The safest Minecraft server migration is a controlled cutover: stop the old server cleanly, archive the complete server directory, install compatible software on the new host, restore the world and settings, test with a real client, and only then send players to the new address. Keep the old host and an untouched backup until the new server has worked through verification.
Prefer not to run the server on your own PC? Godlike.Host offers hosted Minecraft Java servers with free DDoS protection and up to three free backups a day.
Plan the move before you copy anything
A migration is more than moving a world folder. The world, player data, permissions, add-ons, server settings and startup environment must agree on the new machine. Write down the current setup before scheduling downtime.

| Edition | Java Edition or Bedrock Dedicated Server | World formats and configuration files are different. |
| Server software | The implementation and exact Minecraft version | A world opened by incompatible software can fail to load or behave unexpectedly. |
| Runtime | The Java runtime required by the Java server | The new host must be able to launch the same software. |
| World selection | The configured world name or Bedrock level-name |
The server may start a new world if the setting does not match the restored folder. |
| Network | Configured port, address, firewall rules and any DNS name | Players need a reachable endpoint after cutover. |
| Gameplay settings | Difficulty, game mode, online-mode, player limit, view distance, tick distance and allow-list status | These settings affect access and the way the server runs. |
| Extensions | Java plugins or mods, datapacks, resource packs, Bedrock behavior packs and resource packs | Missing or mismatched extensions can disable features or produce console errors. |
Choose a maintenance window long enough to stop the old server, transfer the archive and perform a real connection test. Tell players not to join while the final backup is being made; files written during copying can leave player data or region files inconsistent.
Make a complete, clean backup on the old host
- Announce the start of maintenance and stop new logins.
- Use the host’s stop control or the server’s normal shutdown command. Wait until the process exits and no files are still being written.
- Copy the entire server directory into a compressed archive. Do not copy only the visible world terrain.
- Open the archive or inspect its file list and confirm that the expected world folders, properties, extension folders and player-management files are present.
- Store one copy away from the old host. Treat this copy as immutable: do not overwrite it during testing.
A clean shutdown is essential for both editions. If the host provides a snapshot or migration tool, still retain your own downloadable archive so you have an independent rollback point.

What the migration archive must contain
The safest archive is the complete old server directory after shutdown. At minimum, verify the following items before uploading it.
| Data | Java Edition | Bedrock Dedicated Server |
|---|---|---|
| World data | Every world directory used by the server, including the configured primary world and its other dimensions. | The existing world folder that will be placed under worlds/. |
| Core settings | server.properties, startup scripts and any launch arguments. |
server.properties, startup settings and the intended level-name. |
| Extensions | Plugins or mods, their configuration files, datapacks and resource packs. | Behavior packs and resource packs, plus their configuration and dependency files. |
| Player administration | Whitelist or allow-list data, permissions, operator data and ban lists. | allowlist.json, permissions, operator data and ban lists. |
| Related services | Proxy, voice-chat, map-renderer and scheduled-task configuration when those services belong to this server. | Any equivalent service configuration used with the Bedrock server. |
Keep filenames and folder names unchanged unless the destination software explicitly requires a new location. A missing configuration can be harder to notice than a missing world because the server may start with defaults.
Prepare the new host
Install the same server implementation and Minecraft version first. A deliberate upgrade is possible, but treat it as a separate compatibility decision: verify the new software supports the world and every plugin, mod or pack before combining an upgrade with the move. For Java Edition, install the Java runtime required by that server build.
On a Bedrock Dedicated Server, start the server once and then stop it. This creates the expected directory structure, including worlds/ and the default properties file. Starting once before restoration avoids guessing which folders the host expects.
Check that you can access the new host’s file manager, SFTP service or migration/import tool. Confirm available storage is greater than the compressed archive plus the extracted server directory; extraction temporarily requires both copies. On a self-managed machine, also prepare the firewall and service account before opening the server to players.

Transfer and restore a Java Edition server
1. Upload and extract the archive
Upload the compressed backup through the host’s file manager, SFTP or migration tool. Extract it into the directory from which the new server will launch. If the tool extracts an extra top-level folder, check the resulting path before starting; the launch script and server.properties should be in the server’s working directory, not buried one level too deep.

2. Restore the world and extensions
Preserve the world folder names expected by the server. Restore plugins or mods together with their configuration, datapacks and resource packs. Copy whitelist data, permissions, operator records and ban lists so players retain their access and moderation state. Keep startup scripts and their arguments if the new host’s service manager can use them; otherwise, reproduce the same settings in the host’s startup panel.
3. Check the properties before launch
- Confirm the configured world name points to the restored world rather than a new default.
- Compare the port and firewall rule with the address you intend to publish.
- Check online-mode, difficulty and game mode.
- Confirm the server implementation, Minecraft version, Java runtime and plugin or mod versions are compatible.
- Review player-limit and allow-list settings before inviting anyone to test.
4. Start privately and inspect the console
Start the server while the old host remains offline to players. Watch the console for missing files, failed datapacks, resource-pack errors, authentication failures and extension version conflicts. Do not treat a process that reaches a “ready” state as proof of a successful migration; the world must be opened by a client and examined.
5. Join with an operator account
Connect from a real Java client using the new address. Check the expected spawn, several player locations, inventories, ender chests, Nether and End dimensions, containers and recent builds. Test commands, redstone, farms, portals, permissions and every important plugin or mod. A successful login that opens an empty or newly generated world means the world name or folder path is wrong, not that the migration succeeded.
Transfer and restore a Bedrock Dedicated Server
1. Create the destination structure
Run the Bedrock Dedicated Server once on the new machine, then stop it. This creates the destination folders. Compress the old world folder for transfer; a cloud-storage handoff can be useful for a large archive, provided you download and verify the archive before deleting anything from the old host.

- Solid state performance with up to 800MB/s read speeds in a portable drive. (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device, interface, usage conditions and other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
- Back up your content and memories on a storage solution that fits seamlessly into your mobile lifestyle.

- Secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind thanks to the tough rubber hook.
- From Sandisk, a brand professional photographers trust to take on assignments.
2. Place the world under worlds/
Extract the restored world folder inside the new server’s worlds/ directory. Avoid special characters in the folder name. The folder name must be reproduced exactly in the properties file.
3. Match level-name
Open server.properties and set level-name to the restored folder name. If the value does not match, Bedrock can create or open a different world. Preserve allowlist.json, permissions, resource packs and behavior packs from the old server.
4. Verify Bedrock settings
- Check the configured server port and the new host’s firewall.
- Confirm online-mode, max players, view distance and tick distance.
- Confirm whether the allow-list is enabled and that the expected players are present in
allowlist.json. - Review difficulty, game mode and any pack dependencies.
5. Test from a Bedrock client
Start the destination server and connect from the intended network using a Bedrock client. Verify spawn, builds, inventories, dimensions, packs and permissions. If you edit allowlist.json directly while the server is running, perform the server’s allow-list reload so the change takes effect; a file edit alone is not a live reload.
Choose the transfer method that fits your access
| Method | Best for | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Host migration/import tool | Managed hosts that support a guided import. | Less manual extraction, but you have less control over where files are placed and how versions are selected. Keep your own archive anyway. |
| File manager upload and extraction | Small or moderate archives and hosts with browser-based storage tools. | Simple interface; browser uploads can be slow or time out on very large archives. |
| SFTP | Operators who need resumable, direct file transfer. | Requires an SFTP account and correct destination permissions. |
| Cloud-storage handoff | Large Bedrock or Java archives when both machines can download the same file. | Adds an extra copy to secure and delete; verify the downloaded archive before using it. |
Control and support vary by host. A managed environment can reduce manual extraction, while a self-managed VPS gives you direct control over the runtime, firewall, backups and updates but makes you responsible for each of them. Compare those factors alongside downtime, archive size, extension support and rollback options rather than choosing on transfer speed alone.
Validate the destination before cutover
Use a short acceptance checklist and record the result for each item. Test with both an operator account and an ordinary player account; permissions problems often appear only for the latter.

- Network: The configured port is reachable from a real client on the intended network, not only from the host itself.
- Logs: Console output contains no unresolved authentication, pack, database, extension or world-loading errors.
- Performance: Walk through busy areas and use the features players rely on; a server can load successfully while an extension fails only when used.
Have testers disconnect and reconnect, then confirm that their latest inventory and location persist. This catches write-permission and shutdown problems that a single session can hide.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Cut over players and retain a rollback path
- Stop the old server again and make one final clean archive if players were allowed to test there.
- Ensure the destination contains the final archive’s world and configuration, then start it and perform the acceptance checks one more time.
- Change the DNS record or publish the new address only after the destination passes those checks. If you use a direct address, send players the new endpoint and the maintenance completion time.
- Keep the old host powered down but intact, and retain at least one immutable backup. Do not cancel the old service until players have accepted the new server and you have confirmed that backups work.
If a serious problem appears, stop the destination before it writes more data, tell players to pause, and restore the last known-good archive. Switching back to the old host is safer than trying to repair a damaged world while players continue connecting. Once the cause is understood, repeat the transfer and validation steps.

The server opens a new world
Check the Java world setting or Bedrock level-name, then compare the spelling and capitalization with the extracted folder. Also check for an extra directory layer created during archive extraction.
Players cannot connect
Confirm the edition and client match the destination, then verify the configured port, firewall rule, DNS record and online-mode setting. Test from outside the host itself; a local connection can succeed even when the public port is blocked.
Plugins, mods or packs are missing
Compare the archive with the destination directory, restore each extension’s configuration and check version compatibility with the installed server. Read the console for the first missing dependency or load error rather than repeatedly restarting.

Players lose permissions or are blocked
Restore whitelist or allow-list files, operator data, permissions and ban lists. On Bedrock, reload the allow-list after direct edits. Test with an ordinary player account as well as an operator.
The world loads but recent progress is absent
The final backup may have been made while the old process was still running, or the wrong archive may have been uploaded. Stop the old server cleanly, create a fresh archive and compare its timestamp and contents with the destination before repeating the restore.
The new server crashes during startup
Check the Java runtime for Java Edition, available storage, file permissions and extension versions. On Bedrock, verify that the world is in worlds/, the level-name matches and pack dependencies are present. Preserve the crash log before changing several settings at once.
After the move: secure and document the new server
Once the migration is accepted, update your backup schedule to target the new host and periodically test that an archive can be restored. Record the server version, runtime, launch settings, port, world name, extension versions and the location of the immutable backup. Remove temporary transfer copies and revoke temporary SFTP or cloud-storage access. Keep a written rollback note identifying the old host, the last known-good archive and the steps required to start it again.
Future upgrades should be staged separately from host moves when possible. Make a fresh backup, test the upgrade on a copy, and only then apply it to the live destination. Separating those changes makes it clear whether a failure came from the host transfer or from a version change.
