Keep blue intact until the stabilization period ends.
Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with full root access, unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbps port and a 14-day free trial.
The application itself is only one part of the move. Database writes, files and object data, queues, scheduled jobs, certificates, secrets, connection pools, DNS caches, and third-party callbacks must all be included in the cutover and rollback plan.

What a minimal-downtime migration actually requires
A server migration is a coordinated change to compute, software, data, networking, and operations. “Minimal downtime” does not mean that every connection remains open. Existing connections can be dropped during database promotion or routing changes; the goal is to make the interruption short, predictable, and recoverable.
In the blue-green model, blue is the current production environment and green is the fully prepared replacement. Blue continues handling normal traffic while green receives the application deployment, configuration, certificates, dependencies, monitoring, and a continuously updated copy of the state. At cutover, writes are briefly drained or stopped, the last changes are applied to green, and a proxy, load balancer, service-discovery record, or DNS record sends new traffic to it.

Do not promise a universal outage duration. The final window depends on replication lag, long-running transactions, active DDL, connection behavior, routing, and workload. A migration can be near-instant for one stack and materially longer for another.
Choose the migration pattern before building anything
The right pattern depends on how much duplicate capacity you can fund, how precisely you control traffic, whether the database can replicate between environments, and how quickly you must reverse the change.
| Pattern | Final write-freeze | State and replication burden | Rollback and routing | Best fit and principal risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Blue-green | Short and predictable when synchronization is complete | Requires a second environment and automated or native replication | Fast traffic reversal through a proxy or load balancer; DNS reversal is less precise | Production migrations that need full pre-cutover testing; duplicate infrastructure and state handling are required |
| Canary or progressive routing | Often a gradual transition rather than one freeze | Requires reliable traffic splitting, session handling, and detailed observability | Rollback can remove the small traffic share first | Useful when reducing blast radius matters more than a single atomic switch; bad routing or weak telemetry can hide failures |
| Rolling replacement | May avoid a single freeze | Mixed versions run together; schema and session compatibility are harder | Rollback is less atomic because old and new instances coexist | Lower duplicate capacity; unsuitable when versions cannot safely share a database or session store |
| DNS-only move | Depends on resolver and client caching | Simple at the infrastructure layer, but application state still needs its own migration | Timing is imprecise because cached records and long-lived connections persist | Low-cost, simple topologies; weaker control than a proxy or load-balancer switch |
HashiCorp identifies blue-green, canary, and rolling replacement as zero-downtime deployment patterns and advises consulting database-specific documentation. “Zero downtime” in that description is a deployment goal, not a guarantee that a particular application will have no dropped connections or write pause.
Inventory the application and define the cutover contract
Before provisioning green, create a complete dependency map. A missing item discovered during the final window is a common cause of an extended outage.
Record software and infrastructure
- Application build, runtime, operating-system image, package versions, database engine and version, and any native libraries.
- Environment variables, secrets, encryption keys, certificates, certificate chains, trust stores, and their expiry dates.
- Compute size, storage type and capacity, network segments, firewall rules, identity and access policies, service accounts, and private endpoints.
- Reverse proxies, load balancers, service-discovery records, DNS names, health checks, connection limits, and client keep-alive settings.
- Cron jobs, scheduled workers, queue consumers, report generators, maintenance tasks, and any process that can write to shared state.
- Local files, shared filesystems, object storage, uploads, generated assets, caches, and temporary data that users expect to survive the move.
- External integrations: payment or identity providers, webhooks, game-platform callbacks, email, analytics, allowlisted IP addresses, and partner API credentials.
Choose the migration boundary
Document whether this is a same-platform move, a cross-region move, or a cross-cloud move. That choice controls which native replication, change-data-capture, storage-copy, and identity options are compatible. Also record the source and target time zones, network latency, compliance boundaries, and the maximum acceptable replication lag.

Set go/no-go metrics
Write the cutover contract before the change window begins. It should state the maximum approved lag, acceptable error rate and latency, queue-depth limits, smoke-test results, backup confirmation, and the person authorized to call a rollback. Define how long green must remain stable before blue can be dismantled.

Provision an equivalent target
Green can use newer compute or a deliberately upgraded runtime, but every difference must be intentional and tested. Recreate storage, network routes, firewall rules, identity permissions, monitoring, alerting, and resource limits. Treat the environment as code or use another repeatable deployment method so that a rebuild does not depend on undocumented manual steps.
Deploy the complete application stack
Install the application and its dependencies, load configuration and secrets, install certificates, create scheduled jobs, configure workers and queues, and register health checks. Keep jobs that must run only once—such as billing, match settlement, or report generation—disabled or fenced until ownership is transferred. A second active scheduler can duplicate work even when HTTP traffic has switched correctly.
Make names and endpoints portable
Remove hard-coded server addresses. Use configuration or service discovery for database hosts, object storage, queues, callback URLs, and internal services. Confirm that outbound allowlists and inbound webhook destinations recognize green before cutover; otherwise the new server may appear healthy while external events silently fail.
Move database and file state continuously
Seed before the change window
Copy the initial database contents and file or object data while blue serves traffic. Validate the copy with row counts, checksums, object manifests, or application-level reconciliation where those checks are appropriate. A successful database replica does not imply that uploads, generated assets, or local files are present.

Enable continuous replication
Use the database engine’s native replication feature or a compatible change-data-capture tool to keep green current. Microsoft’s Cloud Adoption Framework describes the sequence as configuring native replication between the source and target, verifying synchronization and health, monitoring lag, copying files, stopping new transactions, and then updating DNS, load balancers, and application configuration.
Monitor replication state rather than assuming that a connected replica is caught up. Alert on stopped replication, increasing lag, rejected changes, disk pressure, schema errors, and network interruptions. AWS advises confirming that the green database is healthy and caught up before switchover; for Microsoft’s near-zero-downtime sequence, do not proceed until lag is zero.
Keep schemas compatible with both environments
Blue and green may run concurrently, so deploy database changes using an expand-and-contract pattern. First add structures that both versions can tolerate, then deploy code that can read and write both forms, backfill or migrate data, and remove the old structure only after blue is no longer a rollback target. AWS specifically recommends replication-compatible schema changes for blue-green deployments.
Do not combine an irreversible schema change with the server switch unless you have a tested data-recovery plan. An active DDL statement or a long-running transaction can delay the final synchronization and extend the write freeze.

- Queue publication and consumption, retry behavior, dead-letter handling, worker ownership, and scheduled jobs.
- Reports, exports, search, background processing, and integrations that depend on callbacks or fixed IP addresses.
- Performance under expected concurrency, database connection limits, memory pressure, and autoscaling behavior.
- Logs, metrics, traces, alerts, dashboards, and on-call access. A signal that is absent on green is an operational defect, not a cosmetic difference.
Test reconnect behavior explicitly. Database promotion or a routing change can terminate existing connections, and clients must retry against the new endpoint without duplicating a write.
Cut over with a controlled runbook
Use one incident commander and named owners for application, database, networking, and communications. The following sequence keeps the irreversible decisions late.
- Select and announce the window. Choose the lowest-traffic period, notify operators and stakeholders, freeze unrelated releases, and confirm who can approve go or no-go.
- Confirm recovery readiness. Verify recent backups, test that restoration procedures are available, check that blue is healthy, and record the current replication position and key application metrics.
- Lower DNS TTL in advance if DNS will switch. This affects future resolver caching; it cannot evict records already cached by clients. A proxy or load balancer gives more precise control.
- Check green health and lag. Confirm replication is running, the target database is healthy, files and objects are present, certificates are valid, and all go/no-go metrics are inside their limits.
- Drain or quiesce traffic. Stop accepting new sessions where possible, let in-flight requests finish, and place the application in maintenance or read-only mode if that is safer than allowing writes during the handoff.
- Stop new writes and finish replication. Quiesce workers that can write, wait for long-running transactions to finish or terminate them according to the runbook, apply the final changes, and verify the target is current. Microsoft’s sequence calls for zero lag before proceeding.
- Promote green and update routing. Change the load balancer, reverse proxy, service-discovery record, or DNS record. Ensure health checks point to green and that new connections cannot continue writing to blue.
- Run immediate smoke tests. Exercise authentication, a representative read and write, uploads, queues, and a critical external callback. Confirm that the response comes from green and that database reads and writes land in the intended target.
- Watch live telemetry. Inspect error rate, latency, saturation, queue depth, worker health, replication state, logs, traces, and callback success. Compare with the baseline recorded before the switch.
- Announce success or invoke the predefined rollback path. Keep blue intact during the stabilization period. Do not decommission it immediately after the first successful smoke test.
Client-side caching can defeat a DNS change. AWS warns that clients with a longer cache can continue sending writes to blue after switchover, so the old environment must be protected against unintended writes and monitored until traffic has drained.

| Traffic-control method | What it controls well | What can undermine the handoff |
|---|---|---|
| Load balancer or reverse proxy | Immediate traffic direction, health-based removal, and controlled draining | Existing keep-alive connections, application-level caches, or a second untracked entry point can bypass the switch |
| Service discovery | Internal clients that resolve the service name through the same registry | Client-side caching, hard-coded addresses, and services that do not honor health state |
| DNS | Simple public endpoint changes with little additional infrastructure | Resolver and client caches, long-lived connections, and imprecise rollback timing |
| Progressive routing | Blast-radius control by sending a measured share to green | Session affinity, uneven traffic, incomplete metrics, and writes that cannot safely be split |
When the application has stateful sessions, either use a shared session store that both versions can safely read or ensure that routing keeps a user on a compatible endpoint during the transition. Do not assume that a DNS change alone moves an already-open connection.

After green has accepted writes
Blue may now be stale. Pointing traffic back to it can lose new data or create divergent histories. The rollback decision must specify whether to restore green data into blue, reconcile changes, reverse replication, or fail forward on green. Choose the method according to the database engine and the business value of each write; do not improvise during an incident.
Protect both environments during the decision
- Stop unintended writes to whichever environment is not authoritative.
- Preserve logs, replication positions, backups, and audit records.
- Communicate whether the system is read-only, degraded, or fully available.
- Keep the incident commander in charge of the single source of truth for routing and database ownership.
Rollback is not automatically safer than fail-forward once data has changed. The correct choice is the one that preserves a consistent, recoverable data set.

Diagnose the failure modes that extend an outage
| Symptom | Likely cause | Prevention or response |
|---|---|---|
| Green is behind at cutover | Replication lag, stopped capture, rejected changes, network limits, or disk pressure | Alert on lag and replication health; delay the switch until the agreed threshold is met and the target is verified |
| Writes appear on blue after the switch | Stale DNS, long-lived connections, pinned connection pools, or an untracked endpoint | Use a proxy when possible, drain connections, protect blue from writes, and monitor source attribution |
| Application errors after promotion | Missing secrets, certificates, permissions, environment variables, or hard-coded hostnames | Run a configuration diff and full-stack rehearsal; verify external allowlists and callback URLs |
| Duplicate or missing background work | Both blue and green schedulers or queue consumers remained active, or queue state was not replicated | Assign worker ownership explicitly and test retries, leases, and dead-letter behavior |
| Final sync takes too long | Long-running transactions, active DDL, or a large unreplicated file set | Measure these in rehearsal, schedule around them, and quiesce writers before the final copy |
| Rollback loses or duplicates data | Green accepted writes and blue was not current | Use the preapproved reconciliation or restoration plan; do not simply repoint traffic |
| External events disappear | Third-party callback still targets blue, or green’s address is not allowlisted | Test callbacks before cutover and verify delivery and authentication immediately afterward |
What published timing figures do—and do not—tell you
Service-specific documentation provides bounded examples, not a universal migration benchmark:
- Amazon RDS blue-green switchover: AWS documents a configurable timeout from 30 seconds to 3,600 seconds (one hour), with a 300-second default. This is a control for that service’s switchover process, not a promise that every application will be unavailable for that duration.
- RDS DNS behavior: AWS states that the default TTL for its RDS DNS zones is five seconds and warns against client configurations that increase the effective cache during switchover. Application clients and resolvers can still behave differently.
- Cloud SQL Enterprise: Google Cloud documents downtime typically under 60 seconds for its blue-green switchover, depending on workload and replication lag. That figure is service-specific and must not be generalized to arbitrary servers or architectures.
No independent, universal statistic establishes an “average application migration downtime.” Estimate your own window from measured replication catch-up, transaction-drain time, route propagation, connection recycling, and smoke-test duration.
Stabilize and close the migration
After the switch, keep the old environment available for the agreed stabilization period rather than deleting it as soon as the first request succeeds. Continue checking:
- New connections and writes land only on green.
- Error rate, latency, saturation, queue depth, worker health, and database health remain within the go/no-go limits.
- Uploads, callbacks, scheduled work, reports, and authentication continue to complete.
- Replication or reconciliation records show no unexplained divergence.
- Backups now cover green and a restoration test is scheduled or completed.
Only after the stabilization criteria are met should you remove temporary routing rules, restore normal DNS TTL policy, retire blue, and update documentation. Preserve the migration record, final configuration, metrics, and rollback decision so the next change starts with an accurate inventory.
A compact decision checklist
- Can the database and file/object state be replicated continuously to green?
- Can blue and green run simultaneously with a backward-compatible schema?
- Do you control traffic through a proxy, load balancer, or service registry, or must you rely on DNS?
- Have you tested sessions, reconnects, queues, workers, scheduled jobs, uploads, and third-party callbacks?
- Is replication at the agreed lag threshold, preferably zero for the final handoff?
- Who can call go, no-go, rollback, or fail-forward, and what exact metrics drive that decision?
- What happens to data written after green becomes authoritative?
If the answers are not documented and tested, the migration is not ready for a production cutover, regardless of how quickly the new server can be provisioned.
