How to Migrate From MySQL to MariaDB on a Linux Server

By VGSources Team 12 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The safest general approach is to build a MariaDB server, restore a tested logical dump from MySQL, and switch the application only after its queries, users, jobs, and replication checks pass. An in-place package swap can reduce host changes and downtime, but it carries greater risk: MySQL must be shut down cleanly, configuration and authentication settings must be translated, and mariadb-upgrade must run immediately after MariaDB starts. Keep a verified rollback copy either way.

Choose the migration path before touching packages

MySQL and MariaDB share much of their SQL and client behavior, but they are different server products. Differences in authentication plugins, SQL syntax, system variables, configuration options, storage behavior, and GTID implementation can turn a seemingly simple replacement into an outage. The right method depends on downtime requirements, server architecture, data volume, operating-system age, the version gap, and whether the application uses MySQL-specific features.

Decision factor Logical dump and restore In-place swap
Downtime Usually includes dump transfer and restore; a replica or pre-staged destination can shorten the final cutover. Usually shorter because the existing data directory is retained, but all writes must stop while packages and system tables are changed.
Rollback Simpler: keep the original MySQL host and data directory available, then point the application back if acceptance tests fail. Harder: after MariaDB system tables are upgraded, MySQL binaries cannot simply be pointed at that directory.
Host separation Works well for a new host, a new Linux distribution, or a major product/version gap. Requires the same host and a data directory MariaDB can read after configuration conversion.
Large data sets Restore time and temporary storage can be substantial; plan capacity and transfer bandwidth. Avoids a full logical copy, but increases the consequences of an incompatibility or failed start.
Replication and GTIDs Lets you redesign replication deliberately on the destination. Requires translating MySQL replication and GTID settings rather than copying them unchanged.
MySQL-specific features Provides a clean compatibility boundary; incompatible objects can be corrected before cutover. Leaves every existing option, plugin, account, and object exposed to product differences at once.

Use a logical migration when safety is the priority

Choose a dump and restore for a new server, a different distribution, an old operating system, a large version or product gap, or any application with uncertain MySQL-specific dependencies. The source remains intact while you rehearse the destination, compare objects, and test the application.

Use an in-place migration only with a tested rollback

An in-place swap is reasonable when the host and storage must be retained, downtime is tightly constrained, and you have a complete backup that has been restored successfully elsewhere. It is not a shortcut around compatibility review. A clean shutdown, package transition, configuration audit, successful startup, and immediate system-table upgrade are mandatory.

Inventory MySQL and review compatibility

Create an inventory before selecting the MariaDB release. Record the exact MySQL server version and edition, Linux distribution and release support status, data-directory path, total data size, free disk space, storage engines, character sets, collations, and application connector versions. Also capture the objects and services that a dump can miss or that require separate handling.

  • Databases, tables, views, triggers, stored procedures, functions, events, and scheduled jobs.
  • Users, authentication plugins, password policies, grants, roles, proxy users, and certificates.
  • Plugins, component libraries, custom UDFs, TLS settings, socket paths, port bindings, and service-account ownership.
  • Replication topology, binary-log format, source or replica roles, filters, failover tooling, and every GTID setting.
  • Application connection strings, driver versions, ORM behavior, reserved words, and SQL modes.

Read the compatibility documentation for the exact MariaDB target before committing to a version. Do not assume a MySQL configuration file can be copied line-for-line. MySQL 8 authentication defaults and configuration variables may not have MariaDB equivalents, and MariaDB and MySQL use different GTID system variables. Replication settings therefore need a deliberate translation, not a blind copy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Identify high-risk application dependencies

Search application code, migration files, stored programs, and deployment manifests for MySQL-only syntax, optimizer hints, authentication-plugin requirements, generated-column behavior, JSON expressions, window-function assumptions, and references to server variables. Check connectors for a supported MariaDB connection mode and test both authentication and prepared statements. A query that parses on MySQL may fail, return a different type, or produce a different execution plan on MariaDB even when table definitions look identical.

Back up, then prove the backup works

Do not begin package changes because a backup command completed. Define the recovery point you need, make an independent backup, and restore it to an isolated MariaDB instance before production cutover. Keep the original MySQL host powered and unchanged until acceptance testing is complete.

Run a compatibility rehearsal first

A fast schema-only rehearsal exposes unsupported definitions without waiting for a full data transfer. For example:

mysqldump --all-databases --no-data --routines --events > dump-defs.sql

Restore that file into a disposable MariaDB instance and record every warning and error. Compare database, table, view, routine, trigger, and event counts with the source. A clean schema rehearsal is useful evidence, not a substitute for loading real data and exercising the application.

Create a production dump appropriate to the workload

Quiesce writes for a consistent point-in-time export, or use a transactionally consistent dump strategy supported by the storage engines and topology. Include routines and events when the application uses them. MariaDB’s current dump client is mariadb-dump; it was historically named mysqldump, so confirm the client version and option compatibility when moving files between server generations.

Protect dump files in transit and at rest. Verify their size and checksum, inspect the command’s exit status, and retain enough disk space on the destination for the compressed file, extracted data, temporary tables, and MariaDB’s own recovery operations. If the recovery objective requires point-in-time recovery, preserve the relevant binary logs or an equivalent independent backup rather than relying on a single dump.

Logical migration: build and cut over to a MariaDB host

This workflow keeps the source available while the destination is prepared. Exact repository, package, service, and filesystem commands depend on the Linux distribution and the selected MariaDB release; use the vendor instructions matching both, rather than copying Debian commands onto an RPM-based system or vice versa.

  1. Prepare the destination. Provision a supported Linux release, firewall rules, storage, monitoring, time synchronization, and backup space. Install the selected MariaDB packages from the repository or package instructions for that distribution and release.
  2. Initialize a new data directory. If the directory is new, initialize it with mariadb-install-db. On Linux and Unix this creates the MariaDB system tables. Set ownership to the MariaDB service account and verify the configured data path before starting the service.
  3. Install and review configuration. Recreate only settings that have a documented MariaDB equivalent. Check bind address, port, socket, TLS files, character set, collation, SQL mode, InnoDB settings, binary logging, and resource limits. Do not carry over obsolete or MySQL-only variables without testing them.
  4. Transfer the dump securely. Copy the verified dump to the destination, check its checksum, and restrict permissions so only the database service account or an authorized administrator can read it.
  5. Import the data. Load the dump with the MariaDB client appropriate to the dump format. Monitor errors rather than piping them away. Save the complete import log and stop if table definitions, routines, triggers, or events fail.
  6. Recreate accounts and grants. Accounts and privileges are part of the security boundary, but authentication syntax and plugins can differ. Recreate users with MariaDB-compatible statements, assign the least privileges required, install required certificates or plugins, and test each application account from the same network path the application uses.
  7. Review programmable objects. Inspect views, routines, triggers, events, and scheduled jobs for reserved words, SQL-mode assumptions, definer accounts, and unsupported syntax. Confirm that event scheduling is intentionally enabled and that job ownership and time zones are correct.
  8. Rebuild replication deliberately. If the destination will replicate, translate server IDs, binary-log settings, filters, credentials, and GTID configuration for MariaDB. Do not paste MySQL GTID variables into a MariaDB configuration and assume they have the same meaning.
  9. Run acceptance tests. Exercise representative reads and writes, authentication, transactions, background jobs, reports, uploads, and failure handling. Compare query results and important execution times with a known workload.
  10. Cut over. Stop or drain application writes, perform a final synchronized export or replication catch-up, update the connection endpoint, and watch logs, error rates, lock waits, and replication state. Keep the MySQL source available until the agreed acceptance window ends.

In-place migration: replace MySQL on the existing Linux host

Use this path only after a restore-tested rollback copy exists. The key risk is that MariaDB eventually changes the shared mysql system tables; those changes are not reversible by reinstalling MySQL packages over the same data directory.

  1. Freeze change activity. Announce a maintenance window, stop application writes, pause workers and scheduled jobs, and confirm that no replication process will write during the conversion.
  2. Take and verify backups. Keep a logical dump plus an independent physical or filesystem-level recovery copy when your recovery plan requires one. Restore at least one copy to an isolated environment and record the time needed.
  3. Shut down MySQL cleanly. Use the service manager for the distribution, then verify that no MySQL process still has the data directory open. An unclean shutdown can leave recovery work that complicates the first MariaDB start.
  4. Preserve configuration and paths. Copy configuration files, TLS material, service overrides, custom plugins, account information, and the exact data-directory metadata. Save the package list and enabled repositories so you can reconstruct the original host if necessary.
  5. Remove or replace packages according to the distribution. Do not delete the data directory. Package names, service names, repository files, and dependency behavior differ between Debian/Ubuntu and RHEL, Alma, or Fedora families; follow the instructions for the exact OS and MariaDB release.
  6. Install MariaDB and audit configuration. Install the selected packages, then examine every inherited option. Remove MySQL-only variables, translate authentication settings, check plugin paths, and confirm that the service account can read the data directory and certificates.
  7. Start MariaDB and inspect logs immediately. Check the service status and journal or MariaDB error log for permission errors, unknown variables, unsupported plugins, InnoDB recovery messages, authentication failures, and port conflicts. Do not proceed while startup errors are being ignored.
  8. Run the upgrade utility immediately. Once the server is running, execute mariadb-upgrade with the administrative credentials appropriate to the installation. The utility updates MariaDB’s system tables, runs checks such as CHECK TABLE ... FOR UPGRADE, and can rebuild tables with ALTER TABLE ... FORCE when required. Reboot or restart only after the utility completes successfully if the package instructions require it.
  9. Validate and release traffic. Check users, grants, object counts, application queries, jobs, binary logging, and replication before allowing writes. Keep the rollback copy untouched.

The internal system tables remain in the previous format until the upgrade utility runs. After mariadb-upgrade modifies them, pointing MySQL binaries back at that data directory is not a supported rollback. Roll back by restoring the preserved MySQL data and configuration to a clean MySQL installation, or by switching traffic to the original host if you retained one.

Linux installation and initialization details

Repository selection is part of the migration design. Match the MariaDB major release to the Linux distribution’s supported libraries, OpenSSL behavior, service manager, and kernel. A repository intended for one distribution release may install successfully yet fail at startup or receive no security updates on another.

  • On Debian- or Ubuntu-family systems, verify the repository release, package names, systemd unit name, configuration include directories, and AppArmor or firewall rules.
  • On RHEL-, Alma-, or Fedora-family systems, verify the repository module or repository file, package names, SELinux labels, systemd unit, and firewall rules.
  • On a new data directory, run mariadb-install-db before the first normal startup unless the package performs initialization automatically. Confirm ownership and permissions afterward.
  • Record the actual data path with the running service; do not assume it is the distribution’s default.

Never mix package commands from different distributions in a runbook without testing them on the exact target image. Include repository configuration, package versions, service status checks, log locations, and a tested removal or restoration procedure in the change plan.

Users, authentication, and privileges

A successful table import does not prove that clients can connect. Compare every source account’s host pattern, authentication plugin, password state, TLS requirement, default database, roles, and grants. Recreate accounts using MariaDB-compatible syntax and avoid preserving obsolete or overly broad privileges merely because they existed on MySQL.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Test local socket connections and remote TCP connections separately. Then test each application connector with its production TLS settings, connection pool, prepared statements, and reconnect behavior. If an account depended on a MySQL-specific authentication plugin, decide whether MariaDB supports it on the chosen release or whether the application must be changed before cutover. Document the new credential rotation and emergency-access procedure.

Replication and GTID translation

Replication is not a copy-and-paste configuration task in a cross-product migration. MariaDB and MySQL expose different GTID system variables and semantics. Capture the source topology and decide whether the destination will be a new primary, a replica, or an independent server before writing configuration.

For a new independent primary

Import a consistent dump, configure binary logging if required, create replication users with MariaDB-compatible authentication, and establish downstream replicas using MariaDB’s documented settings. Verify server identity, log positions or GTID state, filters, and retention before accepting writes.

For a replica or staged cutover

Choose a supported interoperability design for the exact source and target versions. Translate GTID domains, IDs, channel settings, credentials, and failover tooling explicitly. Measure replication lag, stop conditions, and the final consistency point. Do not declare success because the SQL thread is running; compare representative data and confirm that DDL, triggers, events, and error handling behave as expected.

Validation checklist before changing the application endpoint

Use a written acceptance checklist and save the results. Validation should cover more than whether the service is “active.”

  • Service health: systemd status, error log, startup time, crash recovery state, listening address, and TLS certificate.
  • Data inventory: database, table, view, routine, trigger, and event counts compared with the source.
  • Definitions: character sets, collations, indexes, generated columns, foreign keys, SQL modes, and engine types.
  • Security: users, grants, roles, host restrictions, authentication plugins, password rotation, and encrypted connections.
  • Application behavior: login, representative reads and writes, transactions, bulk operations, reports, uploads, and error handling.
  • Automation: event scheduler, external cron jobs, queues, workers, backups, and monitoring alerts.
  • Replication: binary logging, replica state, GTID or position tracking, lag, filters, and failover procedures.
  • Performance: compare a known workload’s latency, throughput, lock waits, buffer usage, and query plans; do not substitute an invented benchmark for your own measurements.
  • Recovery: rehearse restoring the MariaDB backup and document who can execute the rollback.

Failure modes and recovery actions

MariaDB will not start

Read the service log first. Common causes include an unknown MySQL-only variable, incorrect data-directory ownership, an incompatible plugin, a port or socket conflict, invalid TLS paths, SELinux or AppArmor denial, or an unfinished storage-engine recovery. Restore the last known-good configuration, correct one issue at a time, and never delete redo logs or system tables as a first response.

mariadb-upgrade reports errors

Save the full output, check server and client versions, and inspect the affected table or system object. Do not repeatedly rerun the utility while ignoring failed checks. If the upgrade changed system tables and the application cannot be validated, use the preserved MySQL copy or original host rather than attempting to start MySQL against the modified directory.

Import errors mention syntax, definers, or collations

Stop the import, classify the failing object, and correct the dump or object definition in a test instance. Definer accounts that do not exist on MariaDB can break views, routines, and events; create the intended account or revise the definer under a controlled change. Unsupported collations, SQL modes, and reserved words should be resolved before production cutover.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Clients authenticate but the application fails

Compare connector versions, TLS negotiation, default database, session SQL mode, character-set negotiation, prepared statements, and transaction isolation. A successful command-line login proves only that one client and account work; it does not validate the application’s driver or connection pool.

Replication does not catch up

Check GTID or position translation, server identity, filters, credentials, binary-log retention, SQL and I/O thread errors, and the first divergent transaction. If the topology cannot be made consistent within the maintenance window, stop the cutover and use the original source or a freshly prepared destination instead of forcing replication.

A practical runbook summary

  1. Record versions, OS support, objects, accounts, plugins, replication, and application dependencies.
  2. Choose logical restore or in-place conversion using downtime, rollback, host separation, data size, version gap, and compatibility risk.
  3. Make independent backups and restore-test them; run a schema-only compatibility rehearsal.
  4. Prepare a MariaDB host or preserve the in-place data directory and configuration for rollback.
  5. Install the exact repository and packages for the target Linux release.
  6. Import and reconcile users, grants, routines, events, triggers, views, and scheduled jobs, or convert the retained data directory.
  7. For an in-place swap, start MariaDB, inspect logs, and run mariadb-upgrade immediately.
  8. Translate replication and GTID settings instead of copying MySQL variables unchanged.
  9. Run application, security, data-integrity, performance, and recovery acceptance tests.
  10. Cut over writes only when the checklist passes, and retain the source or rollback copy until the acceptance window closes.
