Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallCrashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteUse two checks, not one: run FFmpeg under a process supervisor so it can be restarted when it exits, and verify stream health in YouTube Live Control Room. A running FFmpeg process does not prove YouTube is receiving usable video and audio. After a restart, look for the preview and check the Health Indicator before treating the stream as recovered.
What each monitoring layer can—and cannot—detect
| Layer | Useful signal | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg | Logs and process exit status can reveal errors or a terminated encoder. | A process that remains alive may still be sending unhealthy or unusable media. |
| Host service manager | Can start FFmpeg again after it exits; a watchdog can check for expected liveness pings. | A watchdog ping is not proof that YouTube is ingesting a healthy stream. systemd documents watchdog signaling, not end-to-end YouTube stream verification. systemd service documentation |
| YouTube Live Control Room | The preview, Health Indicator, and accompanying messages show whether YouTube detects ingest problems. | It does not restart your local FFmpeg process for you. YouTube Help: Live Control Room |
Choose a signal and recovery action for the failure you are trying to handle. An input disconnect, FFmpeg exit, output transport failure, and YouTube format error are different problems; a single restart policy does not fix all of them.
Start with a verified, healthy stream
- Get the ingest details from YouTube Live Control Room. Copy the stream server URL and stream key into the FFmpeg output configuration. Treat the key as a credential; do not publish it in commands, logs, screenshots, or support messages.
- Start FFmpeg and inspect its output. Keep stderr available so you can see connection and encoding errors. Retain logs with timestamps so you can correlate a local failure with YouTube’s messages.
- Wait for YouTube’s preview. YouTube’s setup workflow is to start the encoder, wait for the preview in Live Control Room, and then select Go live. YouTube Help: encoder setup
- Confirm health on the YouTube side. Check the Health Indicator and read its message rather than relying only on FFmpeg’s process state. YouTube says the dashboard checks the stream sent to YouTube and timestamps errors; red messages are critical and may inhibit the event or cause viewer problems, while yellow messages are moderate and may degrade quality. Restart FFmpeg when its process exits
For a simple deployment, use the host’s service manager to launch FFmpeg, restart it after an unexpected exit, and keep the logs. Configure a restart delay and a retry limit or alert threshold that fit your setup. These controls are operational safeguards, not universal values prescribed by FFmpeg or YouTube. A delay and limit help prevent a persistent configuration error from turning into a rapid restart loop.
Record restart times alongside FFmpeg’s stderr or journal output. If the process repeatedly exits, inspect the error before letting it cycle indefinitely: restarting an unchanged command will not repair a bad key, unsupported format, or persistent network or configuration problem.

Do not treat a service-manager watchdog as a YouTube health check. A watchdog can establish that the service is sending the expected liveness signals; it does not, by itself, establish that YouTube has accepted and can play the stream. systemd service documentation
Match FFmpeg recovery options to the failure
HTTP input interruptions
FFmpeg’s HTTP protocol implementation documents reconnect options such as reconnect, reconnect_at_eof, reconnect_on_network_error, reconnect_on_http_error, reconnect_streamed, reconnect_delay_max, and retry limits. These options apply to documented HTTP protocol behavior on supported inputs. They do not automatically reconnect a YouTube RTMP or RTMPS output, and they are not a universal recovery mechanism. Check the syntax and availability against the protocol, command structure, and FFmpeg build you actually run. FFmpeg protocol documentation

Output recovery with the FIFO muxer
The FIFO muxer documents attempt_recovery for output failures. Its drop_pkts_on_overflow option involves a trade-off: dropping packets can allow processing to continue while omitting part of the stream; the default behavior blocks until the muxer processes packets. Test the behavior with your particular output and installed FFmpeg version before depending on it. FIFO output recovery is not a substitute for a supervisor if FFmpeg itself terminates. FFmpeg FIFO muxer documentation
FFmpeg process termination
If FFmpeg exits, an external service manager can start a new process. Make the restart policy bounded and preserve failure details. If FFmpeg stays alive but YouTube reports an ingest error, diagnose the stream rather than assuming a process restart alone will fix it.

Verify recovery and diagnose YouTube ingest errors
After FFmpeg restarts, return to Live Control Room. Look for a new preview and check the Health Indicator and its timestamps. A local “process running” status is not an end-to-end confirmation that YouTube is receiving healthy media.
Use YouTube’s error text to guide the next step. YouTube identifies incorrect stream format as an ingest error, including video other than H.264 or audio other than AAC. For some third-party encoder startup errors, its troubleshooting guidance includes refreshing the stream key in Live Control Room and updating the encoder. Fix the indicated cause before retrying repeatedly. YouTube Help: stream health · YouTube Help: encoder troubleshooting

Use RTMPS if your encoder supports it
YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP over TLS/SSL. Get the RTMPS server URL from Live Control Room and confirm that your FFmpeg build and output configuration support the transport before switching. Do not assume that changing transport resolves an invalid key, codec, or other ingest problem. YouTube Help: RTMPS

Troubleshoot by symptom
| Symptom | What to check | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg exits and does not return | FFmpeg stderr and the service manager’s status or journal. | Correct the reported cause, then configure a supervised restart with a delay and bounded retry or alert policy. |
| FFmpeg is running but YouTube has no preview or reports poor health | Live Control Room preview, Health Indicator, and its timestamped message. | Diagnose the ingest-side error; do not count the local process as proof of recovery. |
| YouTube reports a format error | Whether the outgoing video is H.264 and audio is AAC. | Correct the stream format and confirm the preview and health status again. |
| A third-party encoder reports a startup error | The exact YouTube error and the encoder’s stream-key settings. | Follow the applicable YouTube troubleshooting step; for some startup errors, YouTube advises refreshing the stream key and updating the encoder. |
| HTTP input drops or reaches EOF | Whether the affected connection is an HTTP input and which reconnect options your installed build supports. | Use the relevant HTTP reconnect behavior only for that failure scope; it does not guarantee recovery of a YouTube output. |
| Output fails while FFmpeg continues | Whether the chosen output and muxer support the recovery behavior you configured. | Test FIFO recovery and any packet-dropping trade-off with your actual output and build; keep process supervision for exits. |
| Restarts repeat without restoring the stream | Whether the cause is persistent, such as an invalid key, unsupported format, or a configuration error. | Stop relying on repeated restarts; fix the cause, inspect logs, and use a retry limit or alert threshold. |
