You can monitor the Raspberry Pi side of a YouTube livestream over SSH, then check YouTube’s own stream health and warnings in Live Control Room. These are separate checks: a running encoder on the Pi does not prove YouTube is receiving a healthy stream or that viewers can watch it.
What SSH can—and cannot—tell you
SSH (Secure Shell) gives you a remote terminal session on the Pi. From there, you can inspect the encoder or streaming service that your setup actually uses and review its output or logs. Raspberry Pi OS has SSH disabled by default, so enable it during setup or in configuration before connecting. See Raspberry Pi’s remote-access documentation.
SSH reports the Pi-side state. YouTube Live Control Room reports what YouTube sees arriving at its ingest service, including stream health and messages. You need both views to diagnose the full path from encoder to platform.
Enable SSH and connect to the Pi
- Enable the SSH server. If SSH was not enabled during Raspberry Pi OS setup, enable it through the operating system’s configuration method. The exact steps can vary by OS version and setup.
- Find the Pi’s current network route. For a connection from the same home or local network, identify the Pi’s local IP address. The address can change, so confirm it if a previously working connection stops reaching the device.
- Connect using your own account and address. From a terminal on another computer, use
ssh YOUR_USERNAME@PI_IP_ADDRESS, replacing both example values with your actual username and the Pi’s current address. Accept the host-key prompt only if you recognize that you are connecting to your Pi, then enter the account password if requested.
For access while away from the local network, use a VPN, Raspberry Pi Connect where appropriate, or another secured remote-access arrangement. Avoid exposing SSH directly to the public internet without a carefully secured setup; a local IP address alone is not a route from outside your network.

Check the streaming process on the Pi
Once connected, inspect the process or service used by your particular installation, then review its terminal output or logs for errors. There is no single process name or monitoring command that applies to every Pi livestream: the correct check depends on the encoder, how it was launched, and whether it is managed by a service manager. A shell check that assumes a particular command or service can miss a stream started another way.
- Confirm that the intended encoder or streaming service is still running.
- Look for recent output indicating encoding or connection errors, restarts, or loss of the ingest connection.
- If the stream runs as a managed service, inspect that service’s status and logs using the manager and service name configured on your Pi.
- If it was started interactively, check the terminal session or log destination used by that launch method.
Treat these as checks of the local process only. A process can remain active while YouTube is receiving no usable video, receiving unstable video, or reporting a platform-side issue.

Check YouTube’s stream health separately
Open YouTube Live Control Room for the event and inspect its stream health indicator and messages during the broadcast. YouTube’s guidance says, “During the event, monitor the stream health and review messages.” A healthy-looking Pi process is not a substitute for this platform-side check.
If YouTube reports a problem, compare the encoder’s resolution, frame rate, and bitrate with the upload capacity available to the Pi. YouTube recommends running an upload speed test and testing with representative audio and video movement before going live. A static image or quiet test may not reveal issues that appear with motion or sound.

Example H.264 bitrate recommendations
The following are examples from YouTube’s H.264 recommended-bitrate table, accessed in 2026. They are encoder-setting recommendations—not a measurement of your Pi’s bandwidth or a guarantee that your connection can sustain the stream. YouTube’s table varies by resolution, frame rate, and codec.

Use YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guidance for the current recommendations that match your codec and output settings. Choose settings your actual upload connection can sustain rather than treating a table value as a universal requirement.

Verify the ingest URL and protect the stream key
YouTube recommends RTMPS, which transports RTMP over TLS/SSL. Get the RTMPS URL and stream key from Live Control Room, and make sure the encoder supports RTMPS. Do not assume an ordinary RTMP URL is interchangeable with the RTMPS URL shown for your event. If an SSL connection error persists, YouTube lists port 443 as a troubleshooting option; follow the URL and encoder requirements for your particular setup. - Check that the configured ingest URL and key match the event in Live Control Room.
- Keep the stream key secret. Do not put a real key in a public example, screenshot, shared log, or shell history.
- If you suspect the key has been exposed, replace or reset it through YouTube’s stream settings, then update the encoder configuration.
If you use a Raspberry Pi camera
For camera-based setups that use Raspberry Pi’s rpicam-vid, the official camera documentation describes network-streaming options. That tool is not universal: other installations may use another encoder, input source, or service manager, so do not apply its command-line options to a different setup without checking that tool’s documentation.

Raspberry Pi 5 uses software video encoders. Its --low-latency option trades some coding efficiency and potentially maximum frame rate for lower encoding latency. Consider that trade-off against the resolution and frame rate you need, and verify the resulting stream in Live Control Room. See Raspberry Pi’s camera software documentation.
Troubleshoot common remote-monitoring problems
