You can mod GTA 5 on PC by matching a Story Mode mod and its required tools to your installed game edition and build, then adding the files carefully and testing one change at a time. Keep the modded setup out of official GTA Online: Rockstar requires BattlEye for its official servers, and a modified installation is not a ban-proof or Rockstar-endorsed setup.
Before you install anything: separate Story Mode from GTA Online
Plan to use mods only in Story Mode. Rockstar says BattlEye protects GTA Online against cheating software and code manipulation; official GTA Online requires BattlEye, and launching without it will not connect to official servers. Rockstar Customer Support describes BattlEye as “kernel anti-cheat software that protects online Rockstar Games players from cheaters” in its Grand Theft Auto Online BattlEye FAQ, last updated June 17, 2025.
Do not use a modded installation to enter official Online or assume that a particular mod is safe there. Rockstar also says ReShade and Special_K may cause technical issues and may be disabled during GTA Online gameplay; that does not establish that other mods are safe online. Check your GTA V edition and build
PC players may have GTA V Legacy or GTA V Enhanced. They are separate editions, and a tool or mod that supports one edition or game build may not support the other. Before downloading, confirm the edition installed through your launcher and check the mod’s release page and each required tool’s release notes for explicit support for that edition and build. Do not assume an older Legacy mod will work on Enhanced.

Updates can change compatibility. Recheck release notes after a game update rather than relying on an old installation guide or a previously working file. There is no universal installation process for every GTA V mod.
Choose the tools the mod actually requires

Use the mod’s original release page where possible, inspect its documented requirements, and avoid suspicious repackaging. A tool’s existence or popularity is not proof that it supports your current game build.

Install and test a Story Mode mod
- Establish a clean baseline. Launch the unmodified game and confirm Story Mode works. This is a practical troubleshooting check, not a Rockstar requirement for modding.
- Select one mod. Read its current release page for supported edition and build, required loaders or dependencies, exact installation location, and uninstall instructions. Avoid downloading a file simply because it appears in a search result.
- Back up and record. Keep a clean copy or another reliable way to restore original game files. Note every file you add and back up saves and settings before any cleanup that affects user-data folders.
- Install only the stated requirements. Follow the mod’s instructions for its loader and dependencies. For an ASI-based mod, use Script Hook V only if the mod calls for it; for an archive mod, follow the current OpenIV instructions, including its
mods-folder approach when specified. - Add one mod at a time. Start Story Mode and check that it launches before adding another change. If it does not, the most recent addition is the first thing to remove or review.
Keep the modded installation away from official Online
Do not try to use Story Mode mods in official GTA Online. Before attempting official Online, restore an unmodified setup and re-enable BattlEye. Rockstar’s BattlEye troubleshooting guidance covers the requirement for official servers. If you cannot tell which files need to be removed, follow the mod’s uninstall instructions or verify and restore game files through your launcher rather than guessing.

- The game stopped launching after an install: Remove the latest mod or dependency using its uninstall steps, then retry Story Mode.
- You are unsure what changed: Compare your recorded additions with the mod’s instructions or restore the clean copy. Avoid deleting unrelated files.
- File conflicts persist: Use Rockstar’s clean-install instructions. Rockstar warns that residual files can cause conflicts.
- Cleanup could affect saves or settings: Back up those user-data files first. Rockstar warns that unbacked-up files in data directories may not be recoverable.
Story Mode generally does not require an internet connection, but Rockstar notes that a connection may still be needed for Online play, cloud synchronization, or game-file updates. Its offline-mode guidance explains the relevant limits.
