Check stream health in YouTube Live Control Room
- Start your stream in OBS and leave it running. OBS sends the encoded feed to YouTube; monitoring it in YouTube Studio is separate from OBS’s start and stop controls.
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room in another browser or on another device, and select the active stream. Check the stream status and any error messages, along with the real-time analytics shown there. YouTube’s encoder streaming workflow has you wait for the preview in Live Control Room before clicking Go live.
- Keep OBS and the stream running while you monitor. Routine checks in the dashboard do not require pressing OBS’s stop control or YouTube’s End Stream button.
Verify the viewer-facing stream separately
When you need to know whether playback itself looks and sounds right, open the stream’s public YouTube watch page on a separate device. Check that the event is accessible and that audio and video play on that device. YouTube recommends checking access from channel and watch pages, including on mobile, and continuously monitoring audio and video quality (YouTube streaming tips).
The watch page answers a different question from Live Control Room: it lets you inspect playback on one viewer device and network, not every viewer’s experience. YouTube’s stream-health indicator is not a substitute for that playback check.
Know what the dashboard metrics mean
For encoder streams, Live Control Room can show stream status and errors, concurrent viewers, duration, likes, chat rate, views, average view duration, reactions and reminders set. Which metrics appear can vary by stream type. YouTube also cautions that Live Control Room and YouTube Analytics report different things: Analytics is based on the video ID and is processed to remove spam, so its figures are not interchangeable with real-time Live Control Room data (YouTube Help).

Do not read an audience metric as proof that playback is currently working perfectly for every viewer. Use the dashboard for incoming-stream status and a separate watch-page check for playback on a particular device.
Choose the right remote-monitoring method

Use OBS WebSocket only when you need OBS control
OBS WebSocket can let a compatible external tool control scenes and sources; it does not provide a remote view of the video output by itself. OBS says WebSocket has been included by default since OBS Studio 28. If you enable it, require authentication and keep the password private. OBS’s Remote Control Guide, published April 18, 2023, recommends protecting WebSocket with a password against unauthorized control.

If you need to see or operate the whole streaming computer, remote desktop software is a separate option. It is not required to check YouTube’s dashboard, and the correct setup and security precautions depend on the remote-access product and network.
Account for latency when checking playback
Latency is the delay between the encoder or camera capturing an event and its appearance in the stream. YouTube notes that choosing lower latency may increase playback buffering (YouTube latency settings). A watch-page viewer can therefore see the stream behind the encoder. That delay alone does not mean OBS has stopped or playback is broken.

Troubleshoot without ending the stream
- Live Control Room shows an error or unhealthy status: Read the displayed status and error message first. This points to an incoming-stream or stream-health issue; avoid ending the stream just to perform a routine check.
- The dashboard looks healthy, but the watch page is silent or has video trouble: Check playback on the separate device and its network. A healthy incoming feed does not establish that every device is playing it correctly.
- The remote watch page is behind OBS: Allow for stream latency before treating the delay as a failure. YouTube notes that lower latency can bring more buffering.
- Analytics figures differ from Live Control Room: The surfaces measure and process data differently. Use Live Control Room for real-time stream monitoring rather than treating later Analytics figures as an identical live readout.
- A remote tool cannot show OBS’s video: OBS WebSocket is for control of scenes and sources, not a playback monitor. Use the YouTube watch page to inspect viewer-facing playback; use remote desktop only if you need the computer’s interface.
- You enabled WebSocket: Confirm password protection is on and do not share its password, as OBS advises in its Remote Control Guide.
Test your monitoring setup before an important stream
YouTube recommends testing a live stream, previewing it before going live and continuously checking audio and video quality (YouTube streaming tips). Before an event, confirm you can access Live Control Room from your monitoring device and open the watch page on the separate device you plan to use for playback checks.
