How to Monitor an Amazon EC2 YouTube Stream with CloudWatch

CloudWatch can show whether your EC2 sender looks healthy, but YouTube Live Control Room is needed to check ingestion health. Here’s how to monitor both.

Use CloudWatch to monitor the EC2 instance and any guest metrics or logs you configure; use YouTube Live Control Room to confirm whether YouTube is receiving a healthy stream. CloudWatch host metrics alone cannot prove successful YouTube ingestion. A dependable workflow checks both dashboards before and during the broadcast.

What CloudWatch can—and cannot—tell you

Amazon EC2 publishes instance metrics to CloudWatch by default. These can help identify host-side problems such as CPU pressure, unusual network activity, or failed instance status checks. If you install and configure the CloudWatch agent, you can also collect selected guest operating-system metrics and logs.

YouTube Live Control Room is the separate, YouTube-side view: it shows stream health and status messages for the stream being sent to YouTube. A healthy EC2 metric does not confirm that YouTube is ingesting usable video, and a YouTube health warning does not by itself identify an EC2 cause. Use both views to locate the layer reporting trouble. AWS’s EC2 monitoring guide and YouTube’s live-stream metrics guidance describe their respective monitoring roles.

Choose the right monitoring detail

Option What it monitors Collection or alert behavior Cost consideration
EC2 basic monitoring Default instance metrics, including CPU utilization, network traffic, and status checks Most metrics use five-minute periods; status-check metrics are available in one-minute periods AWS marks basic monitoring as no charge in its detailed-monitoring comparison
EC2 detailed monitoring EC2 instance metrics One-minute metric periods; enable it at launch or for an existing instance Per-metric charges apply
CloudWatch agent Selected guest system metrics and logs collected from inside the instance Depends on the metrics and logs selected and the agent’s configuration and delivery Additional selected metrics are billed as custom metrics; check current AWS pricing
CloudWatch alarms A chosen CloudWatch metric and threshold Evaluate over selected periods and trigger configured actions, such as SNS notifications or an Auto Scaling policy Check current CloudWatch pricing for the alarms and related services you use
YouTube Live Control Room YouTube ingestion stream health and status messages Inspect the stream during setup and while it is live Not a CloudWatch metric; consult YouTube for service terms

AWS’s documented intervals are monitoring periods, not guarantees about how quickly every underlying issue will be detected or resolved. Detailed monitoring and agent-collected metrics have additional charges; see AWS’s detailed-monitoring guide and CloudWatch agent overview before enabling them.

How to monitor an EC2 YouTube stream

  1. Review the instance’s CloudWatch metrics. In the AWS console, open EC2, select the instance sending the stream, and open its monitoring metrics. Review CPU utilization, network traffic, status checks, and other published metrics relevant to the sender. AWS documents CPUUtilization and NetworkIn as examples of default EC2 metrics.
  2. Decide whether five-minute periods are sufficient. Basic monitoring uses five-minute periods for most metrics, while status-check metrics are available in one-minute periods. If operations require one-minute periods for the instance metrics, enable detailed monitoring and account for its per-metric charge. See Manage detailed monitoring for your EC2 instances.
  3. Add guest metrics or logs only when needed. Install and configure the CloudWatch agent if you need visibility into guest memory, disk, processes, or relevant logs. Select the telemetry deliberately, grant the instance only the permissions needed for that setup, and verify the agent is configured and publishing. These are not part of the default EC2 metric set. AWS explains agent collection in its agent overview and EC2 console setup guide.
  4. Create alarms for actionable, sustained conditions. Choose a metric, threshold, evaluation periods, and an action such as an SNS notification. Set thresholds using a representative test with your encoder, instance family, resolution, frame rate, and target latency; there is no universal CPU, memory, bitrate, or network threshold for every stream. Use sustained conditions to avoid reacting to transient noise. An alarm signals a metric condition—it does not certify video delivery. See AWS’s EC2 monitoring documentation.
  5. Test the actual broadcast settings in YouTube Live Control Room. Check the preview, stream health, and status messages. Confirm the intended resolution, frame rate, audio, and moving video are visible, and verify the stream is accessible as intended. YouTube recommends testing before the event and continuously monitoring audio and video quality; see its live streaming tips.
  6. During the event, correlate the two views. Use CloudWatch for host metrics and configured guest telemetry, then use Live Control Room for YouTube’s ingestion status. If one reports healthy while the other reports a problem, investigate the layer showing the fault rather than treating either dashboard as end-to-end proof.

Check the encoder settings YouTube receives

Monitoring cannot compensate for an incompatible encoder output. YouTube’s encoder guidance specifies H.264 video and AAC audio for proper ingestion and provides bitrate recommendations by codec, resolution, and frame rate. For H.264, its current guidance lists 5 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps, 8 Mbps for 720p at 60 fps, 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps, and 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. These are YouTube recommendations, not a promise of stream quality; consult the current table for the exact format you send: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

During a test, compare the configured output with the stream preview and health messages. YouTube’s guidance says, “During the event, monitor the stream health and review messages.”

Troubleshoot common monitoring and stream problems

  • Memory or disk metrics are missing: Default EC2 metrics do not include these guest measurements. Confirm the CloudWatch agent is installed, configured to collect the selected metrics, authorized to publish them, and successfully delivering data.
  • CPU or network activity looks high: These readings can suggest host-side pressure, but neither one alone proves whether YouTube is receiving the stream. Correlate them with configured agent metrics or logs and YouTube’s health and status messages.
  • A CloudWatch alarm fires but the stream appears healthy: The alarm reports that its configured metric crossed a threshold over its evaluation periods. Check the metric, threshold, and time window against the test workload; do not interpret the alarm as a direct stream-health result.
  • YouTube reports stream-format trouble: Review the encoder output against YouTube’s requirements. Its live streaming error messages identify formats other than H.264 video and AAC audio as an incorrect stream format.
  • The stream is not visible or accessible as expected: Check the Live Control Room preview and accessibility, and verify video and audio during a representative test. YouTube’s live streaming tips recommend pre-event testing and ongoing audio/video checks.
