The scheduled event and the encoder are separate: YouTube Studio handles the event and connection credentials; a process on your VPS must supply the ongoing audio and video.
What moves—and what stays on YouTube
Your YouTube live event can remain scheduled or be reused while you replace the machine sending its feed. The VPS runs the encoder and reads the playlist; scheduling an event alone does not play or loop your media. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions explain how to enter the Live server URL and stream key in an encoder.
Plan for a brief interruption during cutover unless your specific setup supports a tested handoff. Do not start competing encoders against the same event: confirm the new feed first, then stop the old one.
1. Inventory the existing stream
Before changing servers, record the parts you will need to reproduce:

- Every media file, its playlist order, and whether audio or video comes from a separate input.
- The playlist format and any repeat, shuffle, or transition behavior you rely on.
- The encoder and its settings, including input paths, output format, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval where applicable.
- The YouTube event you intend to use and where its server URL and stream key are configured.
- How the current encoder starts at boot, stays running, logs output, and is monitored.
Confirm that you have the rights needed to broadcast every item in the playlist. Keep the old VPS and its files intact until the replacement has passed the checks below.
2. Prepare the replacement VPS
Transfer files and verify access
Copy the authorized media, playlist files, and relevant encoder configuration to the new host. Update paths for the new filesystem and set permissions so the account that runs the encoder can read every input. Test the playlist locally or with a short encoder run before attempting the live cutover.

Match the workload to the actual stream
There is no universal VPS size established for this migration. Requirements depend on the source files, output settings, whether the encoder can pass through compatible media or must transcode, the media library’s storage needs, and sustained network use. Check the existing stream’s codecs and settings, then choose a host that can sustain that workload rather than relying on a generic CPU or bandwidth figure.
Choose a playlist-driven encoder workflow
For unattended Linux operation, FFmpeg can read playlist inputs and send the feed to YouTube. One published Ubuntu example uses local files, an FFmpeg concat-demuxer list, a dedicated service account, and systemd; its paths and commands are examples to adapt, not universal defaults. A graphical encoder such as OBS may be more suitable when you need visual scene controls, but it can require a graphical VPS environment. Choose based on playlist control, automation and restart behavior, interface needs, and the host’s encoding capacity—not an assumed reliability or cost advantage.

3. Connect the new encoder to the YouTube event
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or reuse the scheduled stream you intend to broadcast.
- Copy the event’s Live server URL and stream key into the new encoder’s configuration. Use the values for the intended event, and verify that the encoder is set to send the expected video and audio.
- Store the stream key as a secret. Do not put it in a public repository, screenshot, or ordinary log, and do not use a literal key shown in an example configuration.
If the key is exposed, use YouTube Live Control Room to generate a new one, then update the VPS configuration. See YouTube’s live stream settings guidance for managing stream settings and keys. Keep in mind that a scheduled event is not the feed: the encoder still has to run and send it.
4. Run the encoder under supervision
On a headless Linux VPS, use a service manager such as systemd to start the encoder at boot and handle a process failure. Adapt the service user, file paths, environment, logs, and restart policy to your setup. Confirm that the service can read the media and its secret configuration without exposing the key in logs.

After enabling the service, check both sides of the connection: the service and encoder logs on the VPS, and incoming stream health in YouTube Studio. A running process is not proof that viewers are receiving correct video and audio.
5. Test, cut over, and retire the old host
- Start the new encoder and confirm YouTube reports an incoming stream for the intended event.
- Check that both video and audio are present and that the playlist begins with the expected item.
- Observe enough playback to confirm that ordering and looping work as intended, and watch for errors in the encoder logs and YouTube’s stream-health view.
- Once the new path is validated, stop the encoder on the old VPS so it cannot compete with the replacement feed.
- Keep the old host available until you are satisfied the new stream is stable; only then remove its service and files according to your retention needs.
Common migration problems
