In Borderlands 3, you can change a weapon’s appearance by applying a skin or equipping a trinket. The standard inventory interface documented in the available guides does not provide a way to swap functional parts such as barrels or grips. Weapon inspection can show part information, but that is not the same as editing those parts.
Change a weapon’s skin
- Open your inventory or backpack and highlight the weapon you want to customize.
- Inspect the weapon. A 2019 guide lists R3 on PlayStation 4 or Xbox One, and E on PC.
- Use the skin prompt shown on the inspection screen. The guide lists Square on PlayStation 4 and X on Xbox One and PC. Select an available skin and apply it.
Controls can vary by platform or update, so follow the prompt currently displayed in your game if it differs. Skins change a gun’s look and colors; the inspection menu lets you preview the selected skin before returning to play. ComicBook.com’s 2019 guide details the steps, while Attack of the Fanboy’s guide also documents the inspect-screen controls and cautions that its instructions may be outdated.

Equip a weapon trinket
- Return to the inventory view without inspecting the weapon.
- Select the small square beside the equipped weapon.
- Choose an available trinket, then return to play to see it hanging from the gun.
Trinkets use a separate inventory slot from skins, which are selected from the weapon’s inspection screen. Both are visual customizations, not weapon-performance upgrades. ComicBook.com’s guide describes this inventory procedure.
Can you change barrels, grips, or other weapon parts?
The documented standard inventory procedure covers skins and trinkets, not swapping functional weapon parts. Although inspection may display a weapon’s parts, the cited guides do not establish that those entries are editable through the ordinary interface. The official August 8, 2024 update notes cover PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC via Steam and Epic, and list quality-of-life changes such as max-level character creation and rarity-based auto-sell; they do not announce a parts-editing feature. This describes what the documented standard interface supports, not third-party tools or every possible later patch.

Where to get weapon cosmetics
A 2019 guide reports that cosmetics may be found during play, bought from Earl with Eridium, or received through in-game mail accessed from the Social menu. These are reported routes, not a guarantee that every item is always obtainable through each one.
There is also a separate paid digital add-on: the Xbox listing for the Gold Weapon Skins Pack says it is published by 2K and includes gold weapon skins plus a gold weapon trinket that can be applied to all guns. It requires Borderlands 3, sold separately. The pack is cosmetic content, not a way to edit functional weapon parts; its price and availability may vary by storefront and over time.
