Estimate monthly VPS egress by multiplying the stream’s total outgoing bitrate—including audio—by the hours it runs, then by 0.45. For a continuous 30-day stream, each 1 Mbps uses about 324 decimal GB. This is an estimate of data sent from the VPS to YouTube, not a VPS price quote; compare it with the exact plan’s outbound-transfer rules and allow for overhead and other traffic.
Use the outgoing bitrate and actual streaming time
A bitrate is measured in bits per second. Divide the total outgoing bitrate by eight to convert bits to bytes, then multiply by the stream’s duration in seconds:
transfer_bytes = outgoing_bits_per_second × streaming_seconds ÷ 8
For a convenient decimal-gigabyte estimate, with bitrate in megabits per second and duration in hours:

transfer_GB ≈ bitrate_Mbps × hours × 0.45
This uses decimal units: 1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes. Use the stream’s actual hours or seconds for the billing period, rather than assuming every month has the same length.
Quick estimate for a continuous stream
- 30 days: bitrate in Mbps × 324 = approximate decimal GB.
- 31 days: bitrate in Mbps × 334.8 = approximate decimal GB.
For example, a steady 10 Mbps feed running for 30 days is about 3,240 GB, or 3.24 decimal TB, before overhead and other VPS traffic. If your provider measures in TiB or another unit, convert the estimate before comparing it with the allowance.

Choose the right bitrate for the calculation
Use the bitrate FFmpeg is actually configured to send, not resolution by itself. Resolution and frame rate influence the bitrate you may choose, but they do not determine the egress total without it. Add video and audio bitrates to get the combined outgoing rate.
YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance recommends H.264 video at 10 Mbps for 1080p30 and 12 Mbps for 1080p60. Its advanced settings list 128 Kbps for stereo audio. If you use those example audio rates alongside the video recommendations, the combined totals are 10.128 Mbps and 12.128 Mbps, respectively.

These figures are arithmetic estimates, not measured VPS usage. YouTube’s guidance also covers H.265/HEVC and AV1, and recommends a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. Check the current recommendations for your codec and settings; estimate egress from the bitrate you actually send. YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple formats for viewers, but that viewer-side processing does not mean your VPS sends every playback rendition. The VPS sends its configured feed to YouTube.
Worked example: 6 Mbps video with 128 Kbps audio
Suppose FFmpeg sends 6 Mbps of video and 128 Kbps of audio continuously for 30 days. Add them first: 6 + 0.128 = 6.128 Mbps. Then calculate:

That is about 1.99 decimal TB before network overhead, retries, reconnects, or unrelated VPS traffic. Compare this estimate plus an operating margin with the plan’s outbound allowance for the same billing period.

The stream upload from your VPS to YouTube is outbound traffic from the VPS. There is no universal VPS transfer allowance implied by YouTube’s encoder recommendations: limits and billing vary by provider, plan, and sometimes region. Check the exact plan terms before relying on a monthly estimate.

- Included outbound transfer: Confirm the allowance and whether it resets on a monthly or other billing cycle.
- Counting direction: Verify what the provider counts as outbound traffic and whether other VPS traffic shares the same allowance.
- Overages and enforcement: Check the overage price and whether exceeding the limit causes throttling, suspension, or another restriction.
- Network capacity: Check port speed and any sustained-throughput limits. A port-speed figure is not the same as a transfer allowance.
The bitrate calculation estimates volume over time. A reliable stream also needs sustained outbound capacity and a working route to YouTube. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health; its Live Streaming API documentation describes health feedback, including bitrate and keyframe-related conditions.
Account for overhead, retries, and extra streams
The formula estimates media transfer at a steady average bitrate. Actual billed transfer may be higher because of protocol overhead, retries, reconnects, or unrelated VPS traffic. Leave headroom above the estimate; for a tighter operational figure, compare it with the provider’s transfer counter during a representative run.
If you send simultaneous streams, calculate each outgoing feed and add them together. A backup ingestion address does not by itself double transfer; sending a duplicate stream to another destination does. YouTube recommends RTMPS as a secure extension to RTMP, and its live delivery guidance discusses ingestion arrangements.
