To check a YouTube stream remotely, open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room on a phone and inspect its stream status and health. YouTube also documents live-stream metrics in its Android Studio app. For automatic ingest checks, a developer can query the YouTube Live Streaming API; the official sources reviewed do not establish configurable push or email alerts when an encoder stops sending data.
Choose what you need to monitor
“Is there a way to get an email notification if my YouTube live stream stops receiving data from the streaming software?” is a common kind of concern, but it helps to separate three different checks:
- Encoder ingest: Is YouTube receiving data from your streaming software? YouTube’s stream status and health information can help answer this.
- Public playback: Can a viewer open the watch page and see the stream playing? A healthy ingest signal and a working public playback experience are related but distinct checks.
- Alert delivery: Will someone be notified if the feed fails? The official YouTube pages cited here document dashboards and API data, not a configurable encoder-failure push or email alert.
Check stream health from a phone
Use YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room
While the stream is running, the Live Control Room shows stream status and health information, including specific error details. Open YouTube Studio on a device that can access your channel, select the active stream, and inspect its status and health rather than relying only on whether the public watch page loads. Use the Android Studio app for a remote dashboard
YouTube documents live-stream metrics in its Android Studio app, so an existing compatible Android phone can be a practical way to check in while away from your computer. This supports periodic manual checks; it does not establish that every desktop Live Control Room control is available on mobile, or that the app will alert you automatically when an encoder feed stops.

Automate an ingest check with the YouTube Live Streaming API
If you need a machine to check whether YouTube is receiving the feed, the Live Streaming API exposes the incoming liveStream resource and its status and health fields. This is a developer route: you need to build and maintain a checker that authenticates to the API, reads the relevant stream, and decides when to notify you. The API is not a turnkey alert service.
Interpret the stream status precisely
The API’s status.streamStatus field can be active, created, error, inactive, or ready. The documentation defines active as the state in which “the user is receiving data via the stream”; inactive means data is not being received. Treat these as ingest states, not proof that every viewer can watch successfully.

Check health as well as activity
The status.healthStatus.status field can be good, ok, bad, or noData. The API also provides a health-update timestamp and configuration issue details. Health information may reveal problems such as insufficient video output or an unsupported configuration, so a useful checker should inspect more than a simple active/inactive value. Design the alert path, not just the check
Your checker must decide what counts as a fault, how often to query, and how to deliver an alert. Avoid treating one missed or delayed response as definitive without considering how your implementation handles transient errors. Also account for failures in the monitoring host, network, API credentials, and notification channel: a checker that is itself offline cannot report the stream outage. The cited API documentation describes the available stream data, but does not prescribe a particular alert threshold, polling schedule, or notification method.

Verify the viewer experience separately
If your concern is whether the public stream is actually visible and moving, check the viewer-facing playback as a separate operational test. A public watch page being reachable does not establish that the encoder feed is healthy, and an active ingest state does not by itself confirm what a viewer sees. The official sources cited here do not recommend a specific third-party playback-monitoring service.
Know what YouTube’s monitor stream is for
YouTube’s private monitor stream lets a broadcaster preview or test content; it is distinct from the broadcast stream intended for the audience. It is not described in the API overview as an unattended off-site monitor or notification service. See the YouTube Live Streaming API overview.

Third-party monitoring: expect setup and upkeep
A Grafana community dashboard listing describes tracking YouTube stream status and outages with Prometheus and a YouTube exporter. That is a configurable third-party stack, not an official YouTube feature or a ready-to-use phone alert. Before relying on a particular setup, confirm its current implementation, maintenance requirements, and alert delivery. The listing is available through the Grafana community dashboards.
