Use atop when you need more than a live CPU meter. It gives you a full-screen terminal view of CPU, memory and swap, disks, network interfaces, and the processes responsible for the load. Its raw logging mode also lets you replay an incident after it has ended, which is the key difference between watching a VPS and actually investigating one.
Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with full root access, unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbps port and a 14-day free trial.
For a dependable workflow, install the distribution package, run an interactive session while reproducing or waiting for the problem, learn to read the system summary before the process list, and keep the packaged logger or your own raw files enabled. Remember that per-process disk and network attribution can require root privileges, kernel accounting support, or the optional netatop component.

What atop monitors on a Linux VPS
Atop is an ASCII full-screen performance monitor for Linux capable of reporting the activity of all processes. It samples system and process counters, presents them in a terminal interface, and can write those counters to compressed raw files for later replay. The display is designed to answer two questions at once: which resource is under pressure? and which process is causing it?
The top portion of the screen summarizes the machine. Depending on the view, you can see processor utilization, memory and swap consumption, disk activity, and traffic on network interfaces. The lower portion lists processes and their resource use. A process that appears near the top of a CPU, memory, disk, or network sort is a candidate for investigation, not automatically proof of the root cause; use successive samples and the process command line to establish what it is doing.

Interactive sampling defaults to 10 seconds. You can supply a different interval and an optional sample count when you need a faster view during a short spike or a bounded capture for a test. A short interval shows more detail but produces more screen updates and, when logging, more records.
Install atop and prepare the VPS
Use the distribution package first
Install the atop package from your Linux distribution whenever it is available. Distribution packages normally include the executable, its manual page, service integration, and a background logging configuration. The package name is generally atop; use the package manager and repository appropriate to your distribution and release.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
After installation, verify that the command is present and read the installed manual page. Package versions and service behavior differ, so the local manual and service files are the authority for your VPS rather than instructions written for another distribution.
Build from upstream when no suitable package exists
If your distribution does not provide a usable package, build from the upstream source. Upstream documents make install for systemd-based systems and make sysvinstall for SysV-init systems. The build and runtime depend on zlib, ncurses, and glib; install the development headers and runtime libraries supplied by your operating system before compiling.
Building yourself gives you control over the version, but you then own service setup, upgrades, log rotation, and compatibility checks. On a production game or application VPS, a maintained distribution package is usually simpler unless you need a feature or version that the repository does not contain.
Check privileges before troubleshooting
You can start the basic monitor as an ordinary user, but some counters are restricted. The Debian documentation requires root privileges for per-process disk-transfer data and notes that kernel storage-accounting support is also needed. Per-process network load requires the optional netatop module and daemon support. Without those pieces, atop still reports aggregate activity for each network interface.
If a field is blank, zero, or unavailable, do not interpret that as “no activity” until you have checked your privileges and the required kernel support.

Start an interactive monitoring session
- Open an SSH session or local terminal with enough width to display the process columns. A narrow terminal can hide fields and make sorting harder to read.
- Run
atopwith no arguments for the normal interactive mode. The default sample interval is 10 seconds. - For a short, faster observation, provide an interval and, if needed, a sample count. Use the syntax documented by the installed version; the interval controls seconds between samples and the count limits how long the session runs.
- Leave the monitor running while you reproduce the slowdown, deploy a change, start a backup, or wait for the next scheduled job.
- Stop the interactive session with its normal quit command from the installed manual. Do not terminate it with
kill -9; the manual warns that a forced kill can leave process accounting running and allow the accounting file to grow excessively.
Atop suppresses unchanged processes by default so that the display emphasizes activity. That is useful during a busy incident, but it can hide a quiet process that matters, such as a parent service waiting on a saturated disk. Use the documented activity/all-process controls when you need to include processes that did not change between samples.
Read the screen in the right order
1. Establish whether the problem is CPU, memory, disk, or network
Begin with the system summary, not the first process in the list. Check processor utilization and wait time, available memory and swap behavior, disk throughput or waiting, and network-interface traffic. This prevents a common mistake: blaming a process that is visible during an incident even though another resource is the actual bottleneck.
For example, a game server may look slow while its CPU percentage is modest because the host is waiting on storage. Conversely, a process can consume substantial CPU while disk and network counters remain normal. The summary tells you which process columns and sorting keys are worth examining next.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2. Inspect the process list
Once you know the pressured resource, switch to the corresponding process view or sort order. The Debian manual documents CPU, memory, and disk sorting controls and describes the per-process fields. Sort by CPU when cores are busy, by memory when available RAM is falling, and by disk activity when I/O wait or throughput is the concern.
Read the process name, command line, owner, and elapsed behavior across at least two samples. A short-lived job may appear briefly at the top; a steadily growing value across samples is stronger evidence of a sustained problem. Record the process ID and command line before restarting anything.
3. Include quiet processes when necessary
Because unchanged processes are hidden by default, an apparently empty list does not prove that no relevant service exists. Enable the all-process or equivalent activity control from the manual, then inspect the full list. This is particularly important when a process is blocked, sleeping, or waiting for another service rather than actively consuming CPU.
Focus on each resource
CPU saturation
Use a CPU-focused view or CPU sort key to identify the processes consuming the available processor time. Compare the process percentage with the system summary: high total usage spread over many workers suggests a different response from one process monopolizing a core. Check the command line to distinguish the service itself from a helper, compiler, backup, or maintenance task.

Continue sampling rather than reacting to one screen. A one-off burst may be normal startup behavior; a process that remains at the top over successive 10-second samples deserves investigation. Historical logs are useful when the spike occurred before you connected.
Memory pressure and growth
Watch available memory, swap activity, and per-process memory fields together. A large resident process is not automatically a leak, and a low free-memory figure alone does not establish pressure because Linux uses memory for caches. Look for a process whose memory footprint grows in repeated samples or in replayed historical data, and correlate that growth with swap use and service behavior.
Capture the process ID and command line, then check whether the growth follows a deployment, workload increase, or scheduled task. Restarting a process may hide the symptom without identifying the cause, so preserve the raw log before taking disruptive action.
Disk wait and saturation
Use the system disk section to determine whether devices are busy or the machine is spending time waiting for I/O. Then sort by per-process disk transfer when the required kernel accounting and privileges are present. If those counters are unavailable, use the system-level evidence and inspect which services were active during the interval rather than assuming the busiest visible CPU process caused the storage pressure.

Compare multiple samples and note whether the pressure is sustained, periodic, or tied to a single job.
Network load
Start with interface-level receive and transmit activity in the system summary. This establishes whether the VPS is moving an unusual amount of traffic and which interface is involved. To attribute traffic to individual processes, install and enable the optional netatop module and daemon support. Without it, process-level network columns cannot provide the same attribution, although aggregate interface statistics remain available.
When investigating a game or application service, record the time, interface, and traffic direction before changing firewall, proxy, or application settings. Atop shows load; it does not by itself explain whether traffic is legitimate clients, replication, a backup, or an attack.

Keep evidence with raw logging
An interactive screen only shows what is happening while you are watching. Raw logging preserves the counters needed to investigate an intermittent incident later. Write a raw file with:
atop -w rawfile
Choose a path on a filesystem with enough capacity and a retention plan. The file contains compressed system and process counters rather than a text transcript, so replay it with atop rather than opening it in a text editor.
For a temporary capture, run the logger during the period of interest and stop it normally. For continuous evidence, use the distribution’s background logger or a service configuration. Keep the log location separate from a filesystem that is already close to full; an unbounded accounting file can turn an observability problem into an outage.
Replay a VPS incident after it happens
Open a raw file interactively
Replay a saved capture with:
atop -r rawfile
The display uses the recorded samples, allowing you to move through the incident and examine the system summary and process list as they appeared at each timestamp. This is the practical answer to “which process caused the spike after it happened?”: locate the interval, identify the resource, sort the process list, and follow the process across adjacent samples.
Use the packaged daily log
On systems using the Debian package, the logger stores daily files under /var/log/atop/ with names in the form atop_YYYYMMDD. The manual documents reading the current day’s logfile with atop -r. If your distribution uses another directory or naming scheme, inspect its service and configuration files rather than assuming the Debian path.
Limit replay to a time window
Use the -b and -e options to select beginning and ending times when replaying a log. Narrowing the window makes a long daily file easier to inspect and helps you compare the minutes before, during, and after an outage. The exact time format is defined by the installed manual; use that format consistently.
Extract parsable metrics
For scripts, reports, or a spreadsheet, use the -P option to emit selected metrics in parsable form. Select only the fields needed for the question you are answering, retain the timestamp and process identity, and store the extracted output with the original raw file. Parsable output is useful for documenting a post-incident timeline, but it does not replace the raw counters when you need to revisit a different field later.

Understand Debian’s packaged retention defaults
Debian’s current atop documentation describes a background logger with a default LOGINTERVAL=600 seconds and LOGGENERATIONS=28. In that configuration, samples are written every 600 seconds and 28 generations are retained. The daily files are compressed raw system and process data.
Recommended Free Tools
These are Debian package defaults, not universal atop behavior. Check /etc/default/atop and the service configuration on the VPS you are operating. Other distributions may choose a different interval, retention count, path, compression method, or service name.
A 600-second cadence is suitable for broad historical context but can miss a short spike that begins and ends between samples. If your incidents are brief, supplement the daily logger with a temporary interactive capture or a separately configured raw logger at a shorter interval, while accounting for the additional storage.
Use a repeatable incident workflow
When CPU is high
- Confirm processor pressure in the system summary.
- Switch to CPU-focused sorting and identify the active process.
- Record its process ID, command line, owner, and behavior across successive samples.
- Replay the corresponding raw-log interval if the event is over.
- Only after collecting evidence, decide whether to tune the service, stop a job, or escalate to the application owner.
When memory is falling or swap is active
- Check memory and swap in the system summary.
- Sort by process memory and enable the all-process view if a quiet service may be involved.
- Compare repeated samples for monotonic growth rather than judging one snapshot.
- Use historical replay to determine when growth began and what deployment or job coincided with it.
When storage is slow
- Check device activity and I/O wait at system level.
- Use per-process disk sorting only when root access and kernel storage accounting are available.
- Correlate the busy interval with backups, updates, compaction, or application writes.
- Preserve the raw log before changing workloads or rebooting the VPS.
When network traffic is unexpectedly high
- Identify the busy interface and traffic direction.
- Determine whether per-process attribution is available through
netatop. - Compare the timestamp with application logs, scheduled jobs, and client activity.
- Do not infer malicious traffic from volume alone; use the process and service identity as additional evidence.
When the incident is intermittent
Leave background logging enabled, verify that files are being created, and note the server’s timezone when recording incident times. Afterward, replay the daily raw file with a bounded -b/-e window and use -P for a machine-readable timeline. Intermittent problems are exactly where a live-only monitor is least useful.
What atop does not provide
Atop is centered on a terminal interface and raw logfile replay. Its documentation does not describe a web dashboard, alert-routing system, or fleet-wide management layer. If you operate many VPSs or need notifications when a threshold is crossed, pair atop’s detailed local evidence with a separate monitoring and alerting system.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →That division is useful: atop can show which process consumed resources and preserve the surrounding counters, while another system can aggregate hosts, draw long-term charts, or page an operator. Do not assume that installing atop alone creates alerts or centralized retention.
Operational cautions and maintenance
- Do not use
kill -9to stop atop. The manual warns that forced termination can prevent process accounting from stopping cleanly and allow the accounting file to grow excessively. - Monitor disk space. Raw logs are compressed, but retention and sampling settings still determine how much storage they consume.
- Keep timestamps consistent. Record the VPS timezone and the time window used for replay so incident reports line up with application and provider logs.
- Check package configuration after upgrades. Service names, paths, and defaults are distribution-package decisions and can change independently of the atop command itself.
- Preserve original logs. Exported or parsed data is convenient for reports, but retain the raw file until the incident is closed.
Atop versus a broader monitoring stack
| Capability | Atop | What a complementary system may add |
|---|---|---|
| Live terminal visibility | Full-screen interactive view with resource-focused process lists | Browser dashboards or mobile views |
| Per-process attribution | CPU, memory, and available disk fields; network attribution with netatop support | Additional application, container, or service-level context |
| Historical investigation | Compressed raw files replayed with atop -r |
Long-term centralized storage and cross-host queries |
| Export | Parsable selected metrics with -P |
Time-series APIs and automated reports |
| Alerting | Not documented as a built-in alert-routing layer | Threshold alerts, escalation, and paging |
| Fleet management | Designed around a host’s terminal and logfiles | Inventory, policy, and multi-VPS administration |
Choose atop when process-level terminal visibility and post-incident replay are the priority. Add other tooling when you need centralized dashboards, alert delivery, or fleet-wide management.
A practical checklist for a monitored VPS
- Install the maintained distribution package or build with the documented systemd or SysV target.
- Confirm the required zlib, ncurses, and glib components when building.
- Run an interactive session and remember the 10-second default.
- Learn the system summary before sorting the process list.
- Enable the all-process view when unchanged processes could matter.
- Use root and kernel storage accounting for per-process disk detail when required.
- Install and configure netatop when process-level network attribution is necessary.
- Verify that raw files are being written and that retention matches your incident pattern.
- Replay with
atop -r, narrow with-b/-e, and extract with-P. - Stop atop normally and watch the filesystem that stores accounting data.
With those pieces in place, atop becomes more than a live “top” replacement: it is a compact evidence trail for explaining why a Linux VPS slowed down, which process was involved, and whether the same pattern has occurred before.
