is asset reuse: preserving the original files and bringing compatible versions into the new engine. The second is behavioral reconstruction: expressing the project’s scenes, object relationships, rendering, input, saves and services through a different engine architecture.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

A Unity project is not just a folder of interchangeable files. A scene stores GameObjects and components; prefabs encode Unity-specific serialization; materials and shaders depend on Unity’s rendering pipeline; import settings affect the runtime representation; and scripts call Unity APIs. Moving those files without rebuilding their dependencies can produce an editor full of apparently present assets but a game that does not run correctly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep the Unity build reproducible until the destination project passes acceptance tests. It remains your behavioral reference for visual comparisons, gameplay paths and save-data checks. Only archive it after you have documented intentional differences and can reproduce the target build.

What can transfer, and what cannot

Epic’s Unity-to-Unreal migration guidance maps common source formats to Unreal asset types. The same source files are often useful to Godot, but every importer, material and animation still needs verification.

Unity source or content Likely destination treatment Important qualification
Meshes Unreal Static Mesh or Skeletal Mesh; imported mesh files can also be used in Godot Check scale, axis orientation, pivots, tangents, material slots and collision after import.
Mesh interchange formats FBX or OBJ Re-export when the original export contains incorrect transforms, normals or material assignments.
Skeletal meshes USD is listed for Unreal skeletal-mesh interchange Confirm skeleton hierarchy, bind pose and root-motion expectations in the destination engine.
Animation files FBX, OBJ or ABC for Unreal workflows Animation clips and controllers are not the same thing; rebuild state machines and transitions.
Textures Common image formats Recheck color space, channel packing, compression, mipmaps and normal-map interpretation.
Audio WAV, OGG, FLAC, AIF, OPUS or MP3 Verify sample rate, streaming settings, loop points, spatialization and platform compression.
Fonts, videos and authored data Preserve the original source files and import them through the destination pipeline Recreate references, serialization and runtime loading code.
Unity scenes and prefabs Rebuilt as Godot scenes and nodes, or Unreal levels, Actors and Components There is no destination-engine equivalent that preserves Unity behavior automatically.
Unity C# and Bolt scripts Rewritten as Godot scripts, Unreal Blueprints or Unreal C++ Epic states that Unity C# scripts and Bolt scripting files cannot be directly exported from Unity and imported to Unreal Engine.
Unity materials, shaders and import settings Recreated with destination-engine materials, shaders and importer settings Visual parity requires deliberate reconstruction and comparison, not a file copy.
Packages, native SDKs and editor extensions Replaced, custom-ported or removed Audit each dependency; assume engine-specific packages need a new implementation.

A .unitypackage is a Unity distribution container. It packages collections of Unity project assets, but it is not a Godot or Unreal project format. Use it to preserve or move content within Unity, not as your migration interchange. Export source textures, meshes, audio and authored data separately whenever possible.

Decide between Godot and Unreal before porting

Choose Godot when the project can be reorganized around scenes and nodes

Godot’s scene tree and node files are the central unit of composition. A Unity GameObject with components does not map one-to-one to a Godot object. During the port, decide which nodes own data, behavior, transforms, animation and presentation, then save reusable combinations as scenes that can be nested or inherited. This visible reorganization is usually the largest conceptual change for a Unity team.

Expect API-level script rewrites. Input, physics, animation playback, UI, resource loading and scene instantiation all need Godot implementations. Recreate materials and shaders in Godot’s rendering model, and verify every imported asset rather than assuming Unity’s importer decisions carry over.

Choose Unreal when its level, Actor and Component model fits the project

Unreal organizes project content in the Content Browser. Unity scenes generally become Unreal levels; GameObjects become Actors; and component behavior becomes Actor Components or components attached to Actors. Establish those ownership rules before importing a large library, or you will spend the migration correcting inconsistent hierarchies.

Gameplay can be rebuilt in Blueprints, C++ or a combination. Neither Unity C# nor Bolt behavior imports directly. Unreal’s documented interchange paths make common meshes, animations, textures and audio practical to reuse, but materials, gameplay logic, UI, saves, networking and platform services still require new work.

Use risk, not habit, as the deciding factor

  • Lower-risk profile: a small, mostly data-driven project using standard meshes, textures, audio and uncomplicated gameplay.
  • Higher-risk profile: a project tied to a proprietary render pipeline, custom editor extensions, native plugins, multiplayer services, platform SDKs or complex shader graphs.
  • Decision test: list every Unity package and native integration, then identify its destination replacement or port plan before committing the whole project.

Prepare an inventory and freeze the Unity reference

Start with a written inventory, not an export. Record the exact Unity version, packages and package versions, plugins, build targets, source-control state, licenses, native integrations and external services. Include every scene, prefab, script, shader, animation controller, save format and platform-specific configuration.

  • Record which scenes are shipped, which prefabs are runtime-created and which assets are loaded dynamically.
  • List input actions, physics layers, tags, sorting rules, render settings, quality levels and build profiles.
  • Document save slots, serialized data versions, online services, analytics, authentication, achievements, notifications and entitlement checks.
  • Capture the current behavior with repeatable test paths: boot, menu navigation, one representative level, combat or interaction, save/load, pause, resolution changes and quit/restart.

After the inventory, freeze the Unity reference. Fix only issues that would prevent comparison or source extraction, and record each change. Preserve the project in source control so a later comparison is against a known state rather than a moving target.

Separate source assets from Unity engine state

Create a source archive that contains the highest-quality files you own: original textures, meshes, audio, fonts, videos and authored data. Preserve layered art and uncompressed masters when available. Keep generated thumbnails, imported caches and platform build output separate so they are not mistaken for portable source.

For each asset family, add the metadata needed to reproduce its appearance:

  • Meshes: units, forward axis, up axis, pivot conventions, smoothing, normals, tangents, skeleton and intended collision.
  • Textures: intended color space, packed channels, normal-map convention, alpha meaning, target resolution and compression expectations.
  • Animation: frame rate, clip boundaries, loop flags, additive layers, root-motion policy and skeleton naming.
  • Audio: sample rate, channel layout, loop points, dialogue language and whether a clip is streamed or loaded into memory.
  • Authored data: schema version, identifiers, references and whether values are serialized by name, path or numeric ID.

Do not treat Unity’s imported representation as your only copy. Changing a source file or its import settings causes Unity to re-import it; retaining the original source lets you make an equivalent decision in the new engine.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Build a representative vertical slice first

Select one playable scene that exercises the systems most likely to expose migration risk. It should include representative rendering, input, animation, UI, audio, save/load and at least one external dependency. A menu-only sample or a scene containing static geometry will not reveal problems in physics, animation state, persistence or platform services.

The slice is a decision gate. Migrate it far enough to answer these questions:

  • Can the destination engine reproduce the required camera, lighting, materials and post-processing style?
  • Can a player complete the core interaction with equivalent input and collision behavior?
  • Can animation transitions, root motion, audio timing and UI state be recreated?
  • Can the project save, reload and migrate its data without losing identifiers or progress?
  • Can the external SDK or service be replaced, ported or isolated behind a new interface?
  • Can the target build package and run on every required platform?

If the slice reveals an unacceptable dependency, resolve that before bulk import. A failed vertical slice is inexpensive; discovering the same incompatibility after every scene has been rebuilt is not.

Create a clean destination project

Do not drag the Unity project directory into Godot or Unreal. Create a new project and establish its conventions first.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Set the project identity and build targets. Configure application identifiers, target platforms, debug and release profiles, window or display behavior and source-control integration.
  2. Define the folder and naming scheme. Separate scenes or levels, reusable actors or nodes, scripts, materials, textures, meshes, animation, audio, UI, data and tests.
  3. Choose coordinate and unit conventions. Document up axis, forward direction, world units, gravity, scale conversion, camera conventions and whether transforms are authored in local or world space.
  4. Recreate input actions. Name actions by intent rather than by a physical key, then map keyboard, mouse, controller and touch bindings required by the project.
  5. Establish render and quality profiles. Decide lighting, shadow, transparency, post-processing, texture limits, anti-aliasing and scalability settings before judging visual parity.
  6. Create a test harness. Add a known scene, deterministic spawn points, debug logging and a way to reset saves so each import can be compared consistently.

This foundation prevents imported assets from encoding accidental assumptions and gives every later port a stable target.

Import and normalize assets

Meshes and transforms

Import a small batch first and compare dimensions against a known Unity object. Check axis orientation, unit scale, pivots, smoothing groups, normals, tangents, skin weights, skeleton hierarchy and material slots. Test a mesh at its intended gameplay scale, not only in an editor preview. Re-export when an FBX or OBJ contains transforms, normals or material assignments that do not survive import.

Generate or assign collision deliberately. Unity collider settings do not become equivalent destination collision automatically, and a visually correct mesh can still produce different movement, raycast or physics results.

Textures and materials

Verify whether each image is color data, a normal map, a mask or packed channels. Recreate sRGB or linear interpretation, channel swizzles, mipmaps, filtering, wrap modes, compression and alpha handling. Then rebuild the destination material and compare roughness, metallic response, normal intensity, transparency, emission and two-sided rendering under the same lighting conditions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not assume a Unity shader graph or custom shader has a matching destination implementation. Rewrite shader logic and validate edge cases such as cutout foliage, decals, depth testing, screen-space effects and platform-specific variants.

Animation and audio

Check animation clip timing, frame rate, loop boundaries, additive behavior, retargeting, root motion and event callbacks. A destination animation asset may play while the state machine, transition conditions or code-driven events remain missing. For audio, verify sample rate, loop points, attenuation, spatialization, streaming and compression on the target platform.

Translate Unity structure into the destination engine

Godot: GameObjects and prefabs become scenes and nodes

Begin with a node taxonomy. A reusable player scene might contain a root node for movement, a collision body, a visual child, an animation player, a camera and UI or audio children. The important decision is ownership: movement code should not depend on arbitrary visual children, and UI should receive state through a defined interface rather than searching the entire tree.

Convert prefabs into reusable scene files. Nest scenes for composition and use inheritance only where a stable base truly reduces duplication. Replace Unity references with Godot resource paths or explicit exported references, then test what happens when a scene is instanced multiple times.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Unreal: scenes and GameObjects become levels, Actors and Components

Map each Unity scene to a level or a deliberate set of level assets. Use Actors for world objects and compose reusable behavior through Components. Place shared assets in the Content Browser according to the folder convention established at project creation. Decide which objects are placed, spawned at runtime or managed by a subsystem; this choice affects replication, save data and lifetime.

Recreate prefabs as reusable Actor Blueprints or C++ classes, but avoid copying a Unity hierarchy mechanically. Expose only the properties designers need, define ownership and initialization order, and test an instance both when placed in a level and when spawned during play.

Rebuild behavior in dependency order

Port systems in an order that minimizes temporary work and makes failures diagnosable:

  1. Data model. Recreate definitions, identifiers, defaults, localization keys and serialization schemas. Decide how old saves are detected and migrated.
  2. Core loop. Implement game states, spawning, win or loss conditions, pause and restart before adding polish.
  3. Input and movement. Port action mapping, acceleration, gravity, jump rules, collision queries and camera-relative controls.
  4. Camera and interaction. Rebuild raycasts, focus, prompts, pickup or use rules and camera constraints.
  5. UI. Recreate navigation, focus, localization, scaling, controller support, accessibility behavior and transitions.
  6. Animation. Rebuild controllers or state machines, blend rules, events, IK and root-motion handling.
  7. AI and simulation. Port perception, navigation, decision logic, timers and deterministic assumptions.
  8. Saves and loading. Write and read destination data, preserve versioning and test interrupted or missing data.
  9. Networking and platform services. Reconnect authentication, matchmaking, entitlements, achievements, cloud saves and notifications through destination-compatible SDKs.
  10. Editor tooling. Replace custom inspectors, import processors, level tools and build scripts with destination-editor equivalents or standalone utilities.

Keep the old and new implementations conceptually separate. A compatibility layer can help preserve game data or service interfaces, but it should not hide engine-specific assumptions that will make debugging harder.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
Area What to compare Typical migration failure
Transforms Position, rotation, scale, pivots and parent-child inheritance Objects are rotated, oversized or offset because axes or units differ.
Collision and physics Contacts, layers or channels, gravity, friction, triggers and raycasts Movement feels different or interactions fire at the wrong time.
Animation Clip timing, blending, events, root motion and transitions Characters slide, snap, loop incorrectly or lose event-driven effects.
Rendering Materials, lighting, shadows, transparency, post-processing and color Assets look washed out, too dark, opaque or visually inconsistent.
Audio Trigger timing, loop points, attenuation, priority and mixing Sounds start late, loop badly or have incorrect spatial volume.
Input Keyboard, mouse, controller, touch, rebinding and focus behavior Actions work on one device but not another, or UI consumes gameplay input.
Persistence New game, save, load, corrupted data, version upgrade and reset References break because destination paths or identifiers differ.
Performance Frame time, memory, loading, shader compilation and streaming A visually similar build misses performance or memory targets.
Packaging Install, launch, updates, permissions and platform services Editor play works while the packaged build cannot find data or initialize an SDK.

Automate what can be deterministic: scene loading, object counts, save round trips, input sequences and basic performance budgets. Keep a human visual pass for lighting, animation feel, UI layout and audio mix. Record every intentional difference so a later bug is not dismissed as an expected migration change.

Common failure modes and recovery steps

Bulk import creates an unmanageable project

Symptom: thousands of assets arrive with inconsistent folders, duplicate materials and unclear ownership. Recovery: return to the clean project, import only the vertical slice, define naming and folder rules, then migrate in feature-sized batches.

The scene looks right but gameplay is wrong

Symptom: geometry renders, but movement, collisions, triggers or camera behavior differ. Recovery: compare coordinate conventions, collider geometry, physics layers or channels, update order, fixed-step assumptions and local-versus-world transforms before touching visual assets.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Materials import with the wrong appearance

Symptom: textures are present but surfaces are too bright, too dark, shiny, flat or opaque. Recovery: inspect color space, packed channels, normal-map interpretation, alpha mode, shader parameters and lighting. Rebuild the material instead of repeatedly changing texture files.

Scripts or visual logic are treated as portable

Symptom: copied C# or Bolt files do not compile or execute. Recovery: keep the original code as a behavior specification, then implement destination APIs and write tests for each externally visible rule. Unreal requires Blueprints or C++; Godot requires scripts written against its scene and node APIs.

Plugins block the project

Symptom: a Unity SDK has no destination package or fails on a target platform. Recovery: isolate the service behind an interface, confirm an official destination SDK, commission a native port, or remove the feature with a documented product decision. Do this during the vertical slice, not after all gameplay is complete.

Save files stop loading

Symptom: new games work but existing progress disappears or references resolve to the wrong object. Recovery: define stable identifiers independent of Unity asset paths, version the schema, write an importer for old data and test upgrades from representative save states.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Editor performance looks fine but the build does not

Symptom: packaged loading, memory or frame time is unacceptable. Recovery: profile the packaged target, inspect texture and audio compression, streaming, shader compilation, draw calls, allocations and level-loading boundaries. Validate on every required platform rather than relying on desktop editor results.

Cut over only after acceptance

Define acceptance before declaring the migration complete. The target should pass the vertical-slice path, all required platform builds, save compatibility tests, input-device checks, performance and memory checks, and service initialization tests. Compare representative screenshots or captures under documented settings, but do not use visual similarity as a substitute for behavior.

Keep the Unity build reproducible while defects are triaged. When the destination passes, tag the final Unity reference, archive source and licenses, publish the destination project conventions, and document every intentional behavior, visual or data-format change. This gives the team a defensible point of comparison if a regression appears after cutover.

The practical answer to the conversion questions

  • Can a Unity project be converted automatically? Not as a complete playable project. Automation can help with file export or repetitive asset preparation, but structure, materials, scripts, packages and testing remain engine-specific work.
  • Can Unity assets be used in Godot? Source meshes, textures, audio, fonts, videos and authored data often can, after importer and material checks. Unity scenes, prefabs, scripts and import settings must be recreated.
  • Can Unity assets be used in Unreal? Unreal documents common interchange paths for meshes, animations, textures and audio. Those files still need normalization, and Unity behavior does not come with them.
  • Will Unity C# run in Godot or Unreal? No direct runtime import should be expected. Rewrite behavior against the destination APIs; in Unreal use Blueprints, C++ or both.
  • What is the safest first move? Freeze and inventory the Unity project, then migrate one representative vertical slice before choosing a bulk-import strategy.
