Azure Media Services (AMS) was retired on June 30, 2024. Moving a workload to Ant Media Server is a rebuild and migration project, not an automatic conversion: Ant Media’s published guidance describes deployment patterns, but does not establish one-to-one compatibility for AMS resources, APIs, jobs, or endpoints. Start by inventorying what your workflows actually do, map each requirement to a target component, then pilot and cut over in stages.

What changes when you move from Azure Media Services to Ant Media Server?

Microsoft’s lifecycle listing gives June 30, 2024 as the AMS retirement date. Ant Media Server is a candidate streaming engine for selected workflows and can be deployed in cloud or on-premises environments. That does not make it a drop-in replacement for every AMS service.

Ant Media’s migration article is a high-level introduction, not a feature-by-feature conversion manual. The available guidance does not show that existing AMS accounts, assets, encoding jobs, APIs, or endpoints can be converted automatically. Treat the project as a workflow redesign: some functions may move to Ant Media, while storage, delivery, protection, or other responsibilities may need separate components.

What should you inventory before choosing a target design?

Record the complete workflow, including legacy functions that can be retired rather than rebuilt. For each item, identify its current owner, dependencies, and whether it is required for launch.

  • Content and storage: stored assets, asset locations, retention needs, and how applications find or retrieve content.
  • Ingest: live sources, protocols, publishing clients, and any ingest automation.
  • Processing: encoding jobs, presets, output renditions, and quality requirements.
  • Packaging and playback: output formats, playback clients, supported devices, and latency or startup expectations.
  • Protection and access: authentication, token handling, content protection, and any access rules.
  • Delivery: CDN or other delivery arrangements, routing, and expected traffic patterns.
  • Application dependencies: AMS APIs, SDKs, endpoints, webhooks, and code that publishes or plays streams.
  • Operations: monitoring, alerting, automation, recovery procedures, and who owns each task.

For each workflow, also note expected publisher and viewer concurrency, resilience needs, and what an acceptable recovery looks like. These details determine the target design; there is no universal sizing answer without a workload profile.

How do you map AMS requirements to a new design?

Create a requirement-to-component map before implementation. Mark a capability as confirmed only when the chosen Ant Media edition and release, or another named component, has been verified to meet it. Put gaps and unresolved dependencies in the plan rather than assuming feature parity.

Workflow area What to decide What to validate
Live ingest Which sources and protocols must publish to the new system? Publisher compatibility, authentication, connection recovery, and the required latency.
Encoding and outputs Which processing and output profiles are essential? That the target produces the required quality and playback formats; do not assume AMS job presets transfer.
Playback and delivery Which clients, formats, and delivery components remain in scope? Playback across representative devices, startup behavior, load, and delivery dependencies.
Protection and APIs Which access controls, application interfaces, and automation are must-haves? Authentication and token flows, API behavior, and any required replacement for existing AMS integrations.
Operations Who monitors, scales, and recovers the target? Alerts, failure response, scaling behavior, and ownership in the operational runbook.

The researched guidance does not establish an authoritative, universal equivalency table for AMS encoding, protection, packaging, APIs, or delivery. Map those requirements against your actual workload and the specific Ant Media release and edition you intend to deploy.

How do you plan an Ant Media deployment on Azure?

Ant Media’s Azure cluster guide documents a design using Origin and Edge scale sets, MongoDB, and Application Gateway. Its deployment-choice guidance points readers to the cluster guide as a starting point and describes ARM-template scaling for production automation and scale-out.

  1. Choose the architecture against requirements. Decide whether the documented cluster pattern fits your resilience, traffic, and operational needs. Do not select a topology or size from generic figures; size against measured or expected publisher and viewer concurrency.
  2. Confirm the deployment approach. Use the cluster instructions to understand the documented Azure layout. Evaluate ARM-template scaling where production automation and scale-out are required.
  3. Verify release and edition details. Confirm that the selected Ant Media edition and version support the protocols and deployment features your workflow needs.
  4. Assign component ownership. Document who manages Ant Media, Azure infrastructure, databases, delivery components, monitoring, and incident response.

The documented architecture is a deployment pattern, not proof that it meets every workload’s availability or performance needs. Validate those needs in a pilot.

What application changes should you expect?

Plan for changes to publish and playback flows, endpoints, authentication or token handling, automation, and operational tooling where the current implementation depends on AMS. Ant Media lists SDKs for JavaScript, Android, iOS, React Native, Flutter, and Unity, along with a REST API. Those integration options do not establish compatibility with AMS APIs or guarantee that existing client code will work unchanged.

What is one documented ingest and playback path?

Ant Media’s SRT guide describes pushing SRT streams with OBS or FFmpeg, playback through WebRTC, HLS, or CMAF, and MP4 recording. The guide identifies SRT ingest as available in Enterprise Edition starting with version 2.4.3, and ARM architecture support starting with version 2.6.0. Check release-specific compatibility before relying on these details in an implementation.

This is one documented pathway, not evidence that every AMS ingest, packaging, or recording workflow has a direct equivalent.

How should you pilot and cut over?

Pilot representative workflows

If both live and on-demand workflows are in scope, pilot at least one representative example of each. Test ingest, processing, playback on target devices, access controls, recording or asset handling, failure recovery, monitoring, and expected peak load. Compare latency, quality, startup time, and operational recovery with the requirements you recorded before selecting a target.

Move in stages with a rollback plan

  1. Run the new workflow in a controlled environment and confirm that its observable behavior meets your acceptance criteria.
  2. Move content or traffic in stages, with a named owner and rollback trigger for each stage.
  3. Keep relevant old-workflow configuration and data available for the agreed transition period, subject to actual availability and contractual constraints.
  4. Update runbooks, monitoring, and application configuration as each workload moves.

Do not promise zero downtime or automatic asset and API migration unless you have demonstrated it for the specific workload. The migration guidance does not establish either outcome.

What can go wrong during migration?

  • A required AMS function has no confirmed target. Return to the requirement map, identify an Ant Media feature or another component that can meet it, and test that choice before cutover.
  • An application still calls AMS endpoints or APIs. Trace the failing publish, playback, or management flow, update the integration for the selected target, and test it with the intended SDK or API.
  • A protocol or output does not behave as expected. Check the Ant Media edition and version against the required ingest and playback formats, then validate the workflow with the actual publisher and client.
  • Scaling or recovery misses operational requirements. Revisit the concurrency and resilience assumptions, exercise failure and scale scenarios in the pilot, and adjust the architecture and runbooks before moving more traffic.
  • Costs cannot be compared reliably. Build an estimate from the selected Ant Media licensing, Azure compute, network and storage, and any remaining third-party services. Current prices and a workload profile are not established here, so a responsible total-cost figure cannot be supplied.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your actual need is simply to keep uploaded videos looping as a 24/7 YouTube live stream, that is a narrower job than replacing Azure Media Services. StreamNeo is a separate option for that use case: upload a recording or playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It runs in the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home; uploaded video streams at its original quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot; and it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or start the free first day.
