The safest Apache-to-Nginx migration is a controlled configuration translation, not a package swap. Inventory every Apache site and dependency, install Nginx alongside it, convert each VirtualHost into a Nginx server block, validate with sudo nginx -t, and move traffic only after HTTP, HTTPS, application routes, uploads, logs, and certificate renewal have passed checks.

You can either replace Apache in one cutover or run Nginx as the public reverse proxy while Apache remains on an internal port. The second approach reduces rollback risk for applications that still depend on Apache behavior.

Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Choose a migration strategy before touching port 80
There are two workable patterns. A full replacement makes Nginx the web server for every site and stops Apache after the translated configuration is verified. A staged migration puts Nginx in front of Apache, with Apache listening on an internal address such as 127.0.0.1:8080. Nginx owns the public ports and forwards requests until each application has been converted or retired.
| Decision factor | Full replacement | Staged reverse proxy |
|---|---|---|
| Cutover risk | Higher: every host and handler changes at once | Lower: Nginx can be introduced while Apache serves the application |
| Rollback speed | Fast only if the old Apache configuration and port bindings are preserved | Fast: point the proxy back to Apache or stop Nginx and restore Apache’s public listeners |
| Configuration complexity | Simpler final stack | Two services, proxy headers, and an internal listener to operate |
| Application compatibility | Requires complete translation of rewrites, handlers, authentication, and limits | Apache continues handling behavior that has not yet been translated |
| TLS ownership | Nginx terminates HTTPS directly | Nginx normally terminates HTTPS and forwards HTTP internally; Apache can remain unaware of the public certificate |
| Observability | One web-server log path after cutover | Correlate Nginx access/error logs with Apache and application logs |
For a single static site, a replacement is usually straightforward. For several virtual hosts, legacy rewrite rules, or an application that cannot be tested offline, begin with the staged pattern and retain it until the new server blocks have demonstrated parity.

Choose the strategy based on risk rather than on a presumed performance result. A full replacement leaves a cleaner final stack, but every translated rule becomes part of the cutover. A reverse proxy adds an extra service and another log path, yet it lets you isolate Nginx errors from application errors and switch the upstream back to Apache quickly. Decide who will own TLS, where logs will be collected, and how you will restore the previous listener arrangement before scheduling the change.
Inventory Apache and create a rollback checkpoint
Do this while Apache is still serving production traffic. The inventory is the reference you will use to prove that no host or behavior disappeared during translation.
- List every enabled site and record each
ServerNameandServerAlias. - Record the document root, index files, upload directories, and any directories protected by authentication.
- Write down PHP or other application handlers, proxy targets, rewrite rules, redirects, custom headers, request-body limits, and timeout settings.
- Note every TLS certificate path, renewal mechanism, cron job, scheduled task, and external service that expects a particular hostname.
- Save
/etc/apache2/and make a current database and application backup.
Also record which names are intended to be canonical. For example, decide whether the bare name or the www name should redirect, rather than allowing the first working server block to make that decision accidentally. Mark sites that share a document root, upload directory, runtime socket, or authentication policy; those shared dependencies often explain why a seemingly independent host breaks after a move.
Keep this checkpoint outside the VPS as well as on it. Document how to return Apache to ports 80 and 443, which Nginx symlink must be removed, and where the saved configuration lives. Do not decommission Apache until the validation section has been completed. A rollback plan should name the person responsible for the change, the exact order of service and listener changes, and the tests that confirm the old path is live again.
Preflight requirements on the Ubuntu VPS
You need administrative shell access, enough disk space for Nginx configuration and logs, and control of the DNS records for every hostname being moved. Make sure the VPS firewall and any provider-level firewall allow the public HTTP and HTTPS ports. If a hostname has both an IPv4 and an IPv6 record, plan to test both; a certificate authority or a visitor may reach the address family you did not test.
Schedule the change when you can watch requests and logs. Have the database and application backup available before editing listeners. If uploads or generated files live outside the document root, include those paths in the backup and in the permissions review. Confirm that an internal Apache listener will not be exposed publicly when using the staged design.

sudo systemctl status nginx
Apache may already be bound to ports 80 or 443. Only one service can listen on a given address and port, so Nginx cannot claim those public listeners while Apache owns them. For a full replacement, plan a brief stop-and-start cutover. For a staged migration, move Apache to an internal listener first and make sure the application still responds locally before assigning the public ports to Nginx.
Do not stop Apache merely to make the installation command succeed. If the package starts Nginx and the default site answers a request, treat that as an installation check, not as a production cutover. Remove or disable the default site only when your own server blocks are ready. Installing the package does not translate a single Apache directive, copy a certificate, or preserve an application handler; those are separate migration tasks.
Translate each Apache VirtualHost into a Nginx server block
Apache directives are not drop-in compatible with Nginx. Translate the intent of each virtual host: host matching, filesystem root, index behavior, static-file fallback, proxying, redirects, authentication, and headers. Do not paste an Apache block into a Nginx file and expect it to work.
Work one hostname set at a time. The Apache ServerName and ServerAlias values become the deliberate server_name list. The document root becomes Nginx’s root; index directives become an index list; and an Apache rewrite must be reproduced as an intentional Nginx routing rule or handled by the application. A proxy target needs an explicit upstream location, while authentication and custom headers need an equivalent Nginx or application configuration. Preserve the behavior, not the spelling of the old directive.
Static site example
Create one file per hostname set in /etc/nginx/sites-available/. For example, /etc/nginx/sites-available/example.com can contain:
server {
listen 80;
listen [::]:80;
server_name example.com www.example.com;
root /srv/example.com/public;
index index.html index.htm;
location / {
try_files $uri $uri/ =404;
}
}
listen declares the address family and port, server_name replaces Apache’s host matching, and root points to the content directory. The try_files rule serves an existing file or directory and returns a 404 instead of silently forwarding an unknown path. If the application needs a front-controller fallback, replace that rule only after confirming the framework’s expected route behavior; do not assume a generic 404 is equivalent to an Apache rewrite.
Check the path exactly as it exists on disk, including capitalization. Verify that Nginx can traverse the parent directories and read the files. If the application writes uploads, separate read access to the public files from write access to the upload directory and test both a new upload and a subsequent download.

Enable the block and test it
Ubuntu’s multi-site layout keeps definitions in sites-available and enables them with symlinks in sites-enabled:
sudo ln -s /etc/nginx/sites-available/example.com /etc/nginx/sites-enabled/example.com
sudo rm /etc/nginx/sites-enabled/default # only when no longer needed
sudo nginx -t
sudo systemctl reload nginx
Use a unique, intentional server_name set for every site. The default site can otherwise answer a hostname that did not match the block you expected. The removal command is conditional: leave the default site in place if it is still serving a deliberate landing page or diagnostic endpoint.
Always run sudo nginx -t before a reload. A successful test checks syntax and the validity of referenced configuration; a reload then applies the change without unnecessarily terminating existing connections. If the test fails, read the file and line number in the error, correct that one issue, and test again. Never reload a configuration that has not passed the test. After a successful reload, send requests with the intended hostname, not only to the server’s IP address, because server-block selection depends on the host name.
Decide whether Nginx serves the application or proxies Apache
Serve static content directly
Use root, index, and an appropriate try_files rule when Nginx can answer the request from disk. Verify filesystem permissions for the Nginx worker, including read access to the document root and write access to upload directories when the application requires it. Test URL paths with and without a trailing slash, missing assets, directory indexes, and any intentional redirects.
Recommended Free Tools
For an application with a front controller, test a known dynamic route, a route containing query parameters, and a deliberately missing route. A rule that is correct for a brochure site can return 404 for a framework that expects every non-file request to reach its index script. Keep static assets, generated files, and user uploads in the same locations the application expects unless you have explicitly changed those paths.
Proxy an application that still runs on Apache
Move Apache to an internal port and let Nginx handle the public hostname. A minimal block is:
server {
listen 80;
server_name app.example.com;
location / {
proxy_pass http://127.0.0.1:8080;
proxy_set_header Host $host;
proxy_set_header X-Real-IP $remote_addr;
proxy_set_header X-Forwarded-For $proxy_add_x_forwarded_for;
proxy_set_header X-Forwarded-Proto $scheme;
}
}
The forwarded headers preserve the original host, client address, proxy chain, and scheme for the upstream application. Confirm that the application trusts these headers only from the local proxy; accepting arbitrary client-supplied forwarding headers can create incorrect URLs or security decisions.

Proxying is a compatibility bridge, not proof that the application is fully migrated. Test the requirements that differ between deployments:
- WebSockets and other upgraded connections.
- PHP handling or another runtime handler.
- Maximum request-body size for uploads and forms.
- Response buffering and streaming behavior.
- Connection and upstream timeout values.
- Absolute redirects, secure-cookie decisions, and generated URLs based on the scheme.
Do not copy Apache’s rewrite, timeout, or limit values blindly. Reproduce the user-visible behavior, then set and test the corresponding Nginx or application setting. A successful home-page response is not enough: exercise login, logout, a session-backed page, a failed login, an upload, a download, and any long-running or streamed response.
Add HTTPS only after HTTP routing works
First make each hostname answer correctly over HTTP. This isolates host matching and application errors from certificate and challenge failures. Once the port-80 server block is correct and publicly reachable, use Certbot’s Nginx flow:
sudo snap install --classic certbot
sudo certbot --nginx -d example.com -d www.example.com
sudo certbot renew --dry-run
sudo systemctl status snap.certbot.renew.timer
The Nginx plugin finds the matching server block, obtains a certificate, writes the TLS directives, and reloads Nginx. Certificate and key material are placed under /etc/letsencrypt/live/. The renewal timer attempts renewal twice daily; the dry run exercises the renewal path without replacing a live certificate.

Check DNS, firewall rules, IPv4 and IPv6 reachability, and the port-80 server block before diagnosing Certbot itself. If a proxy or staged topology is in use, ensure the challenge request reaches Nginx and is not trapped by an Apache rewrite or an application route.
Use the normal HTTP-to-HTTPS split
After the certificate is installed, keep a port-80 block that redirects the canonical host to HTTPS, and a port-443 block that serves or proxies the application. Include every intended hostname in the certificate request and decide which name is canonical before enabling redirects. Test both the bare and www forms, an unknown path, a login flow, and an upload over HTTPS.
When Apache remains upstream, terminate TLS at Nginx and forward X-Forwarded-Proto https. Confirm that the application generates HTTPS links and secure cookies rather than redirecting back to HTTP. A redirect loop usually means the upstream does not trust the forwarded scheme or the proxy is sending the wrong value.

Cut over traffic in a controlled sequence
- Lower DNS TTL ahead of the change if your operational policy allows it, and note the current records. Do not treat a lower TTL as an instant switch; recursive resolvers may retain prior answers.
- Complete the server blocks and run
sudo nginx -t. - For a full replacement, stop Apache, start or reload Nginx, and immediately verify that Nginx owns ports 80 and 443. For a staged migration, confirm Apache is healthy on its internal listener, then expose Nginx publicly.
- Request every hostname over HTTP and HTTPS from an external network and, where possible, from both IPv4 and IPv6.
- Check canonical redirects, static assets, application routes, login and session behavior, uploads, large responses, and any WebSocket feature.
- Watch Nginx, Apache (if still upstream), and application access/error logs while exercising real workflows.
- Confirm the certificate dates and run the renewal dry run. Check that
snap.certbot.renew.timeris active. - Keep Apache’s saved configuration, the database/application backup, and the documented reversal commands until traffic has remained healthy through a normal operating period.
During the first checks, distinguish a DNS problem from a server-block problem by testing the actual hostname and by reviewing which service received the request. An old DNS answer can continue sending some visitors to Apache, so monitor both services during the transition. If only one address family fails, correct its listener, firewall, or DNS record rather than changing application routing.

Decommission Apache only when the evidence is complete
A migration is complete when every enabled Apache hostname has a corresponding, tested Nginx path; the chosen application handler is stable; redirects, authentication, uploads, logs, IPv4, IPv6, and HTTPS renewal work; and the rollback procedure has been rehearsed on paper. At that point you can stop Apache, remove its public listener, and retain the configuration backup for recovery. If any item remains uncertain, keep the staged reverse proxy and Apache internal listener rather than converting uncertainty into an outage.
After decommissioning, continue watching Nginx access and error logs, certificate renewal status, disk usage, and application logs. Remove obsolete symlinks and unused listener definitions only after confirming that no hostname, scheduled task, or external integration still depends on them. A clean final state is valuable, but preserving a tested backup and a clear reversal procedure is more valuable than deleting the old configuration immediately.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I install Nginx while Apache is still running?
Yes. Install the package and inspect the service, but Apache and Nginx cannot both own the same address and port. Keep Apache on ports 80 and 443 for the moment, or move it to an internal listener such as 127.0.0.1:8080 before making Nginx public.
How do I convert an Apache VirtualHost to Nginx?
Create a server block in /etc/nginx/sites-available/, translate the host names to server_name, the document root to root, index behavior to index, and rewrites, proxying, headers, authentication, and limits to equivalent Nginx or application behavior. Apache syntax is not drop-in compatible.
Should Nginx replace Apache immediately or reverse proxy it first?
A full replacement leaves a simpler final stack but has a larger cutover. A staged reverse proxy keeps Apache available on an internal port, lowers rollback risk, and lets you validate Nginx while the application continues running. It does require two services and correlated logs.
How do I keep HTTPS working during the migration?
Make HTTP routing work first, then run sudo certbot --nginx -d example.com -d www.example.com. Certbot writes the Nginx TLS configuration and stores certificate files under /etc/letsencrypt/live/. Test with sudo certbot renew --dry-run and verify snap.certbot.renew.timer.
Why does Certbot need port 80 if my site uses HTTPS?
Certbot’s HTTP-01 challenge must reach the hostname over port 80. Ensure DNS, firewalls, IPv4 and IPv6, and the correct port-80 server block allow the challenge request to reach Nginx.
What should I test before shutting down Apache?
Test every hostname over HTTP and HTTPS, canonical redirects, static assets, application routes, login and sessions, uploads, large responses, WebSockets where applicable, access and error logs, IPv4 and IPv6 reachability, and certificate renewal. Keep the Apache configuration and reversal commands until these checks pass.
